To think this is too far to travel for a day trip?

Due to Covid DH’s family who live 4-5 hours away want to meet up but we’re trying to arrange to meet in the middle somewhere. They’ve found a national trust place that’s 2 hours 20 mins away. DH thinks that’s reasonable for a day and obviously we’d be returning the same distance later on. So over 4 hours of driving altogether.
I’m not sure what the alternative is at present except to not see them, but it feels like a lot of driving for one day. Thoughts?

It's not ideal but we've done similar a few times this year to see PILs. It's OK and just needs to be done at the moment.

Oh and we have a 2 year old.

You're being ridiculously precious. So what if you have a two year old? Children the world over manage to be in cars.

It's really not a big deal. It's not any sort of deal.

Really? I've travelled abroad for a day trip. Depends on your outlook I suppose

Would you share the driving with your partner? If so, an hour each way, for each of you is reasonable.

However, if I was doing that drive on my own, it would be at the upper limit of what I'd want to do... For me, it would also depend on the roads. If it's motorways, where you can kind of "switch off" a bit, then that's not so bad. But if it's hours of winding through towns and stopping and starting, then that's hard work.

We’ve done it a few times so my son can have a day out with Grandma. The only negative for us is the long sleep he has in the car means he sleeps poorly that night.

I think it's fine

Driving with a 2 year old is tough. Time driving with naps if you can, otherwise pack lots of activities and one of you sit in the back with them.
