I'm so confused lol! These are for the back room, that backs onto the garden. Havent had curtains up to now as at was summer when we moved in but it's getting colder in the evenings. So it's a big patio door/windows - I wanted to go for white/cream, but obviously not very practical. I'm not really a flowery sort of person. Trouble is all the curtains on trend seem to be grey, or pastel . I have a brown sofa, brown table and the walls are yellowy cream. I've been looking at yellow colours with a pattern, or I saw a burnt orange colour? Or would I get sick of a stronger colour. It's north facing so need something either bright, or warm maybe? WWYD

I have no curtains, I dislike them intently. I have Roman blinds, and in the kitchen etc I have hard wood Venetian with tapes, and in two rooms shutters.

Spanglybangles · 12/10/2020 19:09

I have these ones in my living room (Orla Kiely at Next), a bold choice for me to be fair, but I really like them and also have a brown leather sofa and brown table. Walls are greige and room is NE facing.

My advice is don't even think about what's in fashion or what's on trend or whatever. Get what you like. It's not a fashion show, it's something you have to look at day in and day out.

My bedroom curtains are antiques that were my granny's. She bought them in probably the 60s, and they're thick and heavy, cream background with greens and browns in a sort of tapestry style thing, leaves and branches and some birds and animals. I remember her having them in her living room when I was little, and they appear in lots of my mum's childhood photos, and now I have them. They were in a box in my mum's attic, just sitting there too good to throw away, but not being used. I love them. They're probably very old fashioned and they don't go with anything, but I don't care, they're thick and warm and remind me of my granny. I think she'd be thrilled that I'm still using them. She got her money's worth! I suspect they were very expensive good quality ones.

I also once saw them in an episode of Endeavour, in a posh boarding school headmistress's study. :)

I'm sure if you go on curtains to go, you can upload a photo of your window and dry different patterns/colours to give you an idea how it will look.

Yellow curtains - with a view of the sunflowers in the garden

RichPetunia · 12/10/2020 19:35

Heavy curtains in deep wine/red. Had them for years.

Audreyseyebrows · 12/10/2020 19:41

We have heavy curtains in a rust colour up now for the winter. Light green for the summer.

Bluntness100 · 12/10/2020 19:42

What colour is your room op and furniture?

As said. I’ve Roman blinds, they are velvet in this green colour in one room, In the other living room they are a sort of dark charcoal/ bronze silk. And in another room I have pale blush pink velvet ones.

Large windows and patio doors can look fantastic with blinds. It depends on the vibe you’re going for.

PinkiOcelot · 12/10/2020 19:47

These are my checked curtains

Pale cream and plain. Curtains in all the bedrooms, only one pair downstairs on patio doors, white blinds at all the other windows.

With this being in AIBU I thought it was to do with pubic hair initially Blush

Upstairs we're going wooden blinds with the tapes and then potentially some more sheer floaty white curtains to dress up the room with some depth and a nice way to let light in when you don't want the full on blinds effect (currently redecorating and renovating)

Downstairs we have just a muted beige/stone coloured curtains (the house came with lime green so I had to replace them quickly in fear of a migraine).... but haven't redecorated properly yet.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 12/10/2020 20:30

We have these in “natural” (scroll through)

I find grey so ghastly, I don’t understand the obsession with it.

With the colours you’ve mentioned I would go for a terracotta.

rosegoldwatcher · 12/10/2020 20:34

I too have cream walls and brown sofas in my sitting room.

I love fabrics - they tend to be the colour in my rooms because I am cowardly wary of strongly/brightly painted walls.
My curtains are made from an ancient and very weighty Laura Ashley fabric in a shade that I believe is called Pumpkin (similar in modern fabrics would be Saffron.)

I love them and may never change them!

Lilyofthevalleys · 12/10/2020 20:36

Currently considering these for my front room. They are yellow and not flowery.

Fluffy40 · 12/10/2020 20:37

Mainly brown, from the previous occupier, we shall be changing them to a deep red.

antwacky · 12/10/2020 20:40

Dark green velvet, love them, very cosy.

Lilyofthevalleys · 12/10/2020 20:46

Yes, those are nice @rosegoldwatcher, quite similar to these that I do have in my back room. Yes, I’m guilty of the grey!

Plural · 12/10/2020 22:02

White but I also have the same as @Spanglybangles in grey in another room

Skigal86 · 12/10/2020 22:14

We had a brown sofa and cream walls, now got blue/grey sofa and pale blue walls and our curtains are cream with a pale blue checked/tartan type pattern from Dunelm.

badg3r · 12/10/2020 22:19

I have cream ones everywhere. If you but fro Ikea you can open the pack and hang them but still return them if they don't look right.

Xiaoxiong · 12/10/2020 22:25

I have greige natural linen with gold and white embroidery all over in a geometric pattern. The rest of the house is quite neutral so it's nice to have a bit of pattern.

junecat · 12/10/2020 22:26

I have dark oak blinds with cream lined curtains. Furnishings are sage green, lavender and cream. I used to have brown leather with the same blinds and curtains

LagneyandCasey · 12/10/2020 22:28

We have mocha carpets, oak furniture, cream walls and dark brown sofas and curtains very similar to these - inspired by a holiday in a little cabin in the highlands. I love them. They brighten up the room beautifully. We have cushions to match.

I had six curtains (4 m high) made in this fabric last month. Very pleased with the fabric quality and company service. They are a real feature in what was previously a tall white box. Fussy fabric needs simple decor and vice versa.

Most readymade curtains from companies like Sanderson or Dorma are 1.80 metrres length which is not great for a living room but IKEA does 3m and you can easily hem them at the length you need. I got some IKEA curtains for DD in heavy cotton and for the price they’re absolutely fine!

www.peterleesfabrics.co.uk/iliv-collections/art-deco/cornflower/iliv-acanthus-curtain-fabric-cornflower-with-free-lining-1590 they also make curtains to your measurements but I didn’t want to risk getting it wrong so I used a local sewing service.
