AIBU to be freaked out by delivery drivers doing this

Been ordering stuff online for years...various companies....no major issues. During COVID generally deliveries fine...knock, wait, socially distanced handover...cheery banter about weather etc.
In last 4 weeks though on 3 occasions with 3 different drivers from 2 companies....
First thing heard is door being opened..parcel put into hall..door slammed shut. No knock, no bell...
On second occasion I called out to driver to say why didn’t you knock and wait..why did you let yourself into my house...his answer..it’s a porch ( it isn’t) ...you should lock your door ( hubby had gone out into garage so door wasn’t locked)...he was rude and patronising that I was not happy that he simply let himself in.
On 3rd occasion the door was locked. The driver was trying the door handle numerous times...eventually he banged on door really hard repeatedly and seemed very impatient when I opened it,

I have never experienced this in all these years- then 3 times in as many weeks.

AIBU to think delievrry drivers should not let themselves into your home unless there is explicitly a notice to say leave in porch etc ( if you have one)...is anyone else experiencing this weird new behaviour..is it a new thing? AIBU to say it is scary and weird to have random strangers trying to get into your house

Yes, we are now locking door in all circumstances- the last guy was trying to open it when locked...and that was still freaking me...he didn’t ring bell until he couldn’t open door....bonkers

If my front door is closed it can only be opened from outside with a key. There is no way of having it closed and accessible without a key. I’ve had four front doors on this house and all of them have worked this way. I thought that was normal but it seems a lot of people have houses that anyone can just walk into.....

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 12:40

All those saying delivery drivers have hard time...absolutely...they are here a lot, I think they (and any of you who are) are dong a great job and I don’t know how most of us would’ve functioned without you....and zero hours type contracts are s&*£

🥳🥳🥳

But, to a tiny minority, please don’t enter our houses without a note to say so as it makes me freak out

That would freak me out too! Fortunately, we've never had a driver do this, and we get deliveries 4 or 5 times a week.

ZigZagToTheBeach · 17/10/2020 12:44

I don't think it really matters whether it's unreasonable of you to be annoyed by this or not (I would be annoyed too). What matters is that you have expressed your annoyance and shock to the delivery driver and they have not been remorseful or suggested they may not do it next time!

NeonGenesis · 17/10/2020 12:44

I think as a PP has said, delivery drivers are probably under a huge amount of pressure at the moment. Not only are they going to have much more stuff to get through, but the rules about what they must or must not do keep changing, not to mention I would think a lot of their supervisors will see them as easily replaceable, at a time when competition for jobs is fierce.

I'm not at all excusing it. People should do their jobs properly, regardless. But I would imagine this is why you're seeing changes in behaviour. They are probably desperate to get through everything as fast as possible whilst ticking relevant boxes.

nosswith · 17/10/2020 12:45

Complain to the company. Make it clear that you expect drivers to be instructed not to do this under any circumstances.

RedComb · 17/10/2020 12:47

@Chickentraybake

I have a lock on our porch door and leave front door unlocked. Means parcels can be left and it stops anyone coming into house.
You've got this the wrong way round Grin but I see what you mean!
Shoppingwithmother · 17/10/2020 12:49

I don’t think he should have come in. I also don’t think your front door should be unlocked so anyone could come in.

Sunnyoctday · 17/10/2020 12:51

Ok, I have had a lightbulb moment...perhaps I’ve just been stupid to not clock this before...🤔🙄

All the talk of door handles....maybe that’s why they think it’s a porch and try to get in?😮😮

Maybe I need a big sign saying “ I know we’ve got a handle on the outside so you might think it’s a porch, but it isn’t”

What do you think?

MushMonster · 17/10/2020 12:56

You should always lock your doors. I grew up in a village where everyone's doors were open morning till dinner time. The houses are quite sparse too, so you do not really can see your neighbours house. This was noticed by thugs at some point. I always close my door and nobody can open it from outside without a key.

"Maybe I need a big sign saying “ I know we’ve got a handle on the outside so you might think it’s a porch, but it isn’t”

Or you could... and just hear me out, I know what I'm about to suggest is lunacy but it might just be crazy enough to work... you COULD... lock the fucking door???

Just hear me out.....And you could read what I have written in previous comments about when the door is not locked and what we’re doing now?

Just lock the door? No one can open the door to my house with out a key.

popsydoodle4444 · 17/10/2020 13:03

One of my work colleagues had an incident earlier this week;she putting washing out in the garden when her husband arrived home:so she went inside and he asked her why was there packages left on the living room floor.

Her local myhermes courier had opened her front door, walked through the little hallway and put the parcels in her living room. What's even more concerning is that her baby was asleep in the living room at the time.

MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee · 17/10/2020 13:04

You don't have a courier problem, you have a DH problem.

BLASTPROCESSING · 17/10/2020 13:04

What, that you/your husband can't be bothered taking a set of keys to lock/unlock when needed? Those comments?

And please don’t shout and swear at me...this is supposed to be a little bit lighthearted and you’re spoiling the fun

It’s a bit annoying....I’ve noticed that the drivers have been rushing more and not leaving cards so I don’t know where my parcels are.

However, they probably don’t even get the minimum wage if they spend more than 10 seconds at your door. Also, I think it’s a privilege to be able to have things delivered so easily and I would not want to act in an entitled way when I have such convenience. It’s great that you have a porch so that you can have your parcels delivered safely. Therefore, YABU. Sorry!

This again. Of course it did not happen.

LeroyJenkinssss · 17/10/2020 13:12

Oh our delivery guys just open and pop it into the porch (it is very obviously a porch) and I appreciate that.

Today however had one today delivering appliance ring me on my mobile stood outside my front door rather than press the doorbell. I mean surely it would have been easier??

🙄I don’t have a porch...that’s the point And please don’t start the old tiresome “entitlement” banter....I have a teeny tiny hallway and a small house..and have already posted that delivery drivers have a hard job to do . And I’m old enough to know and be very grateful for today’s on line services and delivery compared to having to go out shopping and carrying everything on public transport.

Bluebellbike · 17/10/2020 13:19

I keep my front door locked. Delivery people ring bell or knock. Most place the item on the outside mat, ring or knock then step away, take a photo of the front door open with parcel there. What really annoys me is if I'm out and get an email or text saying "your parcel has been delivered, item handed to resident", (it wasn't) or "put through letterbox", (no chance it would fit). Then I know it is somewhere around, may have been stolen, etc. Often I get home and fi d a valuable item sitting outside my front door in full view of the street, maybe getting soaked wet through. Or fragile items chucked over the high side gate.

Danni91 · 17/10/2020 13:21

Does your house set up from the outside look like it could be a porch?

Have you double checked your instructions for 'leave parcel ... if im not in' most places have in porch as a clickable option and you may have pressed it on a recent order.

I've a specific amazon guy and i always know when hes been because if i aint in most leave it on my doorstep but this 1 particular guy puts his hand over the back gate to undo the lock walks through garden to leave it somewhere in the back (usually back door step)

I love it and i think its thoughtful but the bastard never relocks it when he leaves and we have lots of expensive stuff in the garden/shed.

Ive never moaned to him though i'm always just happy i dont have to wait another day or visit a neighbour to pick it up!

Also no front door handle here, only out the back door.
