To think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator?

Half the shops covered in plastic. Can’t buy clothes, duvets, books, DVDs, tins but not tin openers.
All the Halloween and bonfire night stuff that’s just been stocked is behind a cordon. Presumably now destined for landfill.

Autumn half term after a shitty year and I can’t even do a few seasonal treats for the kids.

AIBU to think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator, and that his ridiculous game of Covid oneupmanship with Nicola and Boris needs to stop!?

I simply don't understand the logic of this. All that it achieves is doing Amazon a massive favour.

LittleLapwing · 24/10/2020 08:08

@ReallySpicyCurry

This is insane.

I haven't been following Wales, but does this apply to, say, an independent toy shop? Have they been closed?

This is just utter nonsense now, isn't it?

Yes everything.

What are business rates like in Wales? surely look at that for the independents

PinkFondantFancy · 24/10/2020 08:12

I can't believe anyone's supporting this. A) it'll never be 2 weeks b) what does anyone really think 2 weeks will achieve anyway - absolutely nothing c) how is ok for someone to tell you what's socially acceptable to buy or not in your local tesco and d) the plastic waste!!! Everything wrapped in plastic, all that fireworks and Halloween stuff binned. Absolutely outrageous. I cannot believe this is happening. For a virus with a 99.8% survival rate.

Flying “I can understand his reasoning, and it is only 17 days. If the shops have decided that stationary isn’t essential then it’s them that has made that decision, not WG.”

Of course the shops haven’t made the decision.

You’re trolling us aren’t you?

MiracletoCome · 24/10/2020 08:17

People must have voted for him though...

Mamimawr · 24/10/2020 08:17

The Welsh Government have said the lockdown will be for 17 days and everyone I've talked to believes this. All through this pandemic they have told us the truth.

The vast majority of people on Twitter etc who are shocked about the lockdown and not being able to buy non essential goods live outside Wales. It's only for 17 days, we'll be fine. No need to worry about us.

AcornAutumn · 24/10/2020 08:18

Yes

But who would have predicted this from a Conservative government in England? So I can imagine if the Welsh are shocked.

Shangrilalala · 24/10/2020 08:18

And our massive Tesco was rammed yesterday - no chance of socially distancing at all. Packed with shoppers filling their trolleys with drinks before the Joy Pollce in The Senedd turn their attention to anything else which people might enjoy.

What on earth do you think it's going to achieve?
Sandybdnas · 24/10/2020 08:20

No need to worry about us

I don't think people are losing sleep over it, but it's worrying how easily this level of control is accepted, and the backwards reasoning for decisions.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 24/10/2020 08:20

@Mamimawr that’s not what I’m hearing at all. Everyone I know thinks it’s madness to go back into lockdown and doesn’t trust Mark Drakeford anymore than he trusts his constituents in the Tesco cushion aisle!

ExemptFromMasksSupporter · 24/10/2020 08:20

@SebastianTheCrab

I thought he was until I read that he did it because smaller stores are being forced to shut so this stops supermarkets being given yet more of an advantage. It may be untrue though, I don't know.
Yes I thought the same, I can understand this reasoning but I can also see that it does seem to be a step to far. It’s a difficult balance, but I do wonder if this rule will just anger people even more making general compliance less likely.
unmarkedbythat · 24/10/2020 08:21

You can't buy tin openers? That's... who drew this list up?!

Another little man with power choosing to abuse it. It’s actually really scary how the population is being shut down and policed.

MiracletoCome · 24/10/2020 08:24

Surely those that haven’t got Amazon Prime might buy it now and then of course if you have bought it you will use it and carry on using it after the 17 days so less shops will get business in the long run.

onedayinthefuture · 24/10/2020 08:25

Whenever I'm in a supermarket, the non essential aisles are never busy, just a very normal trickle of shoppers. Surely this is just going to make things worse in the lead up to Christmas, we need people spreading out their purchases. I don't think anyone in power really has a clue what they are doing, I really don't.

Userofname · 24/10/2020 08:25

I'm in Scotland and we were told that the Central belt pubs and restaurants would be shut for 16 days. That's now be extended for another week...then the 5 level plan comes in (because the English 3 tiers are not enough)...no doubt a further extension. And so on and so on. Queen Nic and your Mark are bloody loving the power.

wanderings · 24/10/2020 08:25

Drakeford is making Saint Boris the Bellend look sane.

I only hope we don't get the latter deciding to be a copycat as well as a bellend.

And yes, there will be lots of unintended consequences from this, panic buying probably being the lesser of them.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/10/2020 08:26

You can still buy lottery tickets ffs. How are these in any way essential??

cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 08:26

Although who knows maybe his next plan will be to turn away Amazon lorries at the Welsh border

There is a poster on Times Online called "celtic cousin" who thinks exactly this - all non-essential home deliveries should be stopped during lockdown. S/he tells everyone who disagrees with them that they are English, Tory and middle class and Welsh people are quite happy about all of this because they like to help each other, unlike those nasty people in England.

Natsel84 · 24/10/2020 08:26

My father died Thursday, from covid . ( dont even ask ) covering clothes and non essential items , will not cure covid ... I have the rage!

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 08:27

Is it a political thing? Is it purely because they are Labour and want to do stuff to annoy Westminster?
