We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

I love a good fabric softener and tumble dryer

I hate line dried clothes. They always see so stiff

*itchy legs

Sakura7 · 14/10/2020 13:54

I like it, which is just as well considering I live in a very hard water area and can't do without it.

have been complimented on how clothing smells

No you haven't, don't tell fibs. Nobody goes around telling people how nice their clothes smell.

Another vote for Smol, we have the laundry detergent capsules and dishwasher tablets and now the new fabric conditioner (because I do like the smell) which is animal fat free!

MonkeyDance · 14/10/2020 13:59

I love it. But I’m weird, I know. I love perfume, perfumed products, perfumed everything!

I especially love those scent boosters like Lenor Unstoppables, but apparently they’re hideous for the environment / toxic to sea creatures so have weaned myself off.

Oh, and I actually really have been complimented many times on my fabric conditioner-ed clothes. Honest!

Maybe the poster lives in an advert, that's the only place it's likely to happen Grin

I always use it, I've got touch sensitive skin and scratchy fabrics give me rashes, I need soft things. I dont eat meat, I recycle everything, I buy second hand, use smol capsules, I'm giving myself this one thing .

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 14/10/2020 14:04

We are in a very hard water area and without fabric conditioner our towels are like sandpaper, even after tumble dryer. I only add a little bit though and nothing reeks and towels dry us perfectly!

Nottherealslimshady · 14/10/2020 14:06

@PasDevantLesElephants didnt know they did it! Awesome just set up my order.

burritofan · 14/10/2020 14:08

YANBU. Fabric conditioner stench is horrific and no one who uses it knows. I feel like I spend my life fending off my SIL’s offers of hand-me-downs, trying to find excuses when really we just don’t want the stink bomb. It’s so much work to decontaminate fabric-conditioned clothes. And everyone on this thread who uses it and thinks they don’t smell/they use a subtle amount: sorry, you’re wrong, you have broken your nose with the unholy liquid.

Doubleyikes · 14/10/2020 14:09

ReviewingTheSituation You could be on to something. I don’t use fabric conditioner because I can’t stand the smell and I don’t have a toilet brush because they seem unhygienic.

BrazenlyDefying · 14/10/2020 14:09

@PatriciaPerch

I like the smell of petrol
I like the smell when they're re-tarmacing the road.

But I don't want my bed and towels to smell of it.

@draughtycatflap

It is absolutely VILE stuff! The REEK is DISGUSTING! It smells like ANN WIDECOMBE’S SWEATY BALL SACK! I know a woman who had so much softener on her clothes she slid into the road and was killed. Serves her right for sticking up the place!
You're not wrong ~ when I put my cat in just to soften up his fur a little, he flew out of the washing machine like a bullet when I opened the door ~ in future I'm not using that smelly, slippery stuff, he normally just flops out and jumps into the tumble dryer.
vanillandhoney · 14/10/2020 14:13

YANBU, it's awful stuff. It makes me itch and gives me weird rashes too!

lazylinguist · 14/10/2020 14:15

Why do people find fabric conditioner scents so particularly offensive? The vast majority of washing powders and liquids, cleaning products soaps, hair products, toiletries etc are scented with artificial smells.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 14/10/2020 14:16

Ew!
Have you seen the latest craze involving a certain barmy army. They put fabric conditioner on to boil on the hob 'for there house to smell amazing all day' they put it in wax melters and WALL PLUGS IN. It's flammable.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 14/10/2020 14:16

Their*

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/10/2020 14:21

You’re not supposed to use it on towels anyway.

We’re in a hard water area but I stopped using conditioner some time ago after reading how it can clog up the machine with gungey slime.
Two x 90 deg washes with just soda crystals showed just how much build up there was!

I now use just powder, much less than I once did, directly into the drum, and soda crystals in the drawer.

This comment just tipped me over the edge 😂
