I have come to realise that when I see people not wearing masks, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as when I see people wearing masks, but doing so incorrectly. If they're not wearing it, there may be good reasons. They may just be making a stand. Whatever, at least it's a decision. But the half hearted, '"cover my mouth but not my nose" mask wearers send me into a rage and it's all I can do not to snap sarcastic comments at them...... There's a woman on the school run who insists on wearing a mask outside in a sort of "look at me" way but... it doesn't cover her nose so what is the bloody point!?

Argh. And breath. I'm fully aware that getting this wound up about this is not in any way productive, helpful or necessary. But stupidity of this sort offends me.

No. Vulnerable people should be staying in.
Aren't you lovely. So rather than being willing to make the small sacrifice of wearing a mask (unless genuinely exempt), socially distancing, practising cough hygiene and hand washing, in order to allow everyone, including vulnerable people, get on with things in a somewhat normal fashion, you just say fuck them, they should stay home as I can't be arsed.
swapsicles · 20/10/2020 21:09

I have to spend 8 to 10 hours a day continuously wearing a mask, it's hot, sweaty and uncomfortable but I do it to protect myself and everyone around me.
I have noticed theres a lot less nose hanger outers than before so the message is getting across slowly, it's more the ones that are so damn close to you without though that I have perfected my sly walk backwards to give myself room (I work in hospitality so cant be rude!)
Amongst staff the chefs and kps are the worst for mask wearing but in a hot kitchen I cant really blame them tbh, I just keep my distance

RattleOfBars · 20/10/2020 21:13

Do you know what it’s like wearing a mask ALL DAY?
Sometimes you have to pull it down to get some air.

Maybe the mask wearing mum is on her way to the train station and plans to pull it up after drop off? Or on the way to the shop and has mask half on so her hands are free to hold onto kids and their backpacks, book bags etc.

Maybe it slipped down and she didn’t realise or didn’t have a free hand to pull it up.

Maybe she’s asthmatic and feels wearing it over her mouth is better than not wearing it at all.

If you work in a hospital you’ll see staff in the empty offices or gardens with their mask half off.

I do school drop off with mask in my hand (nobody here wears them at the school gate) then put in on when I get to work. I’d be a bit shocked if someone told me off for holding it but not wearing it!

Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 21:13

Hapoy to social distamce, santise hands when going into shops etc but if i cant breath and need to pull my mask down below my nose when not near anyone then i will.

Zippy1510 · 20/10/2020 21:15

YANBU. I saw a post on Twitter recently where a lady said her husband won’t go to Tesco with her anymore as she sings “ put your nose in your mask you’re a dickhead” to the tune of “give me oil in my lamp keep me burning” from sing hosanna and now it’s stuck in my head every time I see some one walking around with a chin nappy.

StormzyInaDCup · 20/10/2020 21:59

@beaverdam100 I think it's you with the problem here. I'm vulnerable, but work full time. Should I let work down then and not go on? Just because you can't be bothered to get a mask that doesn't fog up your glasses?

Stay in or get contacts.... All vulnerable people should stay indoors, really! Can't even believe you had the gall to write that.

laidbacklife · 20/10/2020 22:10

Barely anyone is wearing them properly as that would entail medical grade masks and regularly changing them throughout the day.

IvorHughJarrs · 20/10/2020 22:17

@JovialNickname

I am one of these people. I wear the same disposable mask until it falls to pieces, don't store it properly and will wear it under my nose if I can get away with it. This is because I am not wearing a mask out of choice; I am wearing it because I am being forced to by our government. I am not able to make a stand and not wear one because I cannot afford to be fined (thanks to lockdown I am on benefits now, despite being a healthy able bodied person who wants to work). So in answer to your question people don't wear masks properly because they don't want to. Forcing the population to do something (especially something with negligible if any benefit) means there are a large proportion of peoplethat are unlikely to do it with good grace!
Total utter selfishness but then I'm sure you don't care what others think seeing as you clearly don't care if others die as a result of your idiocy
Shizzlestix · 20/10/2020 22:20

Proper idiots, I was burning to bollock them on the weekend, so many wearing it under the nose. I can’t be arsed getting into a row in supermarkets tho, so I just forged on, fuming.

OchonAgusOchonO · 20/10/2020 22:35

@laidbacklife - Barely anyone is wearing them properly as that would entail medical grade masks and regularly changing them throughout the day.

No, it wouldn't. Face coverings reduce the distance the virus travels so coupled with social distancing, reduce the spread of the virus.

dramtabby · 20/10/2020 22:37

YABU OP. I know some people who are eligible to go mask free but wear a mask over their mouth as a half measure. I also know some wearers of glasses who are blinded by fog whenever they walk into a shop on cold or wet days, so pulling the mask down slightly allows their glasses to clear.

Most people breath in through their nose and out through their mouth, so a mask over the mouth still provides protection. It protects during coughing too.

dolphinpose · 20/10/2020 22:40

I am asthmatic and find it so hard ti breathe with a mask on in lots of conditions: heated or stuffy places, when climbing stairs, on very long jor=urneys, So I tend to slip the mask down so I can breathe trhough my nose and only put it on again properly when I am interacting with other people. Breathing through your nose is less dangerous ot others - the air is filtered and less like to contain spit or to travel as far as when you are speaking or coughing etc. Not ideal but better than nothing.

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 20/10/2020 22:44

I've taken to saying to non-nose coverers 'oh your mask seems to have slipped under your nose - they're so annoying aren't they! The sooner this is all over the better!' in a very friendly way. Has worked so far as rhey have all then pulled it up and as a bonus, I have not been punched yet.

grenlei · 20/10/2020 22:44

OP, YANBU.

I loathe masks. They give me the rage, I can't wait to take mine off. Every time I have to wear it in a shop I feel sad. But if I have to wear it, I will wear it properly.

It grinds me gears seeing all these numpties with it on their chins, nose and sometimes mouth exposed. Went to a well known food vendor the other day and one of the idiots behind the counter had her nose exposed. Thankfully she wasn't serving my food.

I'm far more annoyed by the incorrect mask wearers than by the non wearers (who I generally assume or at least hope have a medical reason).

AdoreTheBeach · 20/10/2020 23:02

Yes. It really makes me so angry. Stupid bloody idiots. And the poster above who says she’s in benefits because of covid but doesn’t want to wear her mask. Well, perhaps they ought to think that if the virus doesn’t spread so much we would all be in a better position

Why not do this simple thing to help stop the spread.

We all can do our little bit to help. Some are just too thick.

I often want to say something but dint want to get yelled at. These people are so idiotic that you can’t tell what they’d do. They’re showing their lack of intelligence and selfishness.

Really do wish fines were handed out more to help stop the spread.

Also those who walk right past the hand sanitiser stations because they can’t be bothered.

I’m sure they’ll be the first ones who cry woe is me because they either catch it or are otherwise impacted by the restrictions being brought in because the numbers keep rising.

Freeekedout · 20/10/2020 23:07

I just want to print some of these and give them out 🤣

AIBU to say, "If you wear a mask, do it properly or don't bother"?
chasingmytail4 · 20/10/2020 23:43

Or as my sister said to me today, it gives about the same protection as wearing a condom on your balls!
Lou98 · 21/10/2020 00:03

This pandemic has really brought out the worst in some people when it comes to judging others.

You have no idea of other people's circumstances! That person wearing their mask below their nose could be struggling with any number of things from claustrophobia to anxiety and feeling like they can't breathe, but are trying to make the effort but perhaps having it below their noses are allowing them to calm down that little bit.

A lot of the people I see with it below their noses are glasses wearers who are having to choose between wearing a mask properly and not being able to see for their glasses steaming up or pulling it below their nose and doing both.

Yes, some of these people it will just be carelessness and there's no need for it, however, they're still making the effort and providing that bit of extra protection that wouldn't be there if they just didn't bother wearing one at all.

People are having to adapt to a new normal and are doing the best they can. Imagine thinking you have the right to judge strangers when you know nothing about them. Surely it should be a time we're sticking together instead of turning on each other!

And for what it's worth, yes I do wear a mask and wear it fully over my mouth and nose, but I don't have a reason not to, but equally don't assume that all people wearing it that way are idiots and definitely couldn't bring myself to get irritated enough about it for the constant threads.

Be kind to others and all that

AibuTellMe · 21/10/2020 00:32

YANBU. I assume it must be people with a low IQ or possible learning disability so they may not understand how to wear it.

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/10/2020 01:01

I would expect that if that were the case, they would do their best to keep a distance as they would be aware that they are not wearing the mask correctly (to be honest, I rarely notice others' masks unless they are close to me). However, many of those who don't wear the mask correctly, seem to also pay scant attention to distance. This definitely gives off a fuck you vibe.

Eh no they don't. Mouth for talking, nose for breathing.

Zippy1510 · 21/10/2020 07:37

YANBU. I’m a heavily pregnant, asthmatic glasses wearer and I wear my mask properly, as miserable as it makes me, because I am aware how utterly shit it would be if I got covid. I’m also aware that just because I’m exempt doesn’t mean I am immune and I don’t want to risk spreading it to someone more vulnerable than myself and killing them.

Reedwarbler · 21/10/2020 08:03

God there are some nasty judgy people on here. You know what op, the thing that really annoys me is yet another thread about masks. the replies are utterly predictable and become more unpleasant as the thread goes on. Just tiresome.

SurreyHillsGirl · 21/10/2020 08:24

You're hard Grin

SurreyHillsGirl · 21/10/2020 08:41

Maybe she’s asthmatic and feels wearing it over her mouth is better than not wearing it at all

I am asthmatic, I've been hospitalised with attacks. I really don't see why wearing a breathable mask will bring on an asthma attack! It's just another excuse. Wearing a mask does not reduce a person’s oxygen supply or cause a build-up of carbon dioxide. This is the reason that there is no blanket exemption for asthmatics, because people who suffer with asthma will not be affected by wearing a piece of BREATHABLE material over their mouths and nose.

Asthma is caused by triggers like dust mites or pollen, exercise, stress, pollution, chemicals. NOT WEARING A MASK!!

*Obviously if you are HAVING an asthma attack, wearing a mask would not be advisable! I'm talking about asthmatics who insist that they cannot wear a mask as it will induce an attack. NONSENSE.
