I'm more than willing to be shouted down about the cost of hiring a trade and how you get what you pay for, but please hear me out and let me know if you think the cost is excessive, or if I'm just massively out of touch re what things actually cost (it's been a long time since I had anything done at all really).

Fairly large bathroom suite, consisting of shower cubicle, bath, toilet, sink and towel radiator. I have been quoted to rip out and replace all existing bathroom, make good the walls & decorate, retile the walls and floor, remove rubbish (ie skip) and replace the lighting with spotlights.

I am to supply all the tiles and bathroom suite myself, so this quote is for the cost of fitting/tiling/electrics/removal/skip.
The original cost was £8950, now discounted when I was horrified to £6850. So all in the bathroom is looking like it's going to cost in the region £10k. AIBU?

I have trades starting tomorrow. 2 week job.
Rip out, skip, fully tile floor and ceiling, fit toilet, sink, bath, double shower cubicle, electrics, heated towel rail replace ceiling, LEDs, fan.
6.5k for the labour and skip. Bought all the items myself (partially using his discounts, partially eBay etc)

Robs20 · 25/10/2020 21:44

To make you feel a bit better, we were recently quoted 16.5k for a tiny family bathroom. Total joke!

Busymum45 · 25/10/2020 22:00

Labour only my husband is a bathroom fitter, most 2-2.5k labour

rumandbiscuits · 25/10/2020 22:26
@rumandbiscuits £750 to fit a bathroom however small would make me think he's missed a zero off.
I hope not!!! My sister had her bathroom done last year and they charged £750 per week for work and it took them a fortnight her bathroom is a lot bigger than mine plus she was moving where the bath was and having a shower cubicle fitted. Reading all these posts though I am now starting to worry! We live up north, I wonder if that makes a difference?

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 25/10/2020 22:33

Some of those prices seem ridiculous to me. Even an expensive plumber at £200 a day is unlikely to take more than 2-3 weeks. So £3k labour maximum, and more likely £2.5k, plus cost of the materials (which varies).

Legoandloldolls · 25/10/2020 22:40

I have done two family bathrooms each about 4k. One is 100% tiled except for the ceiling. We got all the materials for both. All tiles and fittings from b&q, wickes etc. We did spend some times going around and choosing all the bits but we wanted to have them a certain way after decades of renting

Ours took 5 weeks thanks to a total change of layout and days of working on walls which hadn't had a proper makeover in the last 70 years.

I think a lot depends on what you do. Last time in a different house we just replaced units and had the room re-tiled. 2 weeks and a lot less money. No new pipes, no electrics, no drilling into walls on various points.

But as the bathroom we bought when we got the house was in such a bad layout there was no way around it.

mysticpistachio · 25/10/2020 22:48

Assuming you are not moving toilet, bath etc then that is hugely excessive. Tiler can't be there same day as plumber but even taking an expensive day rate of 400 that is 17 days.

Fitting a shower tray properly takes time but the toilet bath and sink are quick jobs. It's beyond me how a refit can take 2 full weeks if tiler and electrician are lined up by plumber.

We've just redone our bathroom with separate walk in shower. All high end duravit, Hansgrohe and matki (and not entry level) with porcelenosa tiles and underfloor heating. We paid about £2.5 for fitting and tiling so around £6 altogether. I thought that was an awful lot.

DorisDaisyMay · 25/10/2020 22:50

It depends on so much.
What I will say it will end up costing you more and taking you longer than you think.

kelly14 · 25/10/2020 22:55

We paid 13k for average sized bathroom ( bath, toilet ) and Downstairs cloakroom. All
Tiles are porcelain though, floor and all the walls. That was less than 3 years ago.

My parents just got quoted 16 k for a small downstairs bathroom With shower, it's already very modern but they want to change it.

SantaMonicaPier · 25/10/2020 22:59

That sounds a lot but we're outside London. Three years ago we had ours done, used a local builder and ordered the suite ourselves. Lino floor, tiled up to ceiling around the bath. Total was around £3,000 including all items (inc those we ordered) and labour.

Twigaletta · 25/10/2020 23:02

We only paid for fitting and bought the rest ourself as in your OP. Cost us £3850. 3 out of 4 walls completely tiled (3m x 2.5m bathroom)

BuffayTheVampireLayer · 25/10/2020 23:22

Seems very excessive to me. I had a shower room done, very nicely, a wall moved, study rearranged, plastering with radiator installed, and cupboard built, hallway decorated including wooden panelling with new radiator, doors put in all downstairs including the frames built, and new doors upstairs plus other little bits for just over 8k. I didn't have tiles but had those shower panels which aren't cheap. Fitted bathroom furniture and not the cheap stuff, fairly expensive bathroom cupboard with LED light and shaving point. All included in that price. I know my builder has a tendancy to undercharge but yours seems very expensive to me.

Love51 · 25/10/2020 23:29

Shit! I was budgeting £3k and wanted new flooring, and tilting as well as a new bathroom suite. I live in a fairly cheap area, it seems I thought I was living in the 90s.

Rollmopsrule · 25/10/2020 23:35

To me that is expensive. We had an average sized bathroom, full suite and 3 walls tiled and flooring fitted. It was 2k for labour and old suite to be removed. The plumber was great and quality of work fantastic. We are north of England.

Jokie · 26/10/2020 01:54

My parents just redid theirs and it was £8k. Mid standard fittings, new tiles etc.

Els1e · 26/10/2020 06:22

My dp is getting a new bathroom at the moment and total cost is under £4K. There is no moving of pipe work and he is having the waterproof boards around the shower rather than tiles.

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 26/10/2020 07:27

I thank God my DH, who is not a plumber by trade, is perfectly capable of plumbing in a bathroom (and I am perfectly capable of tiling it)). There really isn't a lot to it. We have obviously saved ourselves thousands.

I'd live to be able to. I know exactly what to do (have done it before), but sodding Rheumatoid Arthritis has put a stop to that.

Costing us a bloody fortune now!! Grrrrrr!

PhilCornwall1 · 26/10/2020 07:31

I'd live to be able to.

Love to be able to. Bloody fingers!

Florencex · 26/10/2020 07:32

I would budget about £10k for a family bathroom yes.

I recently got a quote for the enquire and the labour was just under £2k excluding tiling.

Dowermouse · 26/10/2020 07:37

That doesn't sound massively outrageous, but I wouldn't use a company that was able to knock a large percentage off their price just like that. Simply not inspiring of trust.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 26/10/2020 07:39

Just been quoted for ours 8m2 floor tiles, 18m2 wall tiles (half height) shower over the bath, toilet, sink and unit, towel rail and under floor heating/waterproof membrane, rip out current suite shower cubicle and tiles, plaster, shower pump , traditional look fittings including brushed brass taps, shower etc, mastic man, skip etc just shy of 10k , I could've chosen a cheaper suite and tiles to make it cheaper. That's someone we know (not mates' rates) so he's not ripping us off. It's also about the end to end perfect management he's getting in the plasterer, tiler, electrician to do the under floor heating, shaving points, move the light, all good plumbers use a mastic man. It's around 3 weeks work and around 3.5k is his labour, seems reasonable to me

moomin11 · 26/10/2020 07:47

We're getting our two bathrooms done soon, about £14k for the two. One is a small en-suite and the other is a good sized bathroom but can only have a bath not a shower cubicle too due to sloping ceilings. So £10k for a large bathroom with separate shower cubicle seems reasonable to me. One place we went to said our ensuite with them would be about £15k-£20k which seemed crazy.

Mindymomo · 26/10/2020 07:48

My husband is a bathroom installer. There are lots of things to consider when having this done. How easy tiles come off, state of walls, replacing plastic pipework, changing layout of bathroom e.g. wanting bath other way round, w.c. moved and lastly the size and type of tiles used on floor and walls. I would say on average he charges £3,500/£4,000 for labour for standard size bathroom, plus shower, including electrics, plastering walls, tiling, fitting new suite and disposing of all suite and debris.
