To ask the most impulsive thing you’ve ever done

And whether you regretted it?

Mine was when I was backpacking in South Africa in my twenties. It was so hot and humid that one day I suddenly decided to cut off my waist length hair to about an inch long all over with my nail scissors in my hostel room. It felt amazing and I had no regrets until a few months later when it was at the awkward in-between length.

Another was the time, following a breakup, I quit my job and moved to the other end of the country. Initially regretted it as the isolation from all my friends was hard but now I’m really happy here and glad I did it.

Would love to hear yours!

I applied for an evening college course on a whim. I had crap school grades and I was 24 at the time, so thought it would boost my CV a little.

I started a week later and it totally changed the direction of my life! From there I got advanced entry to a part-time degree, then I did a Masters and now I’m doing a PhD with a view to becoming a lecturer. All because I said ‘fuck it, I’ll put in an application’ one bored evening Grin

Wellsbells · 25/10/2020 16:14

@amusedbush love it!
@pepsicolagirl sorry for your loss Flowers
Thank you x
She went peacefully in mine and my sons arms without pain and after a life full of love. I can only hope for the same when it's my time.

Ylvamoon · 25/10/2020 16:16

Mine was not quite as ad hock as cutting my hair off.
But I thought it would be fun to drive 14 hours across Europe on my own and spend 4 weeks on a campsite in France (I don't speak the lingo) with 2 DC aged 3 & 8.
It was fun honestly... but also bloody hard work!
Youngest DC escaped several times at 6am running to the playground in his PJ's ... I still remember the the dinosaur pattern pale blue and dark grey/ green dinosaurs.

elp30 · 25/10/2020 16:16

I had pen pals as a teenager (I'm American) and in my mid-20's, I still wrote to a few. I invited one to visit me from England and we got along quite well. I only spent 42 days within 2.5 years with him and I moved to England with my four-year-old son to marry him. We celebrate our 25 year marriage next year.

Quick decision that I regret? Moving from Berkshire to Greater Manchester. It was an emotional decision because my husband's family is there and we wanted our children to be near them but it was husband's career suicide. He was able to WFH but then that job ended. We discovered most telecom jobs were office and SE-centric and he couldn't find another job in the NW. We ended up bankrupt and had to move to the US and start our lives over. It has been 16 years and we still regret that quick decision.

I've done the hair thing - shaved my head when I had bum length hair. Never regretted it and I still keep it very short many years later.

I think the most impulsive thing was my decision to drop out of Uni. I really wasn't enjoying it and I was ill all the time. One day I decided I'd had enough and applied to rent a flat halfway across the country in the city a guy I had been talking to online for a few weeks lived in.

Also no regrets, we've been happily together for 12 years now and I still live in the same area. Fell in love with the city and I never want to leave.

annabell22 · 25/10/2020 16:20

Said yes when invited to Dubai for new year by a man I'd been on three dates with (with two days' notice). We are a month away from ten years together, over four years of those married.

HalloweenGhostlyHare · 25/10/2020 16:22

was having lunch with a friend and we had a glass of wine too many and walked into a travel agent and asked for them to choose a place for us to go for a week.

Two hours later we were heading to the airport to fly to Tokyo.

Bloody brilliant it was.

Gumbo · 25/10/2020 16:23

I've got several, but the main ones are:

Emigrated to the other side of the world very suddenly - i knew nobody there and had no idea where I'd live or even sleep the night I got off the plane . Still live there, no regrets.

Got married to someone I didn't know well and had only just started dating Hmm. Still together many years later...

AuntieMarys · 25/10/2020 16:24

Told my ex dh I didn't want to be married to him anymore out of the blue. ( to him) Best thing I ever did.

Entrant6 · 25/10/2020 16:25

Final wedding dress wedding six weeks before the wedding. Suddenly realised he was not the right one for me. Saw him that night, called the whole thing off and a week later bought a one way ticket to Australia (where one and a half years later I met my husband of now nearly 20 years).

Nailgirl · 25/10/2020 16:31

I’m in the middle of one. Except it has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to move back to my home and where I grew up. Still not the right time and I’m 50 with two children and an ex from hell. It will never be the right time and next time we could have the chance would be in another 5-10 years and I can’t wait that long. Against all the odds I’ve secured a Wonderful job, put the house on the market, packed the house and got the kids into local outstanding schools in the new area - we move in weeks. I’m crapping myself. I feel hope that the unhappiness I had for years with an abusive ex giving me grief is behind us. Oh my god I hope this is the right thing.

Wellsbells · 25/10/2020 16:40

@Nailgirl wishing you lots of luck, it sounds like the right decision to me Smile

I’m a huge fan of a particular singer/songwriter and ten years ago was spending a lot of time on a forum dedicated to him. A poster I vaguely knew, a woman roughly my own age (late 20s), had a spare ticket to a gig of his in Europe - I impulsively said I would take it and we decided to share a hotel room as well to save costs. We hit it off straight away, and ten years later she’s my best friend and I’m going to be MOH at her wedding next year. I’m very Hmm that it even happened as it’s so unlike me to do something so out of my comfort zone, but perhaps I should do it more often!

muckandnettles · 25/10/2020 16:49

I answered an ad in the paper in the lonely hearts column as it used to be called. Married him. I've never told anyone IRL that's how we met!

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh · 25/10/2020 17:25

These all make me so happy. I wonder how many 'impulse' decisions are instincts that we can't describe any other way? I've had many 'impulse' moments that have changed the course of my life, and always for the better, like taking Philosophy over History for A Level, and when I saw my husband for the first time and thought, 'Yep, that's my one'. Our brains know more than we think they do!

Thingsdogetbetter · 25/10/2020 17:29

Moved to Cambodia (for 3 years) after watching original Tomb Raider film. No regrets!

Bearnecessity · 25/10/2020 17:42

Drove to Galway because I fancied it found a job, lived for two years , had a hoot fell preggers returned to U.K. No regrets....

Henio · 25/10/2020 17:46

Had sex in the back of a delivery van (classy I know) don't regret it though, the sex was great

Pickypolly · 25/10/2020 17:48

Booked a very expensive holiday for me and my family.

After a massive, life affirming incident that blew my mind completely and shoved down my throat how short life is to be saving money for a rainy day.
Money should be spent on joy and family togetherness.

No, absolutely no regrets. It was worth every penny.

ZombieOtter · 25/10/2020 17:49

Bought a (second) horse on impulse and then had to hide it for approx 18 months while I figured out how the hell to tell my husband😂.

Ohfrigginghellers · 25/10/2020 17:53

Slept with a waiter whilst on holiday in Greece Blush

Alloftheboys · 25/10/2020 17:56

@ZombieOtter

I’ve got visions of a horse with a sheet thrown over it in your living room 😂

heidbuttsupper · 25/10/2020 17:57

Always wanted to live by the sea. My husband passed away and I upped sticks to the coast, not knowing anyone. That was just over a year ago and it was the best decision l ever made.
