AIBU to be freaked out by delivery drivers doing this

Been ordering stuff online for years...various companies....no major issues. During COVID generally deliveries fine...knock, wait, socially distanced handover...cheery banter about weather etc.
In last 4 weeks though on 3 occasions with 3 different drivers from 2 companies....
First thing heard is door being opened..parcel put into hall..door slammed shut. No knock, no bell...
On second occasion I called out to driver to say why didn’t you knock and wait..why did you let yourself into my house...his answer..it’s a porch ( it isn’t) ...you should lock your door ( hubby had gone out into garage so door wasn’t locked)...he was rude and patronising that I was not happy that he simply let himself in.
On 3rd occasion the door was locked. The driver was trying the door handle numerous times...eventually he banged on door really hard repeatedly and seemed very impatient when I opened it,

I have never experienced this in all these years- then 3 times in as many weeks.

AIBU to think delievrry drivers should not let themselves into your home unless there is explicitly a notice to say leave in porch etc ( if you have one)...is anyone else experiencing this weird new behaviour..is it a new thing? AIBU to say it is scary and weird to have random strangers trying to get into your house

I dunno. We've had that happen a number of times and it's never really bothered me. We live in a small place and a lot of people leave their front doors open anyway so you can see inside to the porch door.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/10/2020 10:43

Also I think drivers are probably under a lot of pressure to get a certain amount of deliveries done so they aim to get it done as quickly as possible.

I guess if you can save one minute per delivery doing that, it really adds up?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 17/10/2020 10:45

I think it’s unacceptable. We keep our door locked.

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 10:45

We don’t have a porch though...the front door goes straight into what is obviously a hall...it doesn’t even look like a porch..not clear why the guy said it was a porch...not even he thought it was a porch😂

I have a lock on our porch door and leave front door unlocked. Means parcels can be left and it stops anyone coming into house.

calzone2018 · 17/10/2020 10:48

We have a delivery driver that does this too and it drives me wild! It's annoying when they don't even give you 30 seconds before trying the door, it's terrifying when you don't expect someone and the door flies open! I know there's always the option of locking the door but I feel like it's my house, I should be able to have the doors unlocked if I want and not have someone walking in. I've taped a big sign to the door saying don't come in and it has stopped them, it doesn't look very pretty but it does make me feel a bit better. Maybe try that if they keep persisting?

Lazysundayafternoons · 17/10/2020 10:49

I havent experienced this but agree with PP that it's probably down to the delivery drivers being under more pressure than normal.

If my delivery drivers can see that I am at home but not there to open the door, they just leave it outside the door for me.

SimplyPizza · 17/10/2020 10:51

YABVU. If you don’t like it, go out and do your own shopping. Complaining that someone left a delivery in the hall, then complaining that a delivery wasn’t left because the door was locked, what would you be happy with? They haven’t got time to wait around for people shuffling around their house waiting for them to find keys to let them in.

MiddleClassMother · 17/10/2020 10:54

YABU. At my house you can't do this because we have security gates which are closed, but on the rare occasion they're open (power failure) they have tucked it in our porch. It's not like he wondered into your house, he simply put the package down...

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 10:56

Simply pizza - I didn’t complain that someone did leave a delivery as the door was locked- they did deliver. And I don’t shuffle..🤣😂🤣

No I wouldn't like it, especially where he was rude.
I've had them absolutely hammer on my front door, I was sitting by the window next to it so was already at the door ready to open it, I actually said to him please don't smack on the glass like that if you break it you will pay for it, he then said I didn't open the door quick enough and he threw the parcel at me. He was reported to Amazon and I've not seen him since.
I had one though who was clearly not happy to be our during lockdown, he knocked and I opened, he had already put the parcel down before knocking, when I opened the door he put his hand out (from a good 2 metres back) and said "keep back! Keep your distance". I just looked at him, said he was being ridiculous, he was well away by the gate and I was picking the parcel up and acknowledging him as per Amazon instructions.

Mum2threejs · 17/10/2020 10:58

Our local delivery drivers drive me nuts, they don’t let themselves in though. Ours just leave them in random places in the garden, no knock no card saying where they’ve left it. Don’t know they’ve been most of the time til I get the email saying it’s been delivered usually a few hours later.
Lock the door. If the delivery driver let’s himself in other people won’t hesitate too as well....

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 11:00

He did wander into my house..no porch...he had to open the door, walk actually into the house and place behind door- there wasn’t room to leave it anywhere else

Mischance · 17/10/2020 11:01

I don't think they get much of a time window for each delivery. I always think it is very dangerous as it encourages them to drive fast between drop-offs.

I get a bit irritated when I go into my porch and find a note telling me that they have failed to deliver - when I was in and all they had to do was ring the bell and WAIT!!! I live in a sprawly bungalow and cannot get to the door instantly.

showgirlie · 17/10/2020 11:04

I don't think it's acceptable at all, i mean i would quite happily walk around my house in underwear or pjs and not expect someone to just open my door, if your door is open it means you're in and if you're in they should wait, surely that's just part of the job. No one should be opening your door with out permission

AlwaysLatte · 17/10/2020 11:06

That's totally not on!

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 11:08

Exactly showgirlie😂🤣🤣

As someone who suffered DV from anxiety who broke into my home and was just there when I turned around, that would freak me out. And I'm over it, but that would panic me.

AibuTellMe · 17/10/2020 11:12

An ex not anxiety. Though I have that 😂

Nottherealslimshady · 17/10/2020 11:12

Never had this issue. They'd have a bloody shock opening our door with our rottie sleeping behind it! What a stupid thing to do. Your door should be locked though. Unless we're in sight of the door outside, say putting the bins out, its locked.

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 11:15

Not the real slim shady...maybe I could borrow a dog..never thought about that😉

OP posts:
Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 17/10/2020 11:18

Lock your bloody door! It could be anyone getting in. Ridiculous.

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 11:18

Yep, we do normally lock door...DH has habit of popping to garage and leaving door unlocked ( he does lift handle to secure it though). He’s been a bit more diligent since it happened...but taking keys and locking door behind you when you go out to garage is a pain

OP posts:
Twigletfairy · 17/10/2020 11:18

It's not a new thing, and I do prefer it as deliveries tend to turn up when children are taking a nap. So it means they don't get woken up. Handy if I'm out too, I can lock the inner door and leave the front door unlocked.

I wouldn't be happy if I didn't have a porch though. My dog would probably do a runner out the door if I was out

magicstar1 · 17/10/2020 11:18

They seem to be trying not to have to interact with customers because of Covid. I was sitting on my sofa and a hand reached through the front window and dropped a package for me...gave me such a fright!
All the other couriers seem to be ringing the bell and leaving the parcels on the step.
