AIBU to think that if there was an election tomorrow most people would still vote for a Tory Government.

OP posts:
Snowdrop30 · 25/10/2020 08:54

Labour last time, SNP now

jetadore · 25/10/2020 09:05

Britain (well, England) is a conservative country. The trauma of WW2 was such a shock that people took leave of their senses and founded things like the NHS and the welfare state but normal order has now been resumed with business and the media aligned behind decades of conservative and diet-conservative (Nu-lab, Starmer) government, with anything remotely resembling socialism (Foot, Corbyn) failing miserably at the polls.

EasternDailyStress · 25/10/2020 09:07

Sadly, Tory voters only vote to improve their own lot, rather than anyone else's. So yes, I think they'll get in again, with promises of tax cuts and banning immigrants.

Tory voters are selfish and stupid IMO.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 25/10/2020 09:29

They’re not my beloved Labour. I’m a centrist, but the Tories have pulled so far to the right that of course you would assume that anyone to the left of you is in love with Labour

This is always very tiresome On these threads, dh has been a tory voter for most of his life (whenever he voted...which wasnt often same as myself) but he LOATHES this current government.

You can be a tory and still LOATHE what this current bunch of charmless nurks are doing

And saying you dont like the tory party does NOT mean you are a labour supporter....i know 😀 mind blown!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/10/2020 09:33

I've been a floating voter sine I was 18: I don't care much fr 'brand loyalty' when it comes to politics.

I voted Labour last time but ..... I'm seriously concerned about their approach to women's rights: I think that the Conservatives are doing more for us there.

To be honest, I'd have a dilemma if there were an election tomorrow. But I'd vote: I always vote.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2020 09:34

Tory voters are selfish and stupid IMO clearly the Corbyn lovers still haven’t learnt any lessons!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 25/10/2020 09:38

And again

More parties are available...and some people dont vote at all

And...you can vote labour and LOATHE the current labour party and Corbyn

JeezLouisePlease · 25/10/2020 09:39

Genuine question.....

In the last election our local labour candidate had been in power for years and done nothing for the town. Milked it for his own profit. So many people wanted him out and the only way was to vote Tory.

In addition, many people wanted a Labour Party without Corbyn so couldn’t bring themselves to vote labour for that reason either.

When you need your local labour candidate to be gone for what they’re doing to your town, despite wanting to vote labour in principle, how the hell do you make that choice?

My vote is always torn between what’s good for our town locally and the bigger picture of government. It’s sometimes an impossible choice due to how our voting system works.

Absolutely, a number if my friends have exactly this issue

FrippEnos · 25/10/2020 09:46

@sally067

Loving the made up numbers.

Also loving that you ignore those that don't vote.

Yogawithmydog · 25/10/2020 09:53

Pic attached - Just some fuckups this year alone, and yet they can't feed hungry kids? Will never vote Tory ever. The Selfish Party.

would you vote the same or
Clavinova · 25/10/2020 09:54

Yes, I would still vote Conservative.

I certainly don't agree with Labour's manifesto pledge to give all UK residents full voting rights, including in general elections, regardless of citizenship - remind me which other European country allows that?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/25/labour-members-back-motion-give-all-uk-residents-full-voting-rights

January 2020 - LabourList;

"Labour leadership candidate Keir Starmer has revealed his support for the policy of awarding full voting rights–including in general elections–to EU nationals living in the UK."

"Nondiscriminatory national voting rights are rare, with New Zealand being a notable exception."

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2020 10:00

RufustheSniggeringReindeer yes there other parties but we know if comes down to two really, like (I would think) most people I voted Torie holding my nose to stop Corbyn.

Noitjustwontdo · 25/10/2020 10:02

Yep I would vote Labour again and again but agree with you, the Tories would probably still win.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 25/10/2020 10:22

Yes the stories would still win they have a very comfortable majority and Brexit isn’t over yet

I would vote Labour As now they have a leader I feel is a suitable candidate to run the country but I am a labour supporter like other not while Corbyn was leader as I didn’t like what the party had become (no I didn’t vote Tory)

I the the Tories would still win unfortunately Keir Starmer hasn’t been leader long enough to mend the party and because of Covid he hasn’t had much of a public platform but I remain hopeful for the next election

Have no idea who the leader is of the Liberal Democrat’s are or even if they have one

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 25/10/2020 10:23

The Tories not stories

But an apt Freudian slip

Lily193 · 25/10/2020 10:28

Absolutely I would. No question. I imagine the Tories would win but with a much reduced majority.

user1497207191 · 25/10/2020 10:54

@Noitjustwontdo

Yep I would vote Labour again and again but agree with you, the Tories would probably still win.
Given that there are nearly 3 million self employed excluded from the Covid support schemes, many of whom will be historic Tory supporters, the Tories may suffer a nasty surprise. Those 3 million won't vote Tory any time soon. (2.9 million as per Office of National Statistics, so a reputable source!).
Oblomov20 · 25/10/2020 11:05

I have always struggled to vote. I don't like any of them.
Many people I know who did vote conservative still would. I have trouble accepting that.

nosswith · 25/10/2020 11:08

A lot of people would vote Conservative, as there would be the combination of a 'red scare' and the belief that only a Labour/SNP arrangement was the alternative and hate the Scots or the SNP.

Though voting for a government led by Mr Johnson is voting for a government made up of members of the Conservative party, not for a Conservative government.

lovelemoncurd · 25/10/2020 12:31

How much does Boris Johnson and his weirdo toff friends actually have to fuck up before some people come to their senses. I never realised the degree of brain death people suffer from until I looked at these threads!

slashlover · 25/10/2020 13:27

I voted SNP and would do so again.

C130 · 25/10/2020 13:29

I could never bring myself to vote tory. The amount of people who would still vote for these clowns, even now, speaks volumes.

user1497207191 · 26/10/2020 16:12

@Oblomov20

I have always struggled to vote. I don't like any of them. Many people I know who did vote conservative still would. I have trouble accepting that.
Thing is that "normal" people aren't attracted to the job of party leader. Many don't want the disruption to their family lives of the workload, stress, endless meetings, endless foreign travel, etc. Many don't want to live in a goldfish bowl where the minutae of their lives (and their families) is scrutinised by the media. There are lots of "normal" MPs who'd make good ministers but they don't want the negatives that come with the job. Take the Libdem MP, Tim Farron, who was leader for a short time a few years ago. He's a brilliant local MP, works tirelessly for his constituency, and very popular. He'd be a brilliant LidDem leader, but he was hounded out because of his (pretty normal) Christian views.
LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 26/10/2020 16:23

I would still vote the same. I would vote Labour. At every general election since I was eligible to vote I have evaluated the choice. I have always, ultimately, voted Labour. Sometimes the choice was clearer than others. Recently, it’s not been difficult to decide at all. The clear, to me the only socially responsible choice, is to vote Labour. Whilst it is an imperfect option, there is at least an attempt therein to promote social justice. The Tories (and to an extent people who, having understood what they are about, still vote for them) don’t actually give a fuck about social justice, or poverty, or inequality.
