Kids sent home to isolate but going out

mollyandmcdonalds · 23/10/2020 10:29

I'm sat in Costa coffee. So far I've seen three groups of people, all with school age children, coming in and sitting down for a drink.

I obviously don't know the story for each, but AIBU to think that if kids are sent home from school to self isolate, they shouldn't be going out for a drink/shopping with their parents?

They're probably just visiting friends and family ....... from the Tier 3 area where they live😉

TCMcK · 23/10/2020 13:49

🤣🤣🤣

Wiredforsound · 23/10/2020 13:50

They may have come from a school outside the area which is on half term.

SeasonFinale · 23/10/2020 13:52

@mollyandmcdonalds

I did say IF.

No schools around here finish until today.

You actually do not know that. Most schools break up today but ours broke up yesterday and go back on Tuesday when other go back on Monday. MYOB

Well previous posters have already pointed out the most likely, and obvious reason. Also Covid 19 hasn't stopped the usual stuff that happens to people. Toothache, ear ache stomach bug, bereavements etc plenty of reasons why a child might not be in school, but too young to be left at home so has to follow mum to asda for the food shop.

Its depressing that people automatically jump to you should be isolating, because they have seen children out in public.

Angel2702 · 23/10/2020 13:57

Each schools set their own INSET days so although they might not finish term until today they could still be on INSET. My children’s schools rarely have the same INSET days.

lola006 · 23/10/2020 13:57

I have 1 with an inset day today (secondary) and 2 at school (different secondary and primary) and my DS was one of those kids roaming our town (McDonald’s and Costa) earlier.

Everyone else has said what I’m thinking (how do you know every schools inset days?) but some may have changed fairly last min. One of our schools decided only about 3 weeks ago to do a 2 week half term so even if I thought I knew all the term dates, that one had changed.

lucidnightmare · 23/10/2020 14:05

Schools don't decide who to send home... we have had a few cases in my school and each time its the local health board who come in, review all the seating plans for each class, talk to the pupil(s) concerned and any staff who might be at risk and then they decide who needs to self isolate. As its a secondary school it tends to be quite a lot. Different subjects with different groups of kids. Last time was a senior pupil and around half of their year group had to self isolate, along with 3 staff. Said child was in my classroom but its a study class, they never came near me and I was told I didn't need to isolate. All the pupils who were sitting near them did though.

lucidnightmare · 23/10/2020 14:08

That said, a further 20 or so kids took the opportunity to stay off saying they needed to isolate as they were 'maybe sorta near them in the dining hall' or whatever... Hmm But that was their choice, not told to by school or track & trace.

yawnsvillex · 23/10/2020 14:08

It's half term for us

grey12 · 23/10/2020 14:08

DD1 had to isolate after having a run of the mill flu. After the first 2 days she was perfectly fine.

I understand the school needs to play it safe but going to a cafe with their parents, separate from other people, shouldn't be an issue. At school they are playing together with lots of kids from different households, right? In a cafe, a parent orders while wearing a mask and then the family sits by themselves in a table.

SueEllenMishke · 23/10/2020 14:10

They will have broken up for half term. DS finished yesterday- all other schools in the area finish today. You can't possibly know the term dates of all schools in your surrounding area.

marmite79 · 23/10/2020 14:12

How do you know they are isolating?

My two finished for half term today at 1pm. Many schools had inset days today or even yesterday. Some schools have two weeks (even before covid this is thing in some schools in my area - saving inset days and having 2 weeks half term).

cantdothisnow1 · 23/10/2020 14:17

Probably an inset day and some kids are home ed any way. Some of our local schools have broken up early due to staff shortages but that wouldn't require all children to self isolate. I wouldn't assume they are breaking rules.

TiersTiersTiers · 23/10/2020 14:29

Guesswork. @mollyandmcdonalds

So it's also difficult to guess the answer then.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 23/10/2020 14:41

There have been large groups of high school age kids out everyday the past couple of weeks in my area. Schools definitely not on half term but many have year groups sent home to isolate.
Our local shops have had to stop them all going into them in groups. No wonder our local rates are increasingly at a drastic rate

LittleBipper · 23/10/2020 14:48

I thought we had more beady eyes on us when out and about with a school age kid the last few weeks, this must be why 🙄

we home educate, I guess people think we're isolation dodging

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 23/10/2020 15:34

Be interesting to know the area, my sons school is the only one in the area that actually broke up last Friday as they went back early from main holidays so that is always a possibility

Halliehallie9828 · 23/10/2020 15:41

My daughters school split for half term Wednesday. My sons school is today. Same council area, different schools.

Mind your own business.

Sheknowsaboutme · 23/10/2020 15:44

My son is out playing. Inset day. He will be home at 5:59.

Watermelon999 · 23/10/2020 15:52

OP our dcs are on an inset day today.

However, I went shopping about 3 weeks ago, and was amazed at the amount of school age kids shopping with parents, and I admit the same thing crossed my mind....

BigBadVoodooHat · 23/10/2020 15:55

@mollyandmcdonalds

I did say IF.

No schools around here finish until today.

You've checked for inset days/staff shortage closures in every single school in your local area?

Fucking hell, pet. Find yourself a decent book to read. There have got to be better ways to spend your time. Hmm

VainAbigail · 23/10/2020 15:59

Fucking hell, pet

🤣

Op, my kids go to 4 schools. One was on inset today. All 4 schools are in the same area.

HTH.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 24/10/2020 13:26

Yes it could be inset day!
Lots of private school broke up last week too and will be off for 2 or 3 weeks.

However... My own dd has been self isolate with her class this week and I know from her zoom calls some of those dc have been out, hopefully walks in woods.. But loads have been out.
