AIBU?

AIBU not to have let her in without a mask.

I know masks are a touchy subject and I am not against people who are exempt from masks. I don’t judge or shout at people in the supermarket 🤣
Today I had British gas turn up at the door for meter readings, she was a little rude when I wouldn’t let her in the house ( CEV house ) as she was not wearing a mask. She explained that she was exempt but right now we are in teir 2 no household mixing etc was I unreasonable not to let her in without a mask. She kept telling me she was exempt so therefore did not require to wear a mask
Which like I said I would usually accept but not when they are coming in to my house. I do not take DD ( CEV ) in to shops etc.

YANBU at all. Anybody can claim to be exempt when in fact there is absolutely nothing wrong with their health they just don’t want to wear a mask, end of. And before anybody jumps on me, I actually know somebody who straight admits this and just shows their Internet downloaded card (which anybody can download) when questioned.

@flaviaritt

I’d have let her in and just kept my distance. The masks are only useful in close proximity. She’s exempt and trying to do her job.

She says she's exempt. No one on here know if that's actually true, or if she was just being an arse.

As much as I usually agree with the sentiment of ‘your house your rules’, it does seem a bit of an overreaction not to let someone in your house for about 2 minutes. It’s not like you’d need to stand close to this person, Covid was not going to jump from that healthy unmasked person and straight up your nostrils in the amount of time it takes to check a meter. And you could have asked them to use sanitiser/opened any doors for them, used a wipe after they’d been.

Still, it’s up to you if you want to submit your own readings or let them give you an estimated bill.

True. I’m just saying I’d take her word for it and stay in another room for that 5 minutes.

Your house your rules. I wouldn't let anyone in without a mask here. Also ECV household. I am technically perfectly justified to claim exemption due to lung disease and they do make my breathing harder but I wear masks for my job up to 8 hours a day that are worse and I'm used to it now. Self exemption is a stupid way to do it yet totally understandable due to the resource required if it was GP issued certificates.

@NailsNeedDoing but yet a short few months ago we were advised not even take our own bins out 🤷‍♀️

@CuriousaboutSamphire

You can still dictate notes while wearing a mask Hmm

As a household two of us had to shield and we found British Gas were incredible with ensuring PPE was worn correctly, social distancing prioritised etc as we had to have them out about half a dozen times in April and May. I’m so shocked they aren’t putting those who are exempt from wearing a mask on jobs that don’t involve coming into contact with CEV people.

You weren’t wrong. I would have politely explained that she couldn’t come in too.

Whilst I agree with your home your rules, why is it acceptable to walk into a shop or small business and say you dont have to wear a mask as you are exempt, but it isn't acceptable for a working person who is exempt not to wear one? I think if you are shielding then under the circumstances I would say no one enters the house, mask or no mask. I was chatting to a lady working on a checkout who is exempt but needs to work, she receives a lot of abuse from customer for not wearing a mask.

@Alexandernevermind I’m guessing the same reason people are allowed to go the shops but not household share ( we are in tier 2 )

I can’t believe the woman would be stupid enough to think anyone would allow her into their house without a mask!!

You were being at all unreasonable. I wouldn’t have let her in either.

That was probably an overreaction too.

Just because she's 'exempt' from wearing a mask, it doesn't mean covid makes exceptions for her. She shouldn't be going in to multiple houses if she can't wear the correct PPE to do so. I'd make a 'suggestion' to the energy company that they redeploy her somewhere else for the duration of the pandemic.

Absolutely not unreasonable.

She's a joke for thinking people want her to walk around without a mask in someone's home. Talk about a lack of basic respect.

contact the company and ask for someone that is prepared to wear a mask as you have a vulnerable household.

No don't.
Contact the company to tell them they should not be sending an employee into anyone's home if they can't wear a mask.

Anyway, she could ask the customer to take a photo of their meter reading to show her, as she stays on the doorstep.

(What is ECV?)

@flaviaritt that seems like a good way of allowing yourself to be burgled! Never leave a stranger inside your home for any reason, no matter who they claim to be.

@Trialanderror02, Was she wearing gloves, shoe covers or any other type of PPE? You definitely did the right thing by refusing entry.

Trialanderror02 · 23/10/2020 11:32

@NailsNeedDoing my point being is if you spent months receiving letters saying your child is extremely vulnerable and would more likely get very sick if caught covid over and over again. Have letters telling you not to take bins out, not to leave your house at all or have a anyone in your house ( we was not allowed any help )
You would find it easy to just put that behind you as an over reaction.

I'd also be calling British Gas to make them aware she's not wearing a mask. If she's actually exempt then they'll already know and it won't be an issue - if she's lying though......

@FinallyHere

Let's face it, no one would give a seconds consideration to a surgeon who claimed to be exempt from wearing a mask.

They wouldn't be a surgeon then would they

@Trialanderror02 she was wearing nothing and she was not socially distancing from the door step either, I made sure I moved backwards and asked her to take a step back.

On comparison our home medical company who deliver our medical supplies come to the door step wearing masks etc ) previous to this that had to physically put the IV bags in to the medical fridge / read temp of fridge etc ) now they leave the box at door step stand away, I take IV bags and wipe them down etc put them in the fridge and tell him the fridge temp.

YANBU.

No one gets over our doorstep without wearing a mask. Even a PC who called. He had to go and get one.
