"I can't have the app- I am nhs"

Heard someone saying this yesterday in a pub to the waitress. She asked if he had scanned his track and trace app and he said "I can't have the app, I work for the nhs in a hospital so it would be going off all the time". AIBU to think this is BS?! Surely if you work somewhere you could be exposed or expose others regularly that's all the more reason to have it?? Or am I missing something

I don't see the issue with just leaving details manually. Zero obligation to have the app as mentioned above, and there should be no 'app shaming'.

ProudAuntie76 · 18/10/2020 12:51

How will it effect your family members

Because if you live in the same house they have to isolate too.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 18/10/2020 12:52

My NHS trust has said to download it if we want, but remember to disable contact tracing while at work, as we should be wearing PPE at all times or socially distancing if eating/drinking etc. So in theory we should never be within 2m of someone with no PPE for 15 minutes or more.

I downloaded the app but it seems a bit useless so far: had a "phantom" notification about being in contact with someone with covid, which then disappeared. Googled it and it's been quite common apparently. It was also saying my area was both "medium" and "high" risk the other day Hmm.

Teacher friends have been told not to download it, as well as a friend who works in an office.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 18/10/2020 12:53

Also a teacher who has been told by trust CEO to not have it active when on school property, not that I tend to have my phone around me when around kids anyway. Friends in NHS have also been told the same, although for hte entire shift, not when just in full PPE.

ProudAuntie76 · 18/10/2020 12:55

@YeOldeTrout

I didn't know they were allowed to have phone on them during work. What pocket do they keep that in?
Doesn’t have to be a pocket. Can be locked drawer in an office, lockers in change rooms etc.

I leave my work phone in my locker, and my work phone goes in my scrub pocket, in a little clear bag so I don't wreck the screen by cleaning it 50 times a day.

@SchrodingersUnicorn

Teachers can't have it either - and we don't have PPE! But apparently no need for us to isolate if we spend 2 hours in a double lesson with an infected sixth former in the front row (1.5m away for me). Because covid doesn't spread in schools you know... or rather, they don't want them to close because there's not enough teachers. If the sixth former and I both had the app, I'd have to isolate.
My school has encouraged all to download it plus sixth form so I think yours is a local rule.

Family member is NHS.

First they were told that if they did download it, to turn it off when they are doing visits (due to wearing PPE).

Then they realised the staff were forgetting to turn it off so have told all staff to delete it from their phones.

BlusteryShowers · 18/10/2020 13:01

I'm a teacher and we haven't been told not to have it.

My husband is police and they were told not to at first but they're allowed now.

rorosemary · 18/10/2020 13:01

It doesn't matter. If they don't want the app then it's fine not to have it since it isn't obligatory in the UK. I wouldn't download it because otherwise I'd have to wear a tinfoil hat the whole time which messes up my hairstyle. Which is just as good a reason as any and doesn't need clarification or justification (just kidding about the tinfoil hat, I'm in a different country and our app is full of security holes so just won't download it).

No they don’t.
jessstan1 · 18/10/2020 13:01

I didn't realise 'the app' was mandatory. I only have an old fashioned phone and have never had an app of any description, neither wanted one.

We've been explicitly told to turn it off before we enter the building in our trust. Id forget, so I didn't download it.
ivykaty44 · 18/10/2020 13:02

you have to be with a person who has a positive result for more than 15 minutes at less than 2 meters for the app to activate

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 18/10/2020 13:03

The app isn’t mandatory, so there should be an alternative way of recording track and trace information. Not everyone has a smart phone.

mena51 · 18/10/2020 13:05

I don't think it's feasible for NHS workers as it would just make everyone go off work. I have colleagues who have had to self isolate for 2 weeks just because they've been 'in close contact' with someone according to the app. But they have tested negative and have been asymptomatic. In theory that is absolutely the right thing to do, but if every medic does that we would have major staffing issues immediately and constantly.

Scarby9 · 18/10/2020 13:06

When I run face to face training or meetings all participants are minimum 2m apart BUT I now have to remind them constantly about their phones.
It is natural to sit town at a table and put your phone down in front of you and to the side. Person 1 puts it at a comfortable distance to their right; Person 2 puts it at a comfortable distance to their left - the phones are less the 1.5m apart for up to 6 hours. The fact that everyone is 2m+ apart, all windows and doors are open and no itels are shared and sometimes masks are also worn in the session just can't be picked up by the App. Less than 2m for 15mins and you could be contacted as a close contact. We have to keep reminding people to keep their phone on their person.

We also have a room with screens between desks - the people are physically separated but the App doesn't know that.

It's not.

A manual way to T&T needs to also be available.

No they don’t, only the person in contact isolates.

Your household isolates if you have symptoms or a positive test.

FinallyHere · 18/10/2020 13:13

We also have a room with screens between desks - the people are physically separated but the App doesn't know that.

We have this same scenario in the labs at work. Perspex waterproof screens between the stations but the app doesn't know about that.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/10/2020 13:13

I don't have it but then government has seen that I don't fucking go anywhere so there is no point.

Not that there is any fucking point anyway, but that's another story.

Onetwothree456 · 18/10/2020 13:15

I house share with two nurses (who work at different places) who have both been told not to have the app. Does seem a bit daft. I'd like to know if I'm at risk too.

BessieSurtees · 18/10/2020 13:17

Its not fit for purpose and no one needs an excuse not to download it.

ShipOfTheseus · 18/10/2020 13:19

It doesn’t seem to work well. Mine says I’m in a medium risk area, even though I’m now in a high risk area. It didn’t even recognise when I travelled 100 miles away last week. Bluetooth and contact tracing are switched on.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 18/10/2020 13:21

Why do you need to app to be able to scan QR codes for track and trace in coffee shops etc?

You just need a QR reader, scan it and fill on your details. It's not using the app. Its track and trace and you'll be notified if track and trace identify a positive case was in the shop at the same time as you.
