What's the most uncomfortable movie or TV scene you've ever seen?

Uncomfortable can mean anything, scary, sad, creepy, gory etc...

I was just watching AHS this afternoon, the Cult season and there is a scene with a nail gun (if you've seen it you'll know!).

I am really not a squeamish person but this scene just made me go cold, I was about to fast forward it before it finished.

It wasn't even the most gruesome thing I've seen on TV/a movie before but the whole idea just made me feel really uncomfortable and like I was really horrible for watching it if that makes sense?

Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom. Where they slit open a snake and little ones slither out. Freaked me out as a kid.

Isthisnothing · 16/10/2020 22:31

Requiem for a Dream - thankfully I have forgotten the details but mentions on this thread reminded me how the sight of the mum's face on rhs dvd cover in the shop used to set off the waterworks.

The young Ray Winston prison movie is called Scum. It is banned. If you haven't seen it, don't.

The rape scene in Monster. It goes on and on.

And yes - the worst of all is the rape scene in This Is England. I actually think all young women should be made watch it, then rewind it and make them watch it again. What is the absolute worst thing about that scene is she knows something bad is going to happen but she hesitates. She should have run the moment it dawned on her that she was not safe. If she was mistaken and she offended him, so what?

If this thread was being answered my men I guarantee most of the answers would be the scene in Deliverance. It is decades old but it is so very unusual because it is sexual violence against men.

Jobseeker19 · 16/10/2020 22:35

I found Scum in Poundland when my Internet was down

TheBlueStocking · 16/10/2020 22:40

I remember No Child of Mine. The bit at the end when she cries while holding the care worker is so upsetting.

SinkGirl · 16/10/2020 22:41

Requiem for a Dream is on my Amazon watch list, but it's coming off now!

It really is an incredible film, but harrowing and will stick with you. Definitely something you need to be in a healthy headspace to watch!

In a completely different vein, Somewhere In Time has haunted me since i saw it when I was little. It’s been years since I saw it and I’m sure it would be really dated and probably awful if I watched it now, but the end of that film ripped my heart out.

Also, if anyone has seen the TV series The Shield... I don’t need to explain, there are several key moments that are devastating and will never leave me.

Oh, and the end of Being John Malkovich. Such a brilliant film, but the end really gets to me.

@SavyArtichoke

12 years a slave- so many horrific scenes

The pianist- when the nazis drop the elderly man in a wheelchair over the balcony. I can't watch it.

The stoning of [name I can't remember] - the stoning scene was graphic and went on for ages. I had to leave the room until it finished.

Yes that Pianist film made me so upset, and also when the elderly man was punched in the face by a Nazi just for being on the street
woodhill · 16/10/2020 22:46

There was a film in a science lab where someone suffocates someone with a plastic bag - late 80s and the guy turns into some sort of zombie/ monster

Marrowfatpeas · 16/10/2020 22:49

I haven’t RTFT (10 pages by the time I found this thread) but Wolf Creek. Totally hideous. A horror that was ‘recommended’ to me by film critics. Based on REAL LIFE involving backpackers being paralysed and raped By a sadist. I hate hate hated the bit I saw and am angry at myself for even watching the part I saw. Never watch it.

Evilwasps · 16/10/2020 22:53

Eyedrops I remember that farm safety film! It was horrific, too much for primary aged kids. I was terrified of going to farms for a long time afterwards which was a bit of a problem as we lived in the country and several friends lived on farms.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 16/10/2020 22:54

The Handmaid's Tale. Just uncomfortable viewing where the handmaids didn’t know who to trust so couldn’t safely form an alliance.

OP I completely get the nail gun thing, it’s one of the few things that I find really uncomfortable to watch.

Oddly I’m OK with Se7en (one of my favourite films actually), but get very upset about anything involving animal abuse. As a child I saw a film at the cinema where a kid was telling his/her friends about how tame their pet crow was and to prove it they all threw stones at it. The poor thing got stoned to death😭. I’ve always loved animals and it really upset me.

Dances WIth Wolves - when the wolf and horse were shot 😭

Artax drowning in The Neverending Story
I was so upset by that. Poor horse 😭

The scene in Reservoir Dogs where someone gets their ear cut off. All done to the jaunty tune of Stuck In The Middle With You
Oh yes, I came on to say that. It’s horrid 😬

Spooks - the deep fat fryer episode
Yup

AnnPerkins · 16/10/2020 22:57

@Clovertoast

The rape scene in This is England. It's so real, raw and horrifying.
I came here to say this.

Rape scene in this is England
Dog kicking in Tyrannosaur

goose1964 · 16/10/2020 22:58

The scene in 12 years a slave where he gets whipped for no reason, actually that whole film made me so sad.

Oh god no. I can never ever ever watch that film. I've not seen it but I saw a very brief clip and read the plot and no. Just no. The idea if it makes my skin go all tingly and the small clip I did see really freaked me out.

I agree re the kerb scene in American History X, probably the scene that has stuck in my head for many years and still makes me feel queasy.

The whole of When They See Us about the central park 5 plus the interview with Oprah.

Jeepers Creepers until you saw what was terrorising them. I nearly left the cinema but that ruined it as wasn't scary at all.

Hannibal the film, I felt nauseous throughout.

Weird one but I felt really distraught during the last half hour of a star in born ( most recent version).

There was a netflix documentary about twins and they had suffered abuse but one didn't remember, it was quite harrowing.

I read the book by James Bulgers father, I didnt sleep for days

opinionminion · 16/10/2020 23:05

The cook the thief his wife and her lover ... part of this included a naked dead body laid out on the dining room table with all the trimmings ... just like a Victorian Christmas ... then it gets carved ... just like a roast joint.
I watched this film 30 odd years ago and it still creeps back into my mind Confused

AriesTheRam · 16/10/2020 23:13

@CrankyFrankyHoot I can watch anything.Human centipede, seven and wolf creek didn't bother me but that was just too weird. It wasn't gory just..I cant explain it without a description that you might not want!

bagelbaby · 16/10/2020 23:20

Too many rape scenes. It's. Not entertainment. It's sick. Male directors trying to outdo each other with vicious nastiness

In the film ‘Ida’ - the scene with the window. It was so shocking because you didn’t expect it. Nothing in comparison to some of the things being described above but so abrupt and deeply sad. That stays with me.

@OohThatCat I always wondered if she kissed him on purpose knowing he would turn into a zombie as revenge for him running away and leaving her to die in the house at the beginning? The bit where he pushes her eyes in is the worst!

bottlenose301 · 16/10/2020 23:35

Bus 174 - it's a docu film based on footage of a real life bus hostage situation in BrazilI recommend it but it's quite harrowing. I watched with 2 friends and after we went to the pub and just drank in some sort of trance.

Ontheboardwalk · 16/10/2020 23:35

Another vote for This is England, stayed with me since I watched it many years ago

A Serbian film, I’d heard so many nasty things about the film my mind played proper overtime before I watched it. Turns out my mind was more fucked up than the film itself. This is England stayed with me more
