To book a holiday abroad for May half term?

I mean, I know no-one really knows. But I've worked throughout this crappy year, with only four wet days in Wales to sustain me. I'd bloody love to book a week in Croatia, Neilson resort, at half term. Would you risk it?

Nope.

FourEyesGood · 11/10/2020 17:35

Only if you can book it safe in the knowledge that you won’t lose out if you have to cancel. And if you know you wouldn’t be too inconvenienced if you had to quarantine for a fortnight upon returning.

I wouldn’t bother, myself.

BlackberrySky · 11/10/2020 17:37

Like you say, nobody knows
At this point, if you have good cancellation insurance you can book, but who knows if it will go ahead.

Cocomarine · 11/10/2020 17:37

Is it actually a risk?
If it has a full refund for anything Covid related (including having to quarantine on either side?) then yeah, book it. There’s no risk.
Otherwise - no.

strawberriesandpecans · 11/10/2020 17:38

Why not just carry on saving up but wait till nearer the time to book?

Conquered · 11/10/2020 17:39

Nope, and with holiday backlogs and companies going bust, wouldn't risk it

DebbieFiderer · 11/10/2020 17:57

I was planning to go abroad in May, for the first time in years, but I've decided to put it on hold for now. Too many unknowns, and even if we can travel freely I can't see everything being fully back to normal, so masks, distancing, queuing, having to prebook tourist sites etc. It just won't have the same level of joy and spontaneity so I've decided to wait until I can enjoy it properly.

Cheeseandlobster · 11/10/2020 17:59

I would go but I wouldnt book until nearer the time

21catsandcounting · 11/10/2020 18:00

Sadly no I wouldn’t unless I could afford to lose the moneySad

DivisionBelles · 11/10/2020 18:13

I've moved our holiday - meant to be on Portugal right now - to the week before half term and I've already mentally accepted that we're probably not going to be going. I doubt I'll get the money back unless EasyJet allow us to move the flights again.

If I wasn't already partially committed, I don't think I'd be booking anything for next May tbh.

HelloDulling · 11/10/2020 18:19

You don’t need to book yet. Start saving, and looking. But don’t book before Easter.

Bwlch · 11/10/2020 18:19

We have booked flights for next year. However, I did check our travel insurance carefully to confirm that we would be covered if the airline goes bust or we are unable to travel due to government restrictions.

Tatum1234 · 11/10/2020 18:32

We’ve booked Orlando in July. I know it’s unlikely we’ll get to go but was a bargain and balance isn’t due until the end of June so worth a chance. We have free cancellation or change dates too. Nice to have something to look forwards to.

LG101 · 11/10/2020 18:44

We have it booked for May too! It’s from this year and moved out by a year. It’s a package holiday and fully protected.

OH can work from home if needed if we need to isolate. Definitely worth the risk in our book!

HeddaGarbled · 11/10/2020 18:46

Another nope. Just wait.

Ijumpedtheshark · 11/10/2020 18:47

We’ve booked Portugal for the Easter holidays. Keeping my fingers crossed but can cancel the whole thing up to 24 hours before if it all goes wrong.

Branleuse · 11/10/2020 18:50

yeah ive booked one, but with a guarantee that it can be moved without penalty. Only to france though, so would drive and do shuttle.
Will just see how it goes. if we have to move it, then we will.

Spied · 11/10/2020 18:50

I've been telling my DC we will have a holiday May 21 since our August hol was cancelled.
Unfortunately I think I've been a bit premature in making these promises.
I certainly won't be booking whilst things are as they are.

TimeForLunch · 11/10/2020 18:58

No harm in booking if you'll get your money back in the event we are not allowed to travel to the destination at that time. We've booked a flight with BA for the end of March. They were very good with refunding 2 of our flights this year so I am confident that they will be again should it be necessary (although I sincerely hope it isn't!). Nice to have something to look forward to.

SoloMummy · 11/10/2020 20:09

Given what May was lie this year? No.

Summer maybe if I was that desperate.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 11/10/2020 20:13

depends on the booking conditions. we normally book our own flights and accommodation separately. we are STILL waiting for a refund from flights cancelled in April. Although I don't usually want a package deal, I think a package with cast-iron COVID proofing (by which I mean no quibble refund or change of date) is the only thing I'd consider.

BeigeFoodLover · 11/10/2020 20:15

If you can book with a money back/cancellation guarantee then the only negative is disappointment. We managed to sneak away in august after our Easter and early summer hols were cancelled - we booked but didn’t actually think we were going until we got there!

The queues and masks and stuff really aren’t worth worrying about, that’s life for the foreseeable and IMO worth it for a bit of time away.

Good luck x

unchienandalusia · 11/10/2020 20:16

I think you'd be bonkers to book anything now. Wait and book something last minute and save yourself the worry and hassle.

Heyahun · 11/10/2020 20:33

Yes do it - most holidays are refundable now anyway ! I’ve booked 4 trips for next year already - and I can cancel any time / get refunded if it can’t go ahead - no risk

Ghostlyglow · 11/10/2020 20:41

No. Not worth it. I know you would probably get a refund if it didn't happen but is it worth the disappointment. I think some airlines will go bust and then you might not get money back anyway.
