To think a roast dinner is nicer if you have it infrequently

As a kid we had a roast every Sunday but once I had my own DC it became an infrequent “treat”. I just got very bored of having one every Sunday. I did an impromptu one tonight and my (now adult) DC really appreciated it but both said it wouldn’t be special if I made one every week. Although DS did say he wouldn’t turn down a weekly one Grin
So AIBU to make it a rare treat?
YABU - Sunday wouldn’t be Sunday without a roast
YANBU - it’s more special to have a roast infrequently

@Orangelover I also think about Christmas dinner every day! Is there a support group? Grin

I love a roast. I love Christmas dinner. I love boxing day sandwiches even more. As the cook I love doing the dinner and planning it but it's just not as nice to eat as the cook.

I also love a carvery. We always have one on holiday in mid August and it's amazing.

SuzieQQQ · 17/10/2020 14:16

We have it weekly. It’s one of the easiest most simple meals ever! How do people think it’s a chore?

Squirrelblanket · 17/10/2020 15:00

I absolutely love cooking Christmas dinner but not a normal Sunday roast, I have no idea why. Anyway it means I can only be bothered to do it a few times a year, but both of us are fine with that. There's always so many other meals we fancy that I don't like the idea of a single meal having a regular slot each week. I do like going out for a Sunday roast too!

I have an aunty who makes a Sunday roast religiously each week, except from the end of November as they like to have four weeks roast free to prepare for Christmas!

@twobrews

And I forgot mashed potatoes it's not a roast without them!
Of course it is. It’s not called a fucking mash!

Well, it's not called a boil either but there's a huge proportion of people boiling veg to oblivion every Sunday Hmm

And they’re idiots. Tray of veg, splash of oil, bung in the oven. Cauliflower, cabbage, sweet potato, peppers, carrots, onions, whatever, whatever. Roast it. It’s a roast.

We do a sort of roast most sundays but often it's just a roast chicken, potatoes and veg, (so we can use the leftover chicken 19 times in the week), no 'trimmings' or complicated stuff. We have beef or pork every 2/3 months.

StormyInTheNorth · 17/10/2020 22:34

I go through periods of doing a Sunday lunch, then everyone goes off it and I start to resent all the peeling, chopping and not playing with DD so I stop. At the moment we are onto 'party tea' on either Friday or Saturday where we have a buffet with (mini) pizza, salad and party bits. It's going down well. It's still a special weekend meal, just not a roast lunch.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/10/2020 22:47

One of my easy meals then you have leftover meat for risotto etc. It’s weird not having one to me. One thing we all eat and enjoy. I do gammon or chicken in slow cooker. Roast spuds in airfryer.

Teaandchocolatedigestives · 17/10/2020 22:55

Yanbu. I enjoy cooking but absolutely hate making roast dinners. Don't know why. If I'm going to that effort, I'd rather make a lasagna or curry from scratch.

We are rarely in the mood for one anyway. Mil usually makes one during the colder months when we visit and very occasionally my mum might make one so she'll do extra for us but it's not often. We probably have one about 3-4 times a year.

My mum

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 17/10/2020 22:59

I think you are right. Although my older teens love roast dinner.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/10/2020 23:15

We have a roast probably 5 to 10 times a year, including Christmas

But i do have a friend that has a roast every week...Except for the two weeks before Christmas, as it makes the Christmas roast a bit more special

DragonPie · 18/10/2020 07:36

Can’t be bothered doing a roast every week, it’s a treat and having it all the time makes it boring. The kids would rather eat cottage pie or spag bol anyway. We always eat dinner sitting up at the table so it’s not like we miss out during the week.

Fruggalo · 18/10/2020 07:46

As others, my mum made one every week and the quality was rubbish. She’d have time saving hacks to work it around church which on reflection contributed to the taste (putting the peas in the water so they’re ready to turn on three hours later kind of negates the effort the suppliers made to get them frozen within a couple of hours or so of harvesting; par boiling carrots at 8am and leaving them in their juices until 12.30...). I remember once staying with some friends when I was 4 and having chips on a Sunday and I thought it broke some law.

I make them when I want to now, which is more frequently in the winter, and “fresh”.

puddlesuit · 18/10/2020 09:00

We have one every Sunday, it would feel strange not to have one! Me and my brother and our families go around to our parents every Sunday and our dad cooks dinner for us all

ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/10/2020 09:14

We have one every Sunday as my dc love it. It takes no longer to prepare than any other meal and I do a simple version - tray of potatoes and vegetables in the oven, tray of chicken. Leave it all to cook while I spend time doing other stuff. Some more veg on the job towards the end.
You don’t need to parboil potatoes, even though they are nicer. They’re still nice just oiled, seasoned and adding herbs such as rosemary or thyme.
