50inch TV

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 11:19

Ok so I ordered a 43inch 4K TV in the Amazon sale. I have now done a little research and a 50inch would be better as we will be sitting 6ft away.

I cancelled the 43inch which DH already said was a bit big and reordered the 50inch! I am now worried that this is too big and DH will go beserk our room is medium sized 15ft by 12ft ish. Help!

It's fine. My living room is roughly the same size as yours and we have a 55. It'll feel a bit big when you get it out of the box but once it's set up you'll get used to it quickly.

Boom45 · 13/10/2020 11:23

Thats a massive telly but if that's what you like then that's what you like. A big purchase like a TV is usually something I discuss with my DH but not every household works like that. I dont think you can be either reasonable or unreasonable about something like this can you?

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 11:29

I have managed to cancel it! Panic over. I think I feel happier with a smaller TV and then moving the sofa closer when watching a film. Smile

All those tech reviews make your head spin.

Surely that will overwhelm a relatively small room, I have a 34 inch and sit about 10 feet away, plenty big enough. I honestly think that over 40 inch belongs in a pub.

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 12:29

I agree but to benefit from 4k it needs to be bigger. So I am going to buy a new TV that I have to sit 3.5 - 5.5ft away. Confused If you have a dedicated cinema fine but for the average living room 50 inch screens are too big.

Bwlch · 13/10/2020 12:32

You need a 50" because you will be sitting six feet away?

Did I read that right?

HollyGoLoudly1 · 13/10/2020 12:32

We have a 55 inch in an average living room and it's too big imo. 43 would have been perfect. Gamer DH loves it though Hmm

nosswith · 13/10/2020 12:46

Are you not facing up to eyesight changes OP, which happen to most people as they age?

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 12:57

Apparently if you don't sit at the right distance you won't be able to pick up on the 4k qualities and it will be a waste of money - nothing to do with eyesight, although my eyesight is getting worse! I have been reading up on it for the last week and still can't get my head around it all.

I'm more than 6ft away from my tiny 32 inch TV. I'd get your eyes tested OP, having to sit that close to get the full effect sounds very unusual

DM1209 · 13/10/2020 13:14

65inch TV here but our lounge is huge.

I'm sure whatever TV you go with will be great, just make sure you're both happy with it.

DilysPrice · 13/10/2020 13:16

I’ve got a 49 inch telly in a smallish living room. It feels enormous initially but that wears off and it’s lovely to get the immersive effect on big budget shows. You really appreciate the detail.

Just entered a competition to win another 49 inch telly (for our large kitchen) and it’s described as being “suitable for smaller rooms”!

Bwlch · 13/10/2020 13:17

Will you wear sunscreen?

Onairjunkie · 13/10/2020 13:19

We have a 72” and sit about 12 - 15 feet away.

CounsellorTroi · 13/10/2020 13:27

We have a 55" in our 15 by 15 living room. We sit about 8 feet away. It's fine. Did seem a bit big at first but we are used to it now. And you do get fabulous detail in wildlife programmes, period dramas etc.

Moonmelodies · 13/10/2020 13:39

Is anything broadcast in 4K?

Biker47 · 13/10/2020 13:42

I have a 55 inch in my living room of similar size, I'll probably get a 65 inch TV next time.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/10/2020 13:51

We have a 50 inch. The room is about 16 feet square, and the tv is about 10 feet from the sofa. I would not want it any bigger.

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 14:00

Yes there is a bit of 4k on Netflix and Amazon.

Laiste · 13/10/2020 14:02

Ours is 47'' had it about 6 years and it feels tiny now. I think we're going for a 60'' soon but wouldn't want any bigger than that (Lounge is 33ft). DH talks about it most nights - that's the sign it's about to happen Grin

RandomLondoner · 13/10/2020 14:03

I sit with my eyes about 7feet from a 55 inch. This is the border between the distance at the upper end of what suits HD and where you can start to see the benefit of UHD.

I don't think you should size your TV for UHD, there isn't enough material, 99% of what you watch will be HD at best. Knowing this, I deliberately sized my TV so it was at the upper end of what is suitable for HD.

I'd get your eyes tested OP, having to sit that close to get the full effect sounds very unusual

There's nothing wrong with her eyes. At the distance you watch no human being can see the full detail of full-HD, let alone UHD. You literally don't see a problem with what you have because you can't see the detail that isn't there, due to your screen being too small. (Having said that, lots of people don't care about picture or sound quality when it comes to TV, you almost certainly fall into that category, so having a TV size optimised for HD probably wouldn't be worth it for you.)

FallonsTeaRoom · 13/10/2020 14:05

Ours is 65” it’s too small but our lounge is mahoosive.

Crankley · 13/10/2020 14:23

I'm sure a 50+ inch TV would look great in a Buck House ballroom but I think its massive for a living room. I have a 28 inch in a reasonably large room and can't imagine going larger.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/10/2020 14:46

Apparently if you don't sit at the right distance you won't be able to pick up on the 4k qualities and it will be a waste of money

Says somebody who wants to sell you yet another television, that you don't need if your existing TV still works.

felineflutter · 13/10/2020 15:18

It doesn't work!
