To ask the most impulsive thing you’ve ever done

Wellsbells · 25/10/2020 15:28

And whether you regretted it?

Mine was when I was backpacking in South Africa in my twenties. It was so hot and humid that one day I suddenly decided to cut off my waist length hair to about an inch long all over with my nail scissors in my hostel room. It felt amazing and I had no regrets until a few months later when it was at the awkward in-between length.

Another was the time, following a breakup, I quit my job and moved to the other end of the country. Initially regretted it as the isolation from all my friends was hard but now I’m really happy here and glad I did it.

Would love to hear yours!

Bought a house. Wasn’t even looking! But idly looked randomly on a Friday afternoon, saw it Sat, offered that day. No regrets.

Lots and lots of impulsive travelling decisions in my 20s. Hitchhiked eastern Oz, random motorcycle rides in South America,
impulsive day trips in Europe!

Wish I could do it all again!

fortunatelynot · 25/10/2020 18:07

Impulsive travel on my own to Africa, Europe and Canada.
Ditched my run of a mill admin job to follow my dream of doing an English degree. Then did teacher training and am now a headteacher 12 years later.
Left my steady, reliable husband with my son and enough stuff to fill a carrier bag after 15 years together. It hit me that I no longer loved him. I couldn’t pretend.

fortunatelynot · 25/10/2020 18:09

I meant that my son came with me! Although after things settled he did spend regular time with his dad.

When you know, you know.

MadameBlobby · 25/10/2020 18:09

Bought a new (to me) car on a whim a couple of weeks ago. Husband was not impressed but he got over himself.

bigoldknobblyknees · 25/10/2020 18:12

I had broken up with my ex a few months before which, although the right decision, meant I was living at my parents while the house was on the market. I was about to book a holiday to get away for a few days as the whole thing had been exhausting.

A guy, who I knew through my best friend, was interrailing on his own and after I commented on one of his Facebook pictures we ended up messaging for several hours. When he asked about my holiday plans, I mentioned I would probably be booking a city break on my own, and he basically said as he was on his own, it would be fun to meet if we were in a particular city at the same time. Fuelled by wine, I booked my flight and hotel to go out to his next stop just a few days later, but I didn't really think anything of it other than a break where I might meet an acquaintance for a drink one night. We met up on the first night and didn't spend any time apart from that point onwards. The city itself was a bit underwhelming in comparison to my expectations but we had such a good time of sightseeing, plenty of good food and wine, and a lot of sex Blush

On return I just thought it might have been one of those random impulsive things you do but doesn't go anywhere. However several years later we are still together and very happy.

itsstillgood · 25/10/2020 18:19

Quit uni, dh and I relocated from London to South Coast in space of week including finding house and job, bought a house without seeing it (different occasion). Regret none. I dither over small decisions but I tend to just go for it with bigger ones. I am a firm believer in trusting gut and not looking back.

PointyMcguire · 25/10/2020 18:32

Bought a foal unseen from Germany (although I did briefly mention it to DH first but he thought I was talking about buying in the future). Totally no regrets.

RiftGibbon · 25/10/2020 18:45

Watched Crocodile Dundee at the cinema with a friend. Halfway through, we turned to reach other and days, "Let's go there!"
Handed in my notice the next day, and spent six happy months travelling.

JulesM73 · 25/10/2020 18:52

Made an on the spot decision to do a masters when my boss at work said ‘we were going to ask you but didn’t think it would be your thing’....
never went to Uni, was in my 40’s and had a young son and worked full time in a stressful job. 2 years later completed it. Don’t regret it one bit.

I’ve got visions of a horse with a sheet thrown over it in your living room 😂[/quote]
To be fair, knowing my husband there is actually a chance I'd get away with this🤣

tattooedmummy1 · 25/10/2020 19:17

I handed in my resignation. My notice period ends next week and I still don't currently have a new job (I also haven't worked the last nearly three weeks because I contracted covid shortly after handing in my notice. Lol) But I don't regret it. The workplace and the people I worked with were making me so miserable.
Money will be tight for a couple months but my happiness is more important than money.

Also. I cut my own hair with a pair of scissors I found in my husbands tool bag. I don't regret that either, I just have a weird fringe now Grin

Imworthit · 25/10/2020 19:19

Moved to Sweden on a whim. Best decision ever!

Imworthit · 25/10/2020 19:22

On and quit my job because my coworker was a prick. He dropped me in it so I just quit then and there. The boss was all geared up to scream at me. Felt so empowering 😁

Alloftheboys · 25/10/2020 19:23

@ZombieOtter ‘s OH “Darling. Why is the side table neighing?”

HowFastIsTooFast · 25/10/2020 19:25

A friend asked if I wanted to go do a summer season in a holiday destination with her when we were 20. I quit my job the next day. 10 days later we flew out. 16 years later I'm still here.

Imworthit · 25/10/2020 19:25

Moved to Canada, good idea. Moved to the outer hebredies and got a small croft farm with chickens, bad idea. Decided to go to Glasgow in the middle of the night. I'm pretty damn inpulsive most of the time. Keeps life interesting.

Chipsahoy · 25/10/2020 19:26

5 months after meeting a boyfriend we were in the states together (he’s American) trying to figure out how to be together without all the flying back and forth
So we googled it and up came an elopement package and we booked it. Three days later we got married. I was only 21.
Absolute madness. No regrets. Fifteen years and three kids later and we are happy as Larry together.

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 25/10/2020 19:28

Met a lovely man on the Internet when it was a really new thing. Having bought my house in the December, by October he had moved in, sold his house, and I was on the way to selling mine. 3 joint houses, 30 years later, still together.. Still love him to bits. Best decision, ever.

Cocolapew · 25/10/2020 19:35

Agreed to get married after 3 weeks, we've been married 25 years.

namechange7438 · 25/10/2020 19:44

@MadameBlobby I've just done this too 😂 got rid of newer car to buy an older version (particular model is my dream car - I've had one before, been obsessed with them for 15+ years and know them inside out and backwards also the old ones are known to be bullet proof.... The newer one is a known dud) my previous car was misbehaving and in a fit of pique I looked on auto trader and up popped the car I've now bought..... Stupidly low mileage and immaculate. So that was it lol. Partner thinks I'm insane

DanFmDorking · 25/10/2020 20:21

@namechange7438
A Mercedes?
I think I'd agree with you Smile

G1antSkelet0n · 25/10/2020 20:27

Bought a property at auction, just viewed the information pack, didn't view it until after the purchase

Did I regret - no

Currently live in the property
Nice neighbours
Nice area

Sunbird24 · 25/10/2020 20:34

Bought a sports car. Love it, have the roof down whenever possible.

Millie2013 · 25/10/2020 20:41

17 years ago, OH bought a horse in a pub, after a few too many (just to clarify that the horse wasn’t actually in the pub) Grin
He’s not keen on horses and is allergic to them

17 years later, the horse is still a much loved part of the family, even though she’s a complete idiot Grin

VetOnCall · 25/10/2020 20:48

Upped sticks and moved to Canada in the space of 6 weeks - it's been 2 years this month!

Lots of other travel related ones too.
