My labour was 24 hours from first contraction to birth. I think I’ve forgotten some because, to be honest, it was quite boring. I went into labour at 2pm and it was fairly manageable until about 2am, but I was tired and wanted sleep and couldn’t distract myself. Then I starting struggling and that all kind of blurs into one until the midwives arrived at about 9am (home birth). Since it was dragging on, and pretty repetitive I think I’ve forgotten a lot of the details.
One thing I do vividly remember is the feeling of tearing (tmi but I remember feeling a distinct “rip” and thinking, fuck, that felt like something bad happened). Wish I could forget that - it still makes me want to wince and cross my legs.

Monkeytapper · 16/10/2020 21:29

I don’t remember it now, but I wrote down my birth stories for both kids not long after having them whilst it was fresh in my mind,,printed them out and they are in their memory boxes collecting dust in the loft for the past 10 and 12 years.

Candycats · 16/10/2020 21:30

I'm the same as a PP, there's a big chunk of time missing between 4-8cm! I can remember flashes but not much. I only had gas and air. I can remember the bloody emergency forceps like it was yesterday though 😬

Cattenberg · 16/10/2020 21:31

No. By the time I was taken to theatre for an EMCS, I’d missed nearly two whole nights of sleep and kept nodding off. When DD was born, she was held up above the curtain and I somehow missed seeing her. I’m really glad the anaesthetist’s assistant took lots of photos for me.

addictedtotheflats · 16/10/2020 21:33

I remember all 27 hours of mine, from that first niggle to getting stitched up in theatre

Giningit · 16/10/2020 21:33

I remember both births like it was yesterday!

RedDiamond · 16/10/2020 21:34

I do remember with the first wanting to poo! I was so embarrassed. The Midwife kindly let me know that it was the instinct to push.

FuzzyPuffling · 16/10/2020 21:34

I remember every moment of all three of mine, but I didn't have any drugs, so perhaps that's why? No trauma either..all was well.

Whatisthisfuckery · 16/10/2020 21:34

I didn’t have anything for pain and I remember most of it. there’s a few bits where i was overtaken by the pain but I remember the bits between the contractions. My Labour started off really slow for 24 hours then went really quick though, so the really bad bits didn’t last long enough for me to totally lose my shit.

SkittyKat · 16/10/2020 21:35

Nope. I had pethadine with my first and lost a whole 24 hours. No memory at all. I was with it (vaguely) for his birth but was out of it for hours afterwards as well. I was adamant with my second that I wouldn’t have pethadine again (and I didn’t, I just had gas and air) and I can remember a lot more of that one.

Emmapeeler2 · 16/10/2020 21:36

I remember everything quite clearly. The years afterwards though would be a blank without photos.

ComDummings · 16/10/2020 21:37

Yes. Every minute. Induction on the drip no
dilation, constant contractions followed by EMCS. Trauma means you can forget things but mine worked differently, I remember it vividly and still get flashbacks. I remember all of being in the postnatal ward which was honestly as bad as the birth. I had no drugs before the EMCS, just gas and air which I didn’t like. Then it was a spinal. I really really wish I could forget. I remember the exhaustion, the pain, the faces of the midwives and doctors, the moment the buzzer went off and everyone rushed in...
Second was calm ELCS. Remember every minute but it was calm, a bit scary but very lovely.

Charm23 · 16/10/2020 21:38

I had my daughter 9 months ago using just gas and air. My memory of the day is not great, especially once labour started. I only remember bits and pieces really!

Hardbackwriter · 16/10/2020 21:40

Does Entonox make you forget only what happened when you're using it, or does it affect other recent memories? I have big gaps in my memories throughout my 20 hour labour but only had gas and air for the last 40 minutes of the pushing stage (and not much of it then because I couldn't get the timing of the breathing right) and then loads of gas and air for the manual removal of my placenta an hour later.

IfIHadAHeart · 16/10/2020 21:42

I remember both of mine. Home births, no pain relief.

Mamabear12 · 16/10/2020 21:46

I quite remember all of mine. The last was only 2 hours 50 minutes and I remember it all 😀 but I didn’t use much gas and air for it. No other pain medication. It was painful during contractions, pushing not so much as it happened so fast. The other two I had epidurals and remember them as well. Some people block things if they felt it was traumatic. But mine were okay, so I remember it all.

Onairjunkie · 16/10/2020 21:46

I wrote down an account of it. It was an elective section so was very calm and amazing. I also bled a lot but you’d never have known.

bluebearss · 16/10/2020 21:48

Barely anything. Some of early labour. I ended up with a cat one section under general anaesthetic, had a severe haemorrhage and kidney failure, multiple blood transfusions and an infection and was kept sedated for hours. Didn't even meet my baby on his birthday.

eddiemairswife · 16/10/2020 21:48

First two in hospital, bits remembered. Last two at home, didn't need any pain relief, so I remember those even it was more than 50 years ago.

bluebearss · 16/10/2020 21:50

Oh, and the resulting morphine and PTSD meant I barely remember my baby's first week (spent in hospital)!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 16/10/2020 21:56

Yep - every horrific second of it! Thankfully ended up having a section so didn't have to deliver naturally - some people recoil in horror when l say l wanted a c-section but quite frankly, l don't care. Never known pain like it until the epidural kicked in

SunshineCake · 16/10/2020 22:04

I have had three. One emergency section. 2VBACs. I remember everything from each birth.

BakewellGin1 · 16/10/2020 22:12

My first I remember most but have about 20 minutes after the birth missing - forceps delivery without pain relief meant I blacked out completely from the part I pushed and the consultant pulled Confused

The second unfortunately or fortunately yes I remember it all.. It comes back in parts on and off and gives me sleepless nights. Counselling has helped a little

NameChange30 · 16/10/2020 22:19

RedDiamond
I have big hips and size 8 feet and it fucking hurt! Both times!

OP I can't remember much of my first birth - I did have gas and air for much of it but I've forgotten the detail of what happened even before I had the gas and air. I think your brain goes to a different place and primal instincts kick in. Also maybe you kind of block it out afterwards.

I can remember more of my second birth, no gas and air, but that was more recent and I'm forgetting details already.

goose1964 · 16/10/2020 22:56

I remember talking to the midwives, with DS1 , about how elephants make a protective circle around the one giving birth. DS2 I had a painless labour and I remember my DD and our midwife making jokes to get me to laugh. Finally DD , was being induced at about 9am and the doctor told me that my cervix was high and thick so they'd be sending me for a c section the next day. My dad brought my boys in to see me and the contractions suddenly started. Then my contractions had contractions and DD exploded into the world around 2.30
