To not want gnarly hands

What hand creams do you use that work wonders?
Nails are full of ridges, I use coconut oil which doesn't go down well as it takes so long to soak in. Constantly cleaning and hands in water.
What's your secret hand food?

In the long term use sun screen on your hands outside. I would have thought any cream would do day to day.

CSIblonde · 22/10/2020 18:38

Nivea extra rich body lotion 3 times a day & left on overnight. It's got almond oil in . I'm 52, no age spots, wrinkles etc hand wise & my nails no longer split & flake all the time which they used to. Buffing gets rid of ridges I think. Garnier 7day repair hand cream is also great but I'm on a budget now & the Nivea is dirt cheap!

LaBellina · 22/10/2020 18:41

I love Atrix handcream. My nan used it for years and I love the nostalgic scent but most important, it really works on dry hands. It's also very cheap.

Neutrogena handcream works well too as does the Hemp butter from the Body Shop.

Asterion · 22/10/2020 18:43

E40.

I don't think that hand cream will change your nails, though, if they are ridgey?

Bargebill19 · 22/10/2020 18:45

Oil of Olay for me. Anything greasy just sits on top and will get washed off.

Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 18:47

I started taking seven seas multivitamins too to see if that's was causing the ridges, too early to tell. I actually used to have really good eyebrows but they dont grow like they used to, lost lots of hair after my little girl but she's over 2 now.
You know when you just feel like you are going to pot Haha

The Body Shop's hemp hand cream. It's amazing and it sinks in really quickly.

Coldwinterahead1 · 22/10/2020 18:49

o'keeffe's working hands

Why don't you wear household gloves to protect your hands? Cleaning products will strip the skin of oils and make it sore.

Ginkypig · 22/10/2020 18:53

Any basic moisturiser but put quite a bit on either Just before bed with those cotton gloves you can sleep with them on but the bed stays clean or just before you do for example the dishes and put rubber gloves on so the heat from the water helps to open the pores and let the moisturiser soak in.

Nails probably needs you to be looking at diet or use of false nails or looks at how you treat your cuticles etc as it’s unlikely the issues will be sorted with creams.

BoudiccasBoudoir · 22/10/2020 18:53

The hand cream doesn't matter nearly as much as wearing appropriate gloves.

Ponoka7 · 22/10/2020 18:57

I second the Bodyshop's Hemp hamd cream and always wearing rubber gloves. You need minerals rather than vitamins. The cheap hair, skin, nails tablets from the likes of Wilkinsons are as good as the more expensive ones.

How old are you? It could also be hormonal.

Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 18:59

I've just purchased more gloves, kept ripping them. That was my thinking I'll see how the vitamins go and been trying to eat more nuts, avocados (little nibbles as the texture makes me heave) just wondered what everyone's using as their are so many products.

Body shop hemp handcream

Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 19:02

I'm 31, I'll keep wearing the gloves, cant wear the little cotton ones, remember using them years ago and I'd just remove them in my sleep. The hemp cream is sounding popular

Check your thyroid. Consider cutting gluten. Take selenium. This has cleared up my dry hands, brittle nails and hair loss. Might not be that but worth considering.

MiddleClassMother · 22/10/2020 19:08

Wear gloves when you're driving! Or just outside in general. My mother does this and still has youthful skin and hands in her 60s. For hand cream I use one from Aveeno.

ViciousJackdaw · 22/10/2020 19:08

So have you actually got 'gnarly hands' then or is it just the nails that are the issue? Also, do you have horizontal ridges at all or are they all vertical?

Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 19:53

@ViciousJackdaw they are vertical and I just wouldn't at present like my partner to put a ring on them haha, my nails grow up as normal but I also have to file the sides, anyone know what this is
@bramblyHedge I'll try selanium, anyone tried biotin tablets?

OP posts:
Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 19:54

By sides I mean where the skin is up the nail bed

Working Hands is excellent.

Gardengoddess · 22/10/2020 19:59

Currently sat googling loads of promising moisturisers, I used to be so good with my skin, since having kids you really do put yourself on the back burner dont you.

@BaconAndAvocado I'll have a look

Use olive oil at night. Go natural rather than throw chemicals at your skin.

ChocolateCherrybomb · 22/10/2020 21:22

Vaseline intensive care essential healing. Yellow one.
Cheapest in Bodycare and Savers.

I had a lot of problems with dry hands until I discovered it. I had previously discounted using it thinking it would be cheap rubbish. It is light and absorbs within a few minutes. Have to get into the habit of putting a circle the size of a 10p piece on every time you wet and dry your hands, which I admit can be a pain in the arse but you can only get smooth hands with commitment if they are really bad.

Whatever you use, you need a lotion, not a cream and certainly not an ointment. Cream/ointment is too greasy and just sits on top of the skin doing fuck all. Saying that though, it is sometimes good to put a lighter lotion on, let it soak in, then add a small amount of greasier cream on top to keep the moisture in but that's more of a nighttime thing.

Little and often and high in moisture is key.

You can also get some mens cotton sports socks, cut off the toe seam end, cut a little hole for you thumb, slather up before bed with something a bit richer and put the socks up your arms. May sound weird but it keeps more moisture in than cotton gloves, they stay on better and keep the area warm which increases absorption of any lotions and potions. Don't do it with anything with steroids in though, not supposed to cover that up as makes the steroids go into your bloodstream too much (or something like that, don't fully recall).

After years of trouble with dry hands and trying every cream going, I now have hands and nails as smooth as a baby's arse and I am knocking 50.

ChocolateCherrybomb · 22/10/2020 21:24

P.S whoops, forgot to say, my nails are very smooth also.
