that fabric conditioner is VILE?

We are staying in a (very nice and modern) holiday let this week. No complaints apart from one. The entire house REEKS of fabric conditioner. The owners have obviously splashed out on nice white cotton bedding and thick, expensive towels, but it's all ruined by the stench. You get into bed and all you can smell is the chemical reek. You can't dry yourself with the chemical reeking towels because they're so "conditioned" that they slip all over you without actually absorbing anything.

Why do people do this? It doesn't smell clean, or laundered. It smells artificial and nasty. Just don't. At home we don't use conditioner at all, the water is soft and it's totally unnecessary. Laundry straight in off the line smells wonderfully fresh, the fab con stuff doesn't.

Should be banned!

Towels shouldn’t be conditioned ruins the absorbency.
Also these plastic coated capsules are damaging to the environment, warning on all boxes, use liquid or powder.

Movinghouseatlast · 14/10/2020 11:30

I agree- the mass produced ones are so strong. I stayed in a fantastic holiday cottage where the sheets smelt awful- a bit like Opium perfume.

When I bought a holiday cottage we had a cleaner who did the laundry and she clearly used the same brand! I do my own laundry for it now and I use Bio D conditioner which just smells clean.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 14/10/2020 11:31

I live in a really hard water area so have no choice unless I want to walk around wearing cardboard but it shouldn't be overpowering at all. Some people use far too much

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 14/10/2020 11:31

Thanks, I’ll give it a try!

seayork2020 · 14/10/2020 11:31

I got a second-hand item for ds and had to wash it about 10 or so times before the smell went,I have never used softener myself

FizzyGreenWater · 14/10/2020 11:32

Oh horrific.

Leave feedback! I'd absolutely hate that

Someone1987 · 14/10/2020 11:34

😳 I've always used it without much thought. Worried it's too much now 😳

Crankley · 14/10/2020 11:36

I couldn't agree more, OP, it's all totally revolting.

ppeatfruit · 14/10/2020 11:37

It's disgusting, it is also bad for our endocrine systems. I can certainly smell it on people who use it. It makes their machines gungky. It's the effin conditioners they use.

The waterways must get so badly affected by them. BAN THEM I say

White vinegar, bicarb and normal organic refillable clothes washing detergent works fine. Oh and those water softener balls, the machine is shiny and has lasted for many years.

ppeatfruit · 14/10/2020 11:39

Sabrina You can buy water softeners for your machine and your house. You don't need those stinking conditioners.

RatherBeRiding · 14/10/2020 11:41

You simply can't beat the smell of clothes that have been line-dried outside on a sunny day. Just reading this thread makes me sad that such days are now very limited until next spring.

Feellikedancingyeah · 14/10/2020 11:42

Perhaps use a small amount of something gentle like Fairy?

PumpkinetChocolat · 14/10/2020 11:47

You can smell it on some people just walking past them in the street. There are worst smells, but that can't be healthy!

I use a bit for work clothes, they really are easier to iron, but that's it.

Let's be honest, fabric conditioner smell identical or near identical to toilet plugs-in and cleaners.

I wear a very pleasant (and expensive) perfume, I don't need to drown the laundry in cheap and unpleasant "fragrance".

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/10/2020 11:47

Fabric softener also makes your clothing more flammable.

VinylDetective · 14/10/2020 11:49

It’s vile stuff. We stayed in a B&b once where the bed linen smelt so strong it kept me awake, far fetched as that sounds. It never comes into our house.

LunchBoxPolice · 14/10/2020 11:49

BAN THEM I say

Bloody hell, this thread is much more dramatic than I expected it to be.

NannyR · 14/10/2020 11:49

I agree, I once stayed in a cottage where the sheets felt almost greasy because they had so much fabric conditioner on them. I never use it at home as I don't like my clothes to be fragranced and I prefer my clothes and sheets to be "crisp" rather than too soft. Maybe that makes me more sensitive to the smell.
My sister borrowed a sleeping bag from me and washed it with FC before she returned it, it's taken four washes and I can still smell it.

WhatWouldJKRDo · 14/10/2020 11:52

Ghastly stuff. Unneccessary and so smelly.

speakout · 14/10/2020 11:52

Agreed OP- it is horrible.
I live in soft water area, and line dry all year round- so my laundry is naturally fragranced by the clean wind.

Sunshineandflipflops · 14/10/2020 11:53

I love the fabric softener I use and people who come to my house have always commented how lovely the clean washing smells. Cheap washing powder smells however are horrible in my opinion.

Lozz22 · 14/10/2020 11:53

I like it I like the co ops own in a gold coloured bottle but I only use a tiny bit at a time. Don't like buying one without smelling it first though so doing an online shop at Asda was the case of just hope for the best. I have got a 2 in one liquid and softener which is gross. Doesn't smell nasty or anything. To be honest it hardly has any scent at all once it's dried. As for towels I like mine hard and scratchy actually feel like I'm dry with them. Soft fluffy ones don't make feel me dry at all. Although they are nicer if you aren't in a rush to get dried and just want to relax on the bed for a bit after a bath or shower

tmh88 · 14/10/2020 11:53

I use fabric softener on everything but towels! I’m paranoid now..Blush to me it doesn’t smell very strong but maybe I have become use to it and make other people feel sick! Blush

SlightlyJaded · 14/10/2020 11:53

Also in a very hard water area (London). I have to use it or everything dries like it's just come out of very salty sea - rigid.

Would love to know a viable alternative.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 14/10/2020 11:54

The only one I can deal with is comfort pure.. softens the clothes without adding a scent, and doesn’t irritate sensitive skin.

ppeatfruit · 14/10/2020 11:54

Yes mypath The advertising is insidious and tells lies. People are influenced by them, a number of those products can harm your health.

They can give people and children eczema and worse.
