Following on from the SW thread I was wondering if i could hear about other good places to live in the UK?
I'm in Hampshire. Its a lovely place to live in many ways but very expensive.

London

Greatest city in the world. Very green, very peaceful (that's a plus and a minus) without the city workers and tourists. Incredible architecture, so many hidden parks and alleyways. Fantastic for cheap food and days out.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 21/10/2020 08:43

Easy commute into London, by the water, nice independent shops, restaurants etc, usually lots of things going on for families, good primaries, amazing grammars, plenty of employment opportunities, property in the nicest bits isn't cheap but much more affordable than London. I'm in Essex and as a whole county it's a very mixed bag with some areas of socioeconomic deprivation, but the bit I live in is very nice

Janevaljane · 21/10/2020 08:45

SW. Sorry didn't see the other thread.

Lived here for 25 years. For the first 10 years you had to look very hard to find any diversity or contemporary culture but things have improved on that front.

kitnkaboodle · 21/10/2020 08:46

Wiltshire - to be honest, a lot of it is to do with location: London, Wales, Cotswolds, Midlands, Devon, ferry ports all within 2 hours. Plus it's quite pretty Smile

JoJoSM2 · 21/10/2020 08:46

I’m in outer London and love that we can walk to the countryside but it’s still doable for DH by bike into his central London office. I love the culture London has to offer but it’s also only 15 mins to the hills and 1h to the beach.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 21/10/2020 08:52

I live in a Yorkshire dale in a pretty market town. Stunning countryside all around and wonderfully warm community. Can commute easily to big cities when need to for work, leisure. Beautiful Yorkshire accessible for a day out.

Yorkshire is amazing and I'm a Lancashire woman by birth so it takes a lot to say that!

HappyDinosaur · 21/10/2020 08:52

Forest of Dean, it is sort of SW but often forgotten about as it's over the bridge. I love it because I can cross the road and walk into the forest, the air feels clean and fresh, the people are friendly and the views are gorgeous. Even though it's fairly rural we are still well connected and can get to the motorways and larger towns and cities without much trouble.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 21/10/2020 08:53

That was meant to say *beautiful Yorkshire coast accessible

Emmapeeler2 · 21/10/2020 08:58

I have lived in the Somerset and Hampshire. They have a similar feel to me. Lots of outdoor places to go, countryside, but near to theatres, cinemas, airport etc. Same weather a few hours apart! But I have also lived in the north west and found it much friendlier.

Hellomoonstar · 21/10/2020 08:58

I love my neighbours. Dh is able to safely ride his bike to work. Everything used to be walking distance. The leisure centre, library, a busy friendly park and school. Two walking distance libraries have a lot of activities for children (not since Covid), this allowed me to meet other parents and form a sense of community.

Onedropbeat · 21/10/2020 08:59

I’m in Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire border

I love where I live because I can easily reach London for little trips or dinners out should we ever wish to

I love the countryside and we have amazing forests and hills and ancient protected land within easy reach in all directions

Mabelface · 21/10/2020 09:00

Top of high peak. Good transport links, thriving high street and right on the edge of the countryside. People are really friendly and I was glad to come back north.

SqidgeBum · 21/10/2020 09:01

Just outside the cotswolds in Gloucestershire. Great mix of urban shops, motorway access to the M5, and 10 mins from rolling hills and great rural walks. Houses arent too expensive. Low crime. Great days out for families.

Rowgtfc72 · 21/10/2020 09:04

I live I Cleethorpes on the east coast. We have a very high crime rate, poverty rate, in fact on paper we should be packing and moving!

We're 20 mins drive from the Lincolnshire Wolds. And as I learnt during lockdown you cant beat looking over the river humber with the sun rising across the water and the waves lapping on the sand.

Not everyones choice but I've learnt just how lucky we are to have the beach on our doorstep.

zoflo · 21/10/2020 09:05

Glasgow is my adopted home. It’s friendly, just the right size to walk everywhere, stunning architecture and keeps changing in a good way. We can drive for 30 minutes and be at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. A 40 minute drive and we are at a beach. It’s a perfect base for exploring the rest of Scotland. I couldn’t live anywhere else now.

mizz70 · 21/10/2020 09:07

Bearsden and milngavie a just outside glasgow city centre. Best shopping outside London in glasgow then few miles up the road loch lomond and the trossachs. Glen Coe mountains and exactly two hour drive

olderthanyouthink · 21/10/2020 09:08

London

Live on the edge of woods but can be in the major museums in 40 mins. It's very suburban so quite green and quiet but not devoid of shops and lots of activities (normally). Can cycle everywhere.

CMOTDibbler · 21/10/2020 09:09

I live in a very small market town in south Worcestershire. Low crime, reasonable house prices, easy to get into a number of places for more culture, great local food, beautiful countryside, thriving high street

MyDucksArentInARow · 21/10/2020 09:10

Ross on wye. Beautiful area, the river on the door step. Forests near by. Lovely town, amazing restaurants and cocktail bars in recent years. Good road links. Only thing it's lacking is public transport. The locals may complain of lack of things to do (cinema etc) but they're just unimaginative and not making the most of living in a small market town!

Fluffybutter · 21/10/2020 09:11

I’m in Hertfordshire, moved here from west London .
You can be in a bustling town and then a tiny village in under 5 minutes .
Lots of beautiful countryside.
Fantastic rail links, I can get into central London quicker from here than I could from west London on the tube . I can also go straight to Brighton or Edinburgh if I wanted without having to change trains .
Lots of places to explore /days out .
Some great shopping,pubs and restaurants.

Dmtush · 21/10/2020 09:12

Just outside Cambridge, I moved from the north east nearly 20 years ago as the lack of industry was killing the region. I love it here, the city is beautiful, there’s jobs, things to do and it’s very multicultural. I’ll also admit that having come from
an area of high crime and poverty I bloody love that I live in an affluent area where even the bad kids are alright. I’d never move back.

MayFayre · 21/10/2020 09:13

Rural East Midlands.

Beautiful countryside on our doorstep.
Very friendly people. Real sense of community.
Good transport networks (if we had anywhere to go!)
Fabulous local food - farm shops, bakeries etc.
Lot more house and garden for your money than the SE (we moved here for that reason)

MsEllany · 21/10/2020 09:14

I’m inner city Liverpool in a small terrace in a deprived area, but honestly I love it. Personally I’d like more space, but the actual area is great. Close to shops and schools with great public transport if needed, city centre in walking distance and a large park in sight. Our actual ‘neighbourhood’ is safe and friendly.
I’ve actually lived here now longer than I lived at ‘home’ which was Hertfordshire. I like being close to stuff, I’m a city girl at heart but it’s nice to know the wilds are not far away!

vanillandhoney · 21/10/2020 09:17

Cumbrian coast.

Numerous beaches within minutes but without the madness of the national park.
Great local support and everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming (I only moved here two years ago)
Easy access to the Lake Djstrict if you want it, but just as much beauty on your doorstep.
No loud traffic or pollution.
Excellent food and lots of great independent shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.

However it is quite isolated and there's very little in terms of chain shops or indoor amenities. For example it's 45 minutes to the nearest cinema, soft play, swimming pool or fast food restaurant.

steppemum · 21/10/2020 09:17

Swindon.
Now don't laugh!
I woudn't have chosen it, and yes the centre of town is shit ugly. But we have a good life here, and so wanted to come on and say enjoying where you live isn't only about the physical place. I love it because of good friends, easy access to family, quality of life is good.

But it does have lots more than people think:
We live quite close to town, but I can walk out of my house and do a 5-10 km walk in 4 different directions, which are not on pavements once I have left my street. This is because we have this amazing network of cycle and walking paths that thread through the city. Each of those walks end in a nature reserve/wooded area etc.
So many green spaces.
the town has lots going on.
2 theatres
ice skating
3 cinemas
bowling, laser quest, trampolining etc etc.
We have the whole of 3 beautiful counties on our doorstep for walks, pub lunches, pretty villages etc (Wilts, Glos, Oxfordshire, Cotswolds etc) But house prices here are relaly cheap.
