AIBU or is Mumsnet particularly hysterical?

In the last twenty minutes I've read threads on societal collapse, civil unrest, war all breaking out in the next year. I've seen people hysterically telling an OP to leave a husband or slept in accidentally, and others encouraging people to panic buy for Brexit while disputing the fact that what they are encouraging is in fact panic buying.

Is Mumsnet generally a good representation of people's views in your circles do you find? Or do people post their true feelings here, ones they wouldn't speak out loud do you think? IE anxieties about things like civil unrest?

I'm just curious really as to whether people read threads on mumsnet and feel that they're a bit OTT and scare mongering or whether they think they're a good representation of the general vibe in their area or circle?

OP posts:

Isn't hyperbolic different though?🤔 I didn't think it could be used like that

Hyoerbolic to mean means a curve generated by y = k/x, if the meaning is refering to language then I think hyperbole is the word.

mumsnet to me is like another universe

I joined for the Adoption board and rarely post elsewhere unless something catches my eye. Although being an elderly ( ie over 50 ) single mum at the weekends I do browse for the entertainment.
Once the theatres open again I’ll be gone.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 16/10/2020 21:38

It's the adjective.

Pippin2028 · 16/10/2020 21:38

If you believe everything you read on here or other social media's, its time to get real. Part of it is that we do spend alot of time on social platforms and its easy to get sucked in and believe everything you read and people start panicking. People said in 2016 at the Brexit vote that we will have civil war, trump will destroy the planet, and so on. At the moment we are in something no one has experienced in their lifetime and I do think things will be tough until next year, but as with everything life continues l, the world spins and we adapt. Too much scaremongering on social platforms right now

ApplestheHare · 16/10/2020 21:39

I don't find people to be like mumsnetters IRL. But mumsnetters must have real lives. I think users of the site express anxieties here that they wouldn't in person. It's somewhere people often seem to come when they're upset, and I think it's a bit of a vicious circle in terms of anxiety. I try to avoid posts that stem from anxiety and gravitate towards practical posts.

Hellothere19999 · 16/10/2020 21:40

Silvercatowner · 16/10/2020 21:40

Good grief yes. Covid is a wet dream for lots of posters.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 16/10/2020 21:40

I rejoined after lockdown.

I really need a better "hobby" and theatre would be lovely.

Maireas · 16/10/2020 21:40

The Boris one. Every single loo brush one.
One about a woman asked to make cups of tea at work (the horror).

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 16/10/2020 21:42

Oh god, the making tea.

Ted27 · 16/10/2020 21:42

@Pippin2028

I do think Trump is very dangerous though. Its a good thing they are limited to 2 terms

Redolent · 16/10/2020 21:42

Don’t forget the ones who keep forewarning of “civil unrest” while being the least likely to participate in any such activity.
seayork2020 · 16/10/2020 21:43

I call them fishing threads (as in the fish size gets bigger every time the story is told)

To borrow a bit of a pp's post

Dh is 10 mins late
Maybe he is late from work?
Dont be silly he is controlling the op by making her worry
He is having an affair
Can one of your friends follow him
You need to pay a private investigator
You have to call the police he is dealing drugs
He works for MI6

oh turns out his shoe lace broke

No he is lying to get out now! take the kids!!!

DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 21:43

I wonder how engineers will replace "hysteresis" ?

MiddleClassMother · 16/10/2020 21:43

There's a lot of hysterical posters on MN. I'm probably one of them, it's a place you can share all your concerns etc. For what it's worth i've described men as hysterical before, I don't see it as misogynistic.

VinylDetective · 16/10/2020 21:43

@TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun

Oh god, the making tea.
Was it good? I avoided it like the plague, I could see where it was heading without even opening it.
Theworldisfullofgs · 16/10/2020 21:45

I think most mumsnetters have their heads in the sand

RationalOne · 16/10/2020 21:45

It's mad
catastrophising
over the top
pearl clutching
stock up the G&T
over dramatic
end of world scenarios
and
mostly completely ridiculous

I have no friends in RL who are remotely like some of the people on here - I feel it is a parallel universe

For now...

XingMing · 16/10/2020 21:47

FFS stop worrying about the linguistics and focus on the things that matter! Have you got a store of essentials put by in case you can't easily get out?

A new bottle of Calpol? Your prescription? Some loo roll (I don't mean nine month's supply). Pasta? Rice? Spuds? Nappies? Detergent?

Congratulations, you've got it sorted out. If we're locked down, play board games and talk to your children. That was how people got through the 1970s.

Silvercatowner · 16/10/2020 21:47

Me neither. Mumsnet for me is often a weird mix of The Archers, Blackadder and Tom and Jerry.

ChickensMightFly · 16/10/2020 21:49

Generally I find that it is one of the more sane corners of the internet. I'll take Mumsnet over Twitter for people being rational. I have had quite a few decent conversations on here, don't think I can say that about many other general forums, though I use a builders one which is pretty straight down the line but the topics aren't so varied and there is no classics. Grin

Maireas · 16/10/2020 21:49

Tea making horrors. Woman takes temporary office assistant job. Part of the duties is to make cups of tea. This is apparently skivvy work and demeaning. The worst was all the posters encouraging the sabotaging of said tea by making it so vile that she would never be asked again.
