I have come to realise that when I see people not wearing masks, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as when I see people wearing masks, but doing so incorrectly. If they're not wearing it, there may be good reasons. They may just be making a stand. Whatever, at least it's a decision. But the half hearted, '"cover my mouth but not my nose" mask wearers send me into a rage and it's all I can do not to snap sarcastic comments at them...... There's a woman on the school run who insists on wearing a mask outside in a sort of "look at me" way but... it doesn't cover her nose so what is the bloody point!?

Argh. And breath. I'm fully aware that getting this wound up about this is not in any way productive, helpful or necessary. But stupidity of this sort offends me.

That'll be me then. I will pull my mask down under my nose when I'm not close to people. Because of how they sit on my face when covering my nose it affects my vision which in turn makes my brain short circuit.

Hidden disabilities an' all that.

SpaceOP · 20/10/2020 12:42

@JovialNickname

I am one of these people. I wear the same disposable mask until it falls to pieces, don't store it properly and will wear it under my nose if I can get away with it. This is because I am not wearing a mask out of choice; I am wearing it because I am being forced to by our government. I am not able to make a stand and not wear one because I cannot afford to be fined (thanks to lockdown I am on benefits now, despite being a healthy able bodied person who wants to work). So in answer to your question people don't wear masks properly because they don't want to. Forcing the population to do something (especially something with negligible if any benefit) means there are a large proportion of peoplethat are unlikely to do it with good grace!
I think you're making a basic mistake here - as I understand it, if you're not wearing a mask you can't be fined as no one is allowed to ask if your'e not wearing one because of a disability or because you just don't want to. But by definition, if you're wearing one, it suggests you don't have a disability and therefore SHOULD be wearing it correctly.

So not only are you being ridiculous and passive aggressive - unattractive at the best of times - you're also being a bit silly and are far more likely to land up with a fine than if you just didn't wear one. Which kind of proves my point about people who wear them half heartedly.

Because people are stupid. No other reason.

user1495884620 · 20/10/2020 13:04

I don't get the anger towards wearing under the nose. Masks protect from droplets produced by talking, coughing and sneezing. Only sneezing causes nasal droplets so unless someone is actively sneezing, there is no benefit to covering the nose.

This is exactly the attitude I assume most people wearing masks with their noses exposed have.

It's a fuck you attitude and shows they don't give a shit about others. There is plenty of research to show the efficacy of masks when worn correctly and coupled with other measures, such as hand hygiene and social distancing.

@JovialNickname you are quite rightly getting a lot of stick on here. My husband has cancer and heart failure, and for that reason, we stay in the house away from other people as much as we can. The one time I do have to go out in public is to collect medication from the pharmacy, and I get very worried when I come across people like you whilst I'm out. If my husband got covid it would in all likelihood kill him. Even if only I got it, I have diabetes, so could be badly affected, and then I don't know what would happen to my husband, for whom I'm carer.
Your utter selfishness -and lack of intelligence- absolutely makes my blood boil.

My masks usually ride up so they’re obscuring my nose and eyes! I'm the blind fool banging into people at the supermarket. You’d really hate me.

Lol, I'm glad it's not just me! I'm so fed up of my mask tickling my eyelashes! My glasses help hold it in place but then I have the battle of whether I've got the nosewire right to stop me steaming up and being blinded anyway!

There are enough different types of masks around that you should be able to find one that fits with a bit of adjustment.
IMNOTSHOUTING · 20/10/2020 13:42

People who don't wear a mask at all also give me the rage but if it's a stranger I wouldn't judge as they may not be able to wear one. The half wearing mask people obviously can wear it probably but don't. It's irritating as hell!

That you know of. It's amazing how quickly covid went from being not airborne to airborne to an extent. At the start of this you also couldn't catch it from someone unless they were showing symptoms, that's also now proven false. Either it's changing very quickly or they don't actually know as much as they are telling you.

Droplets can also come out of the nose. It's not clear to me why if your'e covering up, you wouldn't do it properly.

YABU to post this outside the Coronavirus topic.

Samcro · 20/10/2020 14:48

well this thread proves that some people just don't give a shit about others.
even in the supermarket today they had to help the hard of thinking, but saying masks had to be worn over the mouth and nose.

Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 20:42

Atleast they are trying. Its very difficult to breath plus those who wear glasses can hardly see sometimes due to the glass steaming. Mind your own business and dont go by them if you dont like it.

Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 20:44

Mask police are off.

No, they're not trying. There are plenty of masks that work with glasses. And it's just a question of getting used to breathing through them unless you have lung issues, in which case you are exempt.

It is everybody's business. The reason the situation is getting worse is because of people either ignoring, or making half-arsed pretences at following, the rules.

StormzyInaDCup · 20/10/2020 20:50

I may be wrong here, but I'm exempt from wearing a mask. I get so fed up of people being rude / confrontational when I don't wear one, that I try to wear one for as long as I can manage.

This usually ends up in my taking it off or having it in some variation of covering at times. It irks me that people think it's their right to say something about it. I have an exemption card, I'll happily show security but not some gobshite who wants to come into my personal space to confront me about at least trying to wear one!

You can't win!

Rshard · 20/10/2020 20:51

I was confronted by a woman outside the butchers there other day. She did not have a mask on, she was wearing one of those lanyards so fair enough. What I did object to is when I asked her very politely to give me enough space to exit the shop and maintain social distance from her she had a go at me. I don’t care about why she’s not wearing a mask but I don’t want to get close to her.

Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 20:52

It is difficult to breath. Just because you don't have an issue with it does not mean everyine has the same experience.

Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 20:54

The mask wearing is over the top. Those whi are fussy should stay inside and leave us get on with our lives.

How about those who don't give a shit about trying to protect others stay inside instead?
Beaverdam100 · 20/10/2020 21:02

No. Vulnerable people should be staying in.

forgetthehousework · 20/10/2020 21:02

YANBU OP. I have noticed a tendency in many 'half-maskers' to stand much too close as well, but I suppose it follows logically that if you can't be bothered to wear the mask properly you're unlikely to care enough to stand a reasonable distance away.
