DS Weight Gain

DS is 16, 5ft7 and until recently was very active (cycling, walking etc).

He's now started college so busy studying online.

He's never really been overweight, but when he did get a bit of a tummy, he grew.

It was his birthday on the weekend and I bought him a new outfit to wear for a meal out. I bought him his usual size shirt (small) and jeans (28waist). He couldn't wait to wear them. I got him a Tommy hilfiger shirt and Levi jeans. He has asked me to buy them both for him for a while now. But when we were all getting dressed ready to go for the meal, he shouted "Uh oh". I said whats wrong and he showed me that the shirt wouldn't button and the jeans were a few inches from buttoning. He then decided to wear shorts and a tshirt which did fit him. As they were elasticated waist ones.

We went for the meal and we had a great time, albeit socially distanced from others etc.

When we got home he said I'm going to lose weight, I'm upset I couldnt wear my new outfit. I said you're probably growing and not to worry.

Have I done the right thing by saying he's growing and doesnt need to lose weight?

I feel bad for buying him a new outfit that was too small.

@AuntyMabelandPippin I have told him.

Its good that yours look after themselves. Takeaways are fine in moderation

DS gave me the clothes but he's taken the tags off them both. So looks like I won't be able to return them.

Maybe eBay them?

W989 · 13/10/2020 20:10

@PurpleDaisies I did think of that straight away

DH is over 40, slim build and is definitely a 30 waist and a small top in craghoppers/regatta and in supermarkets/Matalan, fashion shops definitely a Medium and definitely at least a size bigger.

It's a pain being at the smaller end of the scale and you're tight and prefer "supermarket" clothes!

CoRhona · 13/10/2020 20:25

My 16 and 18 yo boys are both very slim, 32" waist and over 6ft and I buy them both large t-shirts, shirts or hoodies. If nothing else they need the arm length!

W989 · 13/10/2020 20:26

@PurpleDaisies DS didnt take much notice when I asked him for them. But he was writing something on his computer

I’m not sure what this is in response to. Confused

W989 · 13/10/2020 20:38

@PurpleDaisies sorry I didnt mean to tag you Grin

DS has just come down and taken the clothes.

I said I'm going to sell them.

He said no I want to keep them.

@randomsabreuse your DH is super skinny

OP posts:
W989 · 13/10/2020 22:34

DS told me he has weighed himself but didn't tell me what the reading was on the scale.

OP posts:
W989 · 14/10/2020 16:30

Ordered some bigger clothes for DS

@QueenofLouisiana

My DS is 15 and has a 30 inch waist and he’s really slim around his waist! I think that outgrowing a 28 waist at 16 would be pretty normal! He’s likely to grow until the age of 18 or possibly even 21 as a bloke.

For reference, DS is 6’1”, 30 waist, 44 chest (to accommodate swimmer’s shoulders) and weighs about 11stone. He will be 16 next spring.

Thanks. That's good to know. I'm just worried about him though

@TheMarzipanDildo

28 inch is skinny isn’t it? He’s 16- I reckon just still growing.
Yes it is skinny. But they didn't fit him and he wanted to diet into them. I said no but he was adamant.

Should I have a chat with DS about not worrying that the clothes didn't fit him and that he's growing. I want to talk to him but not sure how he'd take it.

OP posts:
W989 · 16/10/2020 11:39

DS still wants to try and lose weight to make the clothes fit.

OP posts:
Mellonsprite · 16/10/2020 11:48

I think the clothes dimensions are small tbh, are you quite small framed as a family, or Is he still growing do you think?
My youngest DS is 15, 5’11 32 waist and men’s L t-shirts / hoodies. Everything is growing, thighs arms and shoulders etc.

W989 · 16/10/2020 12:10

@Mellonsprite i'm 5'6 and small framed. DH is 5'11 and medium upper build but smaller on his lower half.

I think DS will grow more

OP posts:
Mellonsprite · 16/10/2020 12:33

@W989 I’m with you then I wouldn’t think he needs to diet into them, I think he just needs to move up a size.

W989 · 16/10/2020 12:36

@Mellonsprite I don't know what to say though. Because he has put on weight and I think he has realised, when the clothes didnt fit, it has made him more aware of what he's eating along with the fact that he has not been exercising as much.

OP posts:
Mellonsprite · 16/10/2020 12:53

I would say again that they are small sizes and he’s clearly growing, which is a good thing, and you’d be more worried if he wasn’t growing. Maybe have a chat about nutrition, protein and good fats rather than dieting?

W989 · 16/10/2020 15:00

@Mellonsprite thanks. Will try and have a chat with him

OP posts:
W989 · 17/10/2020 15:04

@Mellonsprite it's just difficult to talk about it at his age.

The new clothes in a larger size arrived yesterday. I bought Medium and Large shirts and 30 and 32 jeans. I showed them to DS but he wouldn't try them on.
