AIBU to ask you why helicopters fly over my house daily?

Does anyone know why? I’ve googled and found nothing. Is it the police? Ambulance? Monitoring of traffic? All of the above or more? Genuinely would like to know why I see them daily and if that’s unusual or not and what they are doing. I’m in North London if that’s relevant. Thanks!

We are on the coast so get the coastguard and air ambulance quite often especially in the summer.

AgeLikeWine · 14/10/2020 23:28

I’m in Leicestershire. We are used to seeing police helicopters and the familiar yellow air ambulance, but recently the army Chinook has become a familiar sight. They make an instantly recognisable noise, so you hear them before you see them.

Freedar.uk app is amazing (yes I am that sad and no I don't care😁)
I saw this a couple of months ago and wasnt sure if I was seeing things (I did see 3 thanks to Echo Falls) so screenshotted (is that a real word?) it 👽🛸

There is always a helicopter hovering near my house sometimes right above it.
The gardai helicopter thankfully they're not looking for me.
I told DS they are just making sure everyone is being good which has a grain of truth. My DC are so sheltered Grin

I live in North Yorkshire and often have this. It’s Ministry of Defence or the air ambulance here. I used to live in North London and heard it there too. I think it’s more likely to be police in London.

EndlessWaffle · 15/10/2020 01:24

@Pl242 howdy neighbour! Also in N London and near N Circ and also hearing the nightly choppers. I reckon they started in March April. Definitely new this year. I weirdly thought it was connected to lockdown at the start but it's just a regular thing now.
Unlike you I'm not ok with it, they really bother me! It's all through the night and frequently keeps me awake! I'd complain if I knew who it was!! Really sets me on edge.
Fingers crossed for a quiet night tonight 😁

NiceGerbil · 15/10/2020 13:03

There's 3 or 4 of us in the same part of London who have noticed a definite increase in the same time frame... So something has changed. What though?

North London friends do yours ever hover/ do really small laps in the middle of the night for an hour or more? With no searchlight?

Mydogisagentleman · 15/10/2020 13:23

Now living on the Wash. we get coastguard, ambulance and royal helicopters

maggienolia · 15/10/2020 20:58

We have a sodding Spitfire that does circuits over us.
It is incredibly loud.
I feel like going into the garden and shouting at him to do his acrobatics somewhere else.

I genuinely think I am noticing helicopters more since lockdown as there are fewer commercial flights over us on the flight path. The skies are quieter (I have seen that in Flightradar24!)

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 15/10/2020 21:40

I think I know where you live because I hear the same thing! (And I'm in north London). I actually get a bit scared by it!

greeneyedlulu · 15/10/2020 21:45

Get that every day south of the river too. Had a chinook flying over each day this week too

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 15/10/2020 21:45

After seeing your update about the north circular I know you're near me! It's awful isn't it?!

Elizaaa · 15/10/2020 22:47

Are you near the spurs ground? If so it's probably police helicopters. I've seen military ones there before too.

I remember once, a bank got robbed and I was out running and the helicopter was proper hovering above me, looking at me to see if I was one of them. Hilarious. When I got round the corner the police were dragging one of them out of someone's garden.

VestaTilley · 15/10/2020 23:18

Police probably. They fly over ours in Sarf London every day. It’s rough where we live.

keeprocking · 15/10/2020 23:22

We're not far from Lakenheath, we're lucky to still have a roof! The jellyhoppers, a left over term from the girls' childhood that I love, have been over a lot the last few weeks, hopefully the money for exercises will run out soon! flightradar isn't much use for the military stuff although I do love looking at it.

mirandatempestuous · 15/10/2020 23:26

Is it air ambulance?

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 15/10/2020 23:30

Do you know where your nearest police helicopter base is? They moved my county's police helicopter place near to me about a year ago and since then we get helicopters flying over all day and night. It was very annoying in the summer as I had to keep shutting the window at night because they were disturbing me.

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 23:41

We have army helicopters daily, sometimes the police ( rural but some nutters in the village) the rich flying to a racetrack a certain times of the year, oh and Trump came over once too. Sometimes its like a scene from.good morning Vietnam as five come over at once. Princess Anne visiting. Police helicopters hovering a few doors down because of a fatal crash.

Once or twice three or four Chinooks came so low they was about 40 foot above the house and I thought the house was going to fall apart. Thank God that was just the once as it seemed way to low, but it's not a built up area.

All very normal here

Maybe your partner's sudden passion for houseplants in the loft isn't so innocent after all!
