To think a roast dinner is nicer if you have it infrequently

As a kid we had a roast every Sunday but once I had my own DC it became an infrequent “treat”. I just got very bored of having one every Sunday. I did an impromptu one tonight and my (now adult) DC really appreciated it but both said it wouldn’t be special if I made one every week. Although DS did say he wouldn’t turn down a weekly one Grin
So AIBU to make it a rare treat?
YABU - Sunday wouldn’t be Sunday without a roast
YANBU - it’s more special to have a roast infrequently

I don’t enjoy my own roast but love it when someone cooks it for me.

Smallsteps88 · 15/10/2020 20:42

Agreed. Also nicer if my mum makes it Grin

DelphineWalsh · 15/10/2020 20:43

Roast at least once a week but it doesn't have to be on a sunday

Coldbatteredpuddings · 15/10/2020 20:43

Completely agree - it's such a chore and cooking it takes up far too much of my precious weekend. Once or twice a month during the winter is plenty and i never roast between April/May and September!

Meruem · 15/10/2020 20:43

This is true, a roast made by someone else is always nicer!

Oh yes, definitely better when cooked my someone else.

HollowTalk · 15/10/2020 20:45

That's why Christmas lunch is always nicer if you don't have too many roast dinners throughout the year.

Yes but when I've made it I never have the appetite to eat it..

DollyDoneMore · 15/10/2020 20:47

Roast dinners don’t take much time, though. Chicken takes next to no prep. Potatoes need a parboil then do the rest themselves. Root veg / cabbage - bung in the oven with some spices. Frozen peas, nothing to do.

It doesn’t need to be every weekend, but it’s hardly a chore if it is.

NotOfThisWorld · 15/10/2020 20:48

I definitely couldn't be bothered cooking up a proper roast once a week, I probably wouldn't turn it down if someone else was going to do the cooking but yeah it would be less special.

PuppyMonkey · 15/10/2020 20:48

I think occasional is much better. And you must only have them in winter. With lots of wine if you’re the one cooking them.

Gemma2019 · 15/10/2020 20:49

I do a roast dinner almost every Sunday. Everyone enjoys it and it's easy enough to cook. I do more trimmings for Christmas dinner so it's not the same.

Rosebel · 15/10/2020 20:49

I would be more than happy to only have a roast once a month or even less but my husband and children love it so I do a roast every Sunday.
I find it a, real chore and it seems to take ages to make it. Quite often by the time I've cooked it I don't want to eat it. Although I do love a Sunday roast cooked by my mum.

rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 20:51

We had a roast every Sunday as kids, and I do a roast every Sunday for my family now. On the rare occasion I don't, the feel guilty. Confused

7Days · 15/10/2020 20:52

That goes for most dinners though.
We had exotic curry as a rare treat in the 80's, nowadays it's a weekly staple.
Not as special

Meruem · 15/10/2020 20:54

Yes, a bottle of wine may have been opened this evening while I was in the kitchen Wink

I haven't cooked a roast dinner since maybe February. I really enjoy them when I have one and I really don't find it takes that long to do, but there are things I much prefer. Plus, a weekly roast just conjures up memories of long, grey Sundays with fuck all to do apart from snooker on tv in the afternoon, 'Allo, 'Allo or Hi de Hi or some such tv in the evening and a hair wash to the Top 40.

lynsey91 · 15/10/2020 21:12

We usually have a roast at least once a week but not always on a Sunday.

I don't get that it is a chore or takes ages. I make my own yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes and do loads of veg, usually mashed parsnips, roast parsnips, carrots, roasted carrots, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, green beans, peas and cabbage.

No I don't enjoy it more if someone else cooks it. I make a delicious roast dinner and enjoy eating it. If DH cooks one I enjoy it but others not so much especially when they use frozen yorkies and/or roast potatoes

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/10/2020 21:16

We very rarely have a roast! Neither of us enjoys cooking a roast with all the trimmings so we don't bother! We will have vegetarian alternative for a joint of meat, mash and veg but that's it! If we ever have Yorkshire pudding then it's frozen ones! I really hate cooking.

Inextremis · 15/10/2020 21:16

I go round to a friend's house (with DH) and cook a roast for 4 or 5 of us every Sunday (except not for the next 4 weeks, thank you Covid!). One week beef, the next lamb, sometimes chicken, rarely pork - but it's as easy as anything and gives me plenty of time to sit down and chat with my friends. One of them peels all the veg, which is the hardest part, too. It's a lovely communal thing to do once a week - we eat all sorts, curries, paellas, pasta etc. during the week, but always a roast on Sundays!

Ratatcat · 15/10/2020 21:19

We tend to do it weekly in the winter and I find it is a nice ritual where we all do eat together and make it more of an occasion. In the summer It’s more of a bbq thing.

Peacenquiet2 · 15/10/2020 21:20

Absolutely agree

Nottherealslimshady · 15/10/2020 21:31

I think people get lazy when they do something too often. I enjoy making a sunday dinner and plan it so I have loads of time to get everything perfect. MIL has made one every week since she can remember and it's just like a chore so its not as nice because she cant really be arsed anymore I think.

pregnantncnc · 15/10/2020 21:49

I'd be happy with a roast every Sunday during winter if I didn't have to cook it each week. As it stands, I like to have a big (unhealthy) hearty family dinner each Sunday as we like Sunday to feel different, and eating something we'd not eat during the week is an important part in that for us. Every other week or so its a roast, but it could also be a really cheesy lasagne with garlic bread, or a sausage casserole with roast potatoes or Yorkshires on the side, or fish pie and chips (don't ask - it's DH's absolutely favourite combination).

When its hot I can't even handle putting the hob on to boil some pasta let alone cook a whole roast. Agree with the PP @Ratatcat that "Sunday roast" tends to become "sunday bbq" in the summer and its a nice occasion to eat together.
