My 10 month old DD has just picked up an antibiotic capsule and I think she has eaten it.

I know they’re not toxic for babies but I’m panicking so much

Phone 111 straight away.

Cocomarine · 11/10/2020 17:50

And you’re posting on MN instead of calling 111 because...?

Conquered · 11/10/2020 17:52

She will probably be fine, but call 111, get the packaging for the antibiotics ready, and make sure there are no more she can get hold of.

Tattoocrazymum · 11/10/2020 17:52

Call 111 rather than posting on mumsnet, we cant give medical advise

lolalouiseee · 11/10/2020 17:56

I called 111, then found the offending tablet on the floor, turns out she’d eaten some fluff instead

I have severe health anxiety and tend to overreact in these situations. That’s why I posted. Sorry I wouldn’t hesitate to call if I was 1000% sure

Well this has deescalated quickly. Hmm

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 11/10/2020 18:20

So glad it all worked out. What a shock you had, you must be feeling relieved.

lolalouiseee · 11/10/2020 18:22

I feel sick with relief. DD is a notorious floor eater and has consumed stones and bits of plastic before and always been fine.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 11/10/2020 18:27

Why was there an antibiotic on the floor? It's not like a fruit pastel which someone dropped. It's a pill; you only have one in your hand when you're literally about to swallow it. How was it in the floor?

Learn to police your mess now that you've got a kid!

ancientgran · 11/10/2020 18:29

Thank heavens you found it, panic over. I once rushed one of mine to hospital as she had found a bottle of weed killer and over half was gone, presumably down her throat, she had some on her t shirt. After hours and hours of observations we were released and as I picked up the baby's blanket I discovered where she had tipped it out. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

redvest · 11/10/2020 18:32

Please calm down. Young children pick up anxiety from their parents very easily, and could become anxious children. An antibiotic wouldn't have done any harm other than being a choke hazard. Surely anyone would realise an antibiotic isn't dangerous?

Juliehooligan · 11/10/2020 18:33

@lolalouiseee glad your panic is over, babies will always find something to put in their mouths, however careful you are!

Madcats · 11/10/2020 18:33

I am not sure whether it is helpful, but I put a stairgate on the kitchen door until DD was about 3 or 4 just so that I knew all my cleaning products and medicines etc were inaccessible to little hands and mouths.

swg1 · 11/10/2020 18:45

@WhereverIGoddamnLike TBF I have occasional wobbly hand and pills have made it to the floor between my hand and mouth before :)

eddiemairswife · 11/10/2020 18:46

With all of mine I was so obsessed with keeping the floor safe, that I never thought about getting rid of cobwebs on the ceiling. And although the children are grown and have children of their own, I still have a fine array of cobwebs.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/10/2020 18:50

My DMum is the total opposite of health anxiety (putting her own health in danger as a result)

When DD was little (under 2yo) she picked up a tablet (my DMum had the packets everywhere Hmm some loose ) and put it in her mouth . Luckily it tasted vile and I could see DD spitting it out .
My DMum answer "She shouldn't have touched them" she was a toddler Shock

Mind you , I survived eating over 100 Haribo Orange vitamins when I was maybe 5yo . I only gave one to my baby brother !

I think she'd have paniced if the Dog ate tablets though .

Right...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/10/2020 19:04

I find it's worth having a draft letter ready to send to my MP on these occasions...

Only joking Wink

So you would rather it escalated ?

Milknosugarthx · 11/10/2020 19:19

Some weird comments on here.
Op made a mistake, we all make them. We're all human. We all drop things on the floor by accident. So many high and mighty on here it's unbelievable.
Glad your little one is ok OP.

OMG I’d forgotten about that thread 😂
goingtotown · 11/10/2020 19:30

OP
Medication with young children in the house should be locked away.
I hope you haven’t got cleaning products under the sink with a toddler.

HibiscusNell · 11/10/2020 19:31

Sorry I wouldn’t hesitate to call if I was 1000% sure

You don’t need to be sure about anything to call 111. They would be happy to give you advise even if you weren’t sure. I called 111 when one of my kids fell right down a flight of wooden stairs. They seemed ok but I thought I’d phone and ask what I should look out for. All very low key without any panicking at all.

Glad it sorted itself out. 😊
