AIBU not to have let her in without a mask.

I know masks are a touchy subject and I am not against people who are exempt from masks. I don’t judge or shout at people in the supermarket 🤣
Today I had British gas turn up at the door for meter readings, she was a little rude when I wouldn’t let her in the house ( CEV house ) as she was not wearing a mask. She explained that she was exempt but right now we are in teir 2 no household mixing etc was I unreasonable not to let her in without a mask. She kept telling me she was exempt so therefore did not require to wear a mask
Which like I said I would usually accept but not when they are coming in to my house. I do not take DD ( CEV ) in to shops etc.

@FinallyHere

Let's face it, no one would give a seconds consideration to a surgeon who claimed to be exempt from wearing a mask.
Surgeons who refuse to wear a mask won't be allowed to operate. It's pretty black and white. Not being able to wear a mask pretty much excludes surgery as a career choice.
TurquoiseDragon · 23/10/2020 11:40

The energy company may not even employ her. My understanding is that meter reading is something contracted out.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/10/2020 11:43

You can still dictate notes while wearing a mask Hmm[/quote]
Not when recordings of over an hour get sent off to India for trasncribing you can't. Do you not think I have tried it and found it to be unsatisfactory?

And no property needs to be occupied whilst I am in it anyway! No tenant or landlord needs to be present during Inventory or Check Out. So they are currently not allowed to be! Industry guidance for clerks os to have 48 - 73 hours of non occupancy before we go in. For Check Ins Keys are to be handed over at the door, clerk to have completed checks prior to ingoing tenant arriving. Interim Inspections don't need transcription so masks are worn, windows and doors opened wide!

It's my job, my health, my covid rules! If any landlord, agent or tenant disagree then I just don't do the job!

Purpledaisychain · 23/10/2020 11:45

My dad is a meter reader. He always wears a mask when entering someone else's home. Even with a mask, people can still refuse him entry.

AldiAisleofCrap · 23/10/2020 11:47

The energy company needs to redeploy her , it’s not ok for her to go house to house like that.

Piewraith · 23/10/2020 11:48

It's fair because you didn't force her to wear a mask, as there were other options available that didn't involve her wearing one (they send someone else or you submit own reading).

Purpledaisychain · 23/10/2020 11:49

@TurquoiseDragon

Yes meter reading is contracted out in some cases. However, people who do this job are still answerable to the companies that hire them. It is not a field of work where they allow people to be slapdash.

Jaxhog · 23/10/2020 11:49

Well, I would! Even in non-Covid times.

Trialanderror02 · 23/10/2020 11:49

@CuriousaboutSamphire I am confused surely that’s a different situation
Not occupied for 3 days ? Well we live here 🤷‍♀️

Have you worked as a Medical Secretary/PA? Audio typing is a valued skill largely because of the ability to make sense out of garbled, muffled nonsense where people seem to lose interest halfway through words, never mind sentences and there are plenty of tapes where it sounds as though the dictation's been done whilst the recording device is safely stored in either a wastepaper bin or locked in a desk drawer three offices away.

The last thing anyone needs is adding a mask to the shit sound quality and poor dictating technique.

shinynewapple2020 · 23/10/2020 11:53

I think that's fair enough if people are doing jobs where they go into other people's houses they should be prepared to either wear a mask or have people choose not to let them in .

We have certainly had people in our house without a mask but that was in the summer when levels were a lot lower . I might think twice now.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 23/10/2020 11:54

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Sounds like a very different situation to the OPs situation, and so irrelevant to it. Still think that wearing a mask doesn't affect dictating notes, no matter how long you wear it for or where it is going for dictation. But obviously no need for you to wear one if in an unoccupied property Hmm.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/10/2020 11:55

@Trialanderror02 Sorry, that was a reply to AN Other poster. I was trying to point out that alternative procedures are possible for everyone... we've all had enough time to work it out!

In your situation I would do as I do for interim inspections, wash my hands, mask up and keep my distance.

Branleuse · 23/10/2020 11:58

I have googled but i still cant work out what a CEV house is

SunshineCake · 23/10/2020 11:59

I wonder if she is exempt like the bloke was last month who wanted to go into McDonald's who claimed he had COPD and when we walked past ten minutes later was all arguing with the worker saying he was dyslexic so was exempt from mask wearing.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 23/10/2020 11:59

@Branleuse

I'm assuming CEV is clinically extremely vulnerable.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 23/10/2020 12:00

I have no issue at all with people being exempt from mask wearing in any other situation but no they would not be coming into my home.

I fully understand people are exempt for many reasons , no issue at all but I'm afraid it does not change that they may be able to spread the virus more easily. Not their fault and no they shouldn't have to wear masks but they also will not come into my home , which is very much our safe space and noone has the right to insist due to exemptions. I would have a problem with her being rude because why do her needs trump mine in my own home ? In public crack on , so to speak I defend anyones rights to not be distressed unduly or have their health impacted (we are mask wearers but then we are not exempt ) but hell no in my home.

Trialanderror02 · 23/10/2020 12:00

I think it’s meant be clinically extremely vulnerable, my DD is was ok the shielding list.

YANBU

BG probably shouldn’t be sending people who can’t wear masks into people’s homes in the current climate.

If I can’t even have my parents or a friend in my house at all there’s zero chance I’d have some random in without a mask.

Cantthinkofausename · 23/10/2020 12:01

I wouldve let her in to be honest, you didnt need to go near her

mumwon · 23/10/2020 12:02

I would complain to the meter company

Trialanderror02 · 23/10/2020 12:03

@Cantthinkofausename why am I allowed to have her in the house, but not a nurse ?

OP posts:
Zippy1510 · 23/10/2020 12:03

Not unreasonable in the slightest. To be blunt people who are exempt are more likely to get/ carry covid if they are continuing to go out in public as normal without any protection. You absolutely do not need them coming into your house and risking your families health for the sake of a meter reading.

Branleuse · 23/10/2020 12:03

thanks for telling me what CEV means.

Youre totally right to not let her in.

Trialanderror02 · 23/10/2020 12:04

I have emailed a complaint
Thanks everyone.
