I have just had a lovely 90 minutes Swedish massage today, but I find every time I have a massage I can’t stop thinking of ransoms things or jobs that need doing etc!

I try and empty my mind and enjoy the massage, but within a few minutes of doing that my mind wanders again!

Massages are expensive, I want to make the most of every second so how do I focus and enjoy?!

this is obviously lighthearted before anyone starts about first world problems etc

God I love a massage.
I usually try and think and feel my breathing, connecting to the relaxation.
But I am a mediating and yoga wanker Grin

Mydarlingsleepthief · 21/10/2020 14:29

@MonkeyPuddle Grin. I love them too, I wish I could afford to have one every day!

Comination of work, what chores need doing, whatever is stressing me at the minute, panicking about farting or breathing too loudly.

I'm no good at switching off.

saveforthat · 21/10/2020 14:32

I think about a summer holiday when I was relaxing on a beach.

Coralista · 21/10/2020 14:32

I’m ok till the point they try to relax you more by putting a weighted eye mask thing on and then I start thinking actually the therapist could be plotting to kill me and I feel anxious so it ruins the whole experience
But for some reason I’m too polite to decline the eye mask ....
I should probably get over that fear or just not go again 😂

Helloyouthere · 21/10/2020 14:32

I'm the exact same Smile. I try not to think about house stuff, kids, work etc and end up thinking about how longs left, I wonder how long I've had so far etc. I cant clear my mind

HerBigChance · 21/10/2020 14:33

I start off thinking about random life things then manage to settle.

Notsurewhatsgoingon · 21/10/2020 14:35

@Coralista Grin I always feel panic when they cover my eyes. I start imaging I'm in a horror film or similar.

Notsurewhatsgoingon · 21/10/2020 14:39

My husband is a trained masseuse and so I rearly go for a professional one. When he gives me one I'm usually thinking about an excuse for avoiding the happy ending Grin.
A professional one I'm usually thinking about not being awkward, such as is my breathing too loud, does she feel awkward too etc

Coralista · 21/10/2020 14:54

@Notsurewhatsgoingon I’m so glad it’s not just me !!!!

megletthesecond · 21/10/2020 14:58

Shopping lists, chores etc.

I only relax under a general anaesthetic.

Spidey66 · 21/10/2020 15:37

I hate them.

amusedbush · 21/10/2020 15:37

Trying not to fart, mostly. That or cringing when they touch my wobbly bits Grin

edwinbear · 21/10/2020 15:49

I usually end up falling asleep! Expensive nap they usually work out to be Grin

Destinysdaughter · 21/10/2020 15:53

I'm just focussing on how good/painful it feels and how great I'll feel afterwards! Though tbh I only have them for my bad back so for me they're more than a necessity than a luxury. A lot of masseurs play that relaxing plinky plonky music which I find helps me drift away. I had one last week and I felt like i had been in a trance!

FluffyPersian · 21/10/2020 15:58

I talk to the massage therapist the whole way through.

I HATE silence, it stresses me out. I find it anxiety provoking so always try and chat to the therapist. I've got wise to when they want to 'shut me down' so say 'Look, I relax better if I chat, is that OK with you? You really don't need to try your shutting down tactics.....' and 99% are cool. the 1% that don't want to talk to me - I don't push it, but I don't relax as much.

When I had 3 slipped discs in my back and chronic sciatica 4 years ago, I found a local massage therapist, after 1 hour we'd established we both liked murder documentaries and weird Channel 5 documentaries, had the same taste in food and doing weird things....by the end of the 3rd session, we arranged she'd come round to my house to watch weird documentaries I'd saved on my Sky box and 4 years later, not only do I still see her for massages, she came to my wedding and we're off to goat yoga this weekend..... Smile.

Flipping awesome massage friend!

SenorFrog · 21/10/2020 16:04

I generally don't like them but as a former professional sports person I've had hundreds, I always just fell asleep. More of a chore than a pleasure tbh.

orchidsonabudget · 21/10/2020 16:18

I have really good ideas. You have just reminded me I want to book one

orchidsonabudget · 21/10/2020 16:19

Oh senorfrog I am intrigued at your former life now

FromEden · 21/10/2020 16:38

I try to concentrate on my breathing and breathe "into" areas of tension and relax them when I exhale. It does work but its really hard to keep your mind from wandering. The rest of the time I just worry about the awkward silence because I hate making small talk.

Armi · 21/10/2020 16:44

I think about how my nose starts running the minute I lie on my front.

I don’t like them and don’t find them relaxing. I don’t really like to be touched by people I don’t know. DH has thankfully stopped buying me vouchers for them - I find a bottle of cava and a tube of Pringles much more relaxing.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/10/2020 16:45

I normally try and focus on what movements the masseur is doing so that I can try and replicate them at home a bit.

When they are doing my back I try not to fart.

Neron · 21/10/2020 16:45

I am a therapist myself, so when I'm having my own treatment I generally chat away to the therapist. We tend to discuss what's wrong with me, and how we are correcting it, or what needs to be worked on. We also discuss work (not clients), as not many people can relate

Palavah · 21/10/2020 16:48

Concentrate on your breathing.

When a thought enters your head you can notice it, ask if it matters before the end of the massage and then dismiss it.

Newbeginningsnow · 21/10/2020 16:55

I had my first one a couple of weeks ago and managed to switch off quite nicely but was constantly wondering how long it would last, it felt like it went on for ages. I obviously hadn’t thought to ask her!

My tummy was rumbling a bit Blush
