AIBU to ask you why helicopters fly over my house daily?

Does anyone know why? I’ve googled and found nothing. Is it the police? Ambulance? Monitoring of traffic? All of the above or more? Genuinely would like to know why I see them daily and if that’s unusual or not and what they are doing. I’m in North London if that’s relevant. Thanks!

They have found you. Quick, fashion a helmet out of foil and turn off your wifi. It's your only hope...

bitheby · 13/10/2020 17:37

Download the Flightradar24 app and you can see what they are?

PleasantVille · 13/10/2020 17:38

Because you're on a flight path?

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2020 17:39

Because they are and they can.

PawPawNoodle · 13/10/2020 17:39

They're doing it to annoy you.

It's pretty common to have helicopters overhead in London, and they're usually police. Have you only recently moved here?

DynamoKev · 13/10/2020 17:40

We get plenty of the noisy fuckers here - we're not far from an airport.

BillThePony · 13/10/2020 17:40

Are you near any army barracks? My old house used to get helicopters going in and out of the barracks a fair bit.

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 17:43

We get loads of helicopters. More than we used to, in the last 6 months or so. Now it's all the bloody time.

Twice in the last month we've been woken at 1 or 2 am by one hovering nearish, and doing small circuits. For an hour or more! So loud.

No searchlight so no idea what they're up to.

North London as well.

Twigletfairy · 13/10/2020 17:43

Depends where you live.

I currently live near the coast, so regularly see the coastguard helicopters.

I used to live near a big hospital with a helipad, so would regularly see air ambulances.

So I don't think it's unusual, but the type of helicopters you're seeing will depend on your area

Nonamesavail · 13/10/2020 17:43

Low level flying training i think. We get it all day some weeks

Fluffy40 · 13/10/2020 17:45

Same area as you, police and air ambulance.

chipsandpeas · 13/10/2020 17:48

police or traffic helicopters are the main ones i seem to get around me

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 13/10/2020 17:48

Do you live near Simon Cowell? Maybe he's going for his daily tooth polish.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2020 17:49

Not unusual here, live south west, near the coast, 40 Commandos, for the motorway hospital and an airbase.

Ginfordinner · 13/10/2020 17:49

I'm in South Yorkshire and have noticed lots more helicopters over the last few months.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/10/2020 17:52

We're on the flight path for Navy helicopter training flights. It's like a scene from Apocalypse Now some days. Our record so far is 15 in one day.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/10/2020 17:53

We have the Coastguard very regularly, but also military Chinooks now and again (sometimes in pairs). Obviously looking for Russians. Or something.

SynchroSwimmer · 13/10/2020 17:56

Are you near Bushey? Or RAF Northolt?

Pl242 · 13/10/2020 17:57

I’m not moaning about them per we. I’ve lived in the area for years and in my current home for about 2, but it’s definitely increased as a routine thing. Ie not the police out clearly looking for someone at 2am (which happens sometimes) but just regular flights. So just wondered why. My little boy loves spotting them so that’s something I suppose!

We're close to a 'light aircraft' airfield so get a mix of private / pleasure helicopter flights, air ambulance and copper chopper most days. Is there one near you?

Pl242 · 13/10/2020 17:58

I’m not near any barracks etc as far as I know. Near the north circular if that’s relevant perhaps?

Seeline · 13/10/2020 17:58

Quite common if you live near small commercial airfield, or private airfield.

Police, air ambulance, traffic etc

Also things like racecourses (in normal times) as jockeys often fly between courses on busy days.

South London and we get loads.

grumpygiraffe · 13/10/2020 18:01

Did this start around the time you built that helipad in the garden?

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 18:02

That flightradar24 site is cool!

Now waiting for a helicopter... And now I'm waiting there won't be one for ages Grin

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2020 18:04

There is a helicopter experience.near me and they fly over regularly and they started back up recently could it be that?
