Kids sent home to isolate but going out

mollyandmcdonalds · 23/10/2020 10:29

I'm sat in Costa coffee. So far I've seen three groups of people, all with school age children, coming in and sitting down for a drink.

I obviously don't know the story for each, but AIBU to think that if kids are sent home from school to self isolate, they shouldn't be going out for a drink/shopping with their parents?

So you’ve made an assumption..
half term , inset day , none of your business.
Pick one

Tattoocrazymum · 23/10/2020 11:15

How do you know ALL schools finish today?
I have 2 teenagers who finished yesterday and my primary school child finishes today

What if they are home schooled
What if school shut due to staff shortage because of covid (happened to a local school to me)

Dont poke your beak in where its not needed Hmm

MondeoFan · 23/10/2020 11:19

Also private schools around this area broke up on Wednesday. So they've been off a couple of days already.

Planty13 · 23/10/2020 11:21

YANBU OP. Our local secondary school has most the kids isolating. Parents are then dragging these kids to pick up younger siblings from the local primary school. Baffling

myhobbyisouting · 23/10/2020 11:57

Pretty rare for every school in the area to have half term starting on the same day.

Schools have been breaking up here for the past week

myhobbyisouting · 23/10/2020 11:59

In fact why not ask them? I bet the answer is yes when you ask if it's half term at their school.

Noitjustwontdo · 23/10/2020 11:59

A lot of schools broke up yesterday and some parents have decided to home school so yeah, YABU.

Acerred · 23/10/2020 12:03

Some schools are sending pupils home as a precaution rather than because they need to self isolate so you have no idea why these ones are not in school - they could be in the precautionary group, they could be home educated or they could be off because there is a shortage of teachers.

Rollercoaster1920 · 23/10/2020 12:04

My child is isolating due to a classmate testing positive. I saw someone from her class in the park. So I wouldn't be surprised to see children that are supposed to be isolating in a cafe.

BigRedBoat · 23/10/2020 12:55

Why do you know the dates of all the inset days for all the local school Confused

Comefromaway · 23/10/2020 12:58

@BigRedBoat

Why do you know the dates of all the inset days for all the local school Confused
To be fair to the OP I used to know that info (but I ran an out of school activity for school aged children!)
everyothernamewastaken · 23/10/2020 13:01

Why would you jump to the conclusion that they've been sent home to isolate?

yellowmaoampinball · 23/10/2020 13:04

You would enjoy your Costa a lot more if you didn't completely fabricate a reason to get angry at other customers.

TheSoapyFrog · 23/10/2020 13:05

At my son's school, several children in his bubble had covid symptoms and were told to isolate. The other children in the bubble who had symptoms were told not to attend school but that they didn't need to isolate outside of school.
However, if just one child has symptoms, the rest can still attend school.

onemouseplace · 23/10/2020 13:07

Private schools are on half term this week where I am.

Although, I have also seen 3 families out and about with children who I know for a fact are in a year that should be self-isolating.

ghostyslovesheets · 23/10/2020 13:11

two of mine broke up last week and have a 2 week half term (which is normal for their school) and one finished yesterday as today is a training day - so maybe they have a perfectly legitimate reason for being out - which is not your business

SuitedandBooted · 23/10/2020 13:14

My kids broke up last Thursday. Private school in Hampshire.

How can anybody know the ins and outs of all schools, not to mention home educated children?

Just enjoy your coffee.

fekinekkerslike · 23/10/2020 13:17

My kids isolation ended today, they should be at school but 1 day back then half term seemed more confusing to me. So we have been for a really good walk something we all needed.

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 23/10/2020 13:18

Some kids are on half term or inset days.

However I did talk to a grandad in the school queue today who clearly thought (ie had been told by parents) that his yr 9 gdd only had to stay off school when sent home due to Covid in her class and could go out and about as she pleased.

Aragog · 23/10/2020 13:22

@Florencex

Schools don't get to just send kids home!
For each and every case they have to contact Public Health England, give them the information and then PHE tells schools what to do, who to send home to isolate and for how long.
Sometimes that is no one, sometimes it is a handful of children sometimes a full class, sometimes a year group and in some circumstances the whole school.

Schools should read the government guidance

Maybe you need to read the Government guidance and then you would have known the above to be the case.

Aragog · 23/10/2020 13:27

So far I've seen three groups of people, all with school age children, coming in and sitting down for a drink.

Could be lots of reasons, not just breaking SI rules.

Inset Day - these are often different for every school and are most often attached to a half term holiday like today

Visiting from outside the area, from an area already on half term (half term in October often varies and can span 2-3 weeks)

Private school - often have an extra day/week around half term. Our local independents always have this Friday, the one before half term in October, as a holiday.

SI finished yesterday and parents can't see the point of them going back for one day

Child is home schooled

Child is absent from school for a non Covid reason which doesn't involve SI

Teenagers calling for coffee during a 'free' lesson - this is common amongst sixth formers locally

coconuttyhead · 23/10/2020 13:27

DS school changed inset day to today here.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 23/10/2020 13:37

Me and dd (11) went out for breakfast this morning and tbh we did get a few strange looks.
Dds school broke up yesterday, and it's an inset day today. It is the only school I know of in the area doing that- a few are having inset days the Monday they should go back after half term iyswim.

But there is many reasons for kids to be off-
half term where they live and they are on holiday
Cheeky midterm holiday
Home ed
Inset day
The whole school is closed because a pupil has tested positive (this has happened locally)

Why judge a situation you know nothing about?

Pulloutbed · 23/10/2020 13:40

We don't live anywhere near DCs school. They have an inset day. The local schools here don't. So we were some of the only kids around today. We walked past a Costa too! Hi 👋

Pulloutbed · 23/10/2020 13:43

Its no different then me asking why you aren't at work on a Friday!
It's non of my business and about 100 reasons why you wouldn't be!
