My friend is away in a country that a few days into her holiday brought in quarantine restrictions upon returning to the UK. No big deal to her, she can wfh and organise deliveries etc.

She just told me she was chatting around the pool and people are confused about when quarantine actually 'starts'. Most have convinced themselves it's the day after you land 'to give them time to go shopping and get food and everything ready and stuff'.

So you're quarantined, but you have a magical window of time where you can get supplies and merrily skip round the supermarket infecting everyone saying 'Oh, I'm not in quarantine until tomorrow'.

I'm not sure if they're spectacularly thick or just so entitled they've twisted the rules to suit themselves. I don't normally get annoyed about CV or what other people do but really!?

@Snog

My cousins wife corrected me in public on the spelling of my own child's name. Like I would get that wrong after 12 years. It's the classic spelling of a top ten name.
My ex-MIL phoned me on DS1s birthday a few years ago. She said "DD told me I needed to call you as its DS1s birthday. I've told her it's the 23rd but she insisted its today". Me: "it is today. Would you like to speak to him?" Her: "its not today. Its on the 23rd. I know when my grandson was born" Me: "Confused its definitely today. I was there when he was born Grin" Mind you she also tells everyone I've changed his name since his dad and I split up. His birth certificate shows I didn't!
Ddot · 11/10/2020 22:00

Oh just remembered, an mp went to housing estate, interviewing people. He got talking to a young lady and asked her what class she would say she was, her reply well I'm middle class ain't I ! he asked do you not think that you could be working class, her reply, naa cos I don't work do a

StanfordPines · 11/10/2020 22:21

@Butterer

I only found out this year that box cutters are Stanley knives.
I found that out reading this post.
DilysPrice · 11/10/2020 22:29

That sounds just like a rather unkind urban myth Ddot, but I know that it’s not, it’s from John Prescott’s documentary a few years ago about the English class system.

BendingSpoons · 11/10/2020 22:45

The one that sticks in my mind is a post on here where the OP was arguing with her DP about how long the chemist/shop was closed for at lunch. It was shut 12-2 and her DP was adamant this was 3 hours (12,1,2). I hope it was a real post Grin

The breaking quarantine for ridiculous reasons is annoying though, as it is potentially putting people at risk.

StanfordPines · 11/10/2020 23:10

’Face nappy' is a phrase used by cunts who think they're edgy.

Freeman of the land.

Graphista · 11/10/2020 23:27

@PopsicleHustler you're most welcome. I was raised Catholic and fwiw have unfortunately a very similar experience of Christmas to you. My dad is an alcoholic and most Christmases were miserable and ruined by his behaviour. Every year the thought of Christmas approaching has my stomach in knots even though I left home over 30 years ago.

I celebrated it with Dd when she was growing up but in our own way which was different to how others do things. 🤷‍♀️

I've/we've been happy and privileged to be invited to participate in various celebrations with the Muslims, Jews, Hindus etc that we know too.

Dd is now living in an area that's VERY white Protestant dominated and she's actually finding it quite disconcerting. She's studying areas that include sociological aspects etc and some of the comments some of the local students are coming out with are leaving her utterly gobsmacked!

One of the lecturers is Jewish and one of the students came out with a ridiculous comment about wwii the other day and dd and others were like "wtf! You can't say that shit!" The lecturer is apparently all too used to it and barely batted an eye - but she shouldn't HAVE to be used to it!

I have had Type 1 Diabetes for 40 years and can absolutely confirm that water has no effect on blood glucose levels whatsoever!

I beg to differ! It doesn't RAISE blood glucose levels but it contributes to the body's ability to REDUCE blood glucose - that's why an undx diabetic can have the symptom of excessive thirst as the body is trying to signal to the person to increase fluid intake in order to increase urinary output which can in turn reduce blood glucose levels.

Also, diabetics do need to have sugary items like Lucozade if our blood glucose levels fall too low

yes I understand this but this is NOT what this guy and his mother were doing, he was having a 500ml bottle of lucozade with every evening meal and often another one or even two through the day and NOT in response to low blood sugar levels, his levels were through the roof most of the time!

If ANY of the primary care hcps dealing with him had even thought to question the lack of drinks in his "food diary" in all likelihood the issue would have come to light and been quickly and easily resolved without him having to be admitted to hospital with the resulting symptoms of his unhealthy habit.

To be honest I'd expect someone so experienced in diabetes to have understood the essence of my post.

@Notimeforaname there's been appalling comments of that ilk on the many Brexit threads on here where people have tried to discuss the effect of Brexit on Ireland and Northern Ireland. Says things it shouldn't about our education system to be honest!

Spongeface · 11/10/2020 23:30

@Graphista yet more learning to be done! Thanks for that's, yes it's the word orient and the fact in my head (knowing nothing about it) the whole trip took a month or two.
Thanks ☺️

JustMe77 · 12/10/2020 00:00

My OH noticed a barely toddler changing colour choking on something he'd been chewing sat in the trolley in Sainsbury's, his mum was on the phone staring into the freezer oblivious. He pulled him out and managed to get it up (he is paed trained). The mum looked at my oh like she was annoyed and he told her what had happened (obviously in a pissed off tone) and her response was ' He should learn to f*ing chew properly then!'...OH was speechless and just walked away.

Shannith · 12/10/2020 01:34

Bit late but @FrizzyHairMalarkey I am with you 100% on your very rational and measured responses.

No need to comment on my comment. I won't take it as tacit example of a conspiracy against me Smile

Graphista · 12/10/2020 01:48

@Spongeface nobody knows everything, yes we're having a (relatively) lighthearted thread about surprising gaps in knowledge people have but nobody knows it all.

I play a trivial pursuit style game on my phone sometimes, I'm an "awkward cuss" as my mother says Grin so while it would be easier to select the subject areas I'm good at I actually use it to learn and practice remembering stuff I struggle with

I'm terrible at anything sports related as I just find it boring to watch, science I'm good at biology and human biology generally speaking as an ex nurse, but my chemistry can be quite dodgy and my physics is bloody appalling! Mainly as I struggle with maths.

I'm also pretty bad at "where a country is" type geography - sporcle as recommended by several mners has helped a bit there, I have horrible blanks when it comes to the Balkans especially in relation to the "new" countries that emerged out of the unrest in that area in the early 90's as I still have what was drummed into me at school about which European countries were where as I left school in '88 was of course still Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc (and I didn't know them that well then!)

The whole Edinburgh being west of Bristol etc blows my mind!

I know it's factually correct but it still seems weird!

UsernameNotValid · 12/10/2020 02:07

I saw someone at the local recycling centre trying to put an artificial Christmas tree in the green waste bay then get snide when the site attendant told them it went in landfill.

The person replied that it was "a bloody green tree", the attendant fired back that they sort by material not colour and a plastic/metal tree couldn't be composted. The look on the person's face as it dawned on him was priceless 🤣

TheSandman · 12/10/2020 02:07

nobody knows it all.

But some people should. Or at least know the answers to the questions they set in quizzes. I once had a stand up drag-out yelling match with one pub quizmaster who insisted there was only one egg laying mammal (the Platypus) when there are in fact five (the Platypus and four different types of echidna). For some reason I knew this and was pissed off when he awarded points to a whole room full of people who didn't. He agreed (eventually) that I was probably right but he was "going to accept The Platypus as the correct answer because that's what everyone usually thought the answer should be". Which was one of the more stupid things I've heard in my life.

Basically he was saying: 'Facts are what people think they are'.

By his atlas Bristol is probably well west of Edinburgh.

Graphista · 12/10/2020 02:24

Or at least know the answers to the questions they set in quizzes

Haha!

Yes I think that's a fair expectation

PolkadotGiraffe · 12/10/2020 02:32

@Libbyloo174

No wonder y’all heading for 2nd lockdown
🤣🤣🤣
PolkadotGiraffe · 12/10/2020 02:41

@notafanoftheman

The IQ thing depends on the population tested.
That's the point of a normal distribution. It is continually adjusted to ensure that the median = the mean, depending on the population.
Disa13 · 12/10/2020 03:27

Yesterday I told my DDad he should get his GF a Fortnum and Mason hamster for Christmas (I was very tired and had had a weird dream about hamsters)

I thought (until a few days ago) that one flew over the cuckoos nest was something to do with a chimney flue that a nest was built next to. Ffs

My favourite ever was when listening to the killers and the line goes "he takes off her dress" - my friend looked shocked and said in complete seriousness "why was he wearing her dress?" It still makes me laugh now every time I hear the song
@YesThisIsMe

I'm pretty sure in the context of IQ, that's not how averages work Confused
It is, IQ 100 is the median score of the norming sample.

Zyzxyz · 12/10/2020 05:42

You all should not freak out over this Covid thing. Do your best, try to be safe but don't make yourself crazy in the process.

DdraigGoch · 12/10/2020 05:52

@Notimeforaname

That's actually the second time in my life an English person couldn't understand that the republic of Ireland is not in the uk and is a separate country Confused

Then another time an English person told me that the Irish language doesn't actually exist...its just words we made up years ago because we couldn't grasp the English language 🤣 wtf.

An Englishman was in Anglesey ranting about immigrants "coming over here and not learning the language" etc. A Welshman just went "yeah, we've had that problem for years". The Englishman didn't get the irony.
mathanxiety · 12/10/2020 05:53

@GoldfishParade, I was so intrigued by your thoughts on celebrating Christmas that I spent about 45 minutes searching through the four Gospels looking for mentions of mince pies, but I found diddly squat.

DdraigGoch · 12/10/2020 06:00

The MP was John Prescott.

It does remind me of a scene in Porridge (starring the late, great Ronnie Barker):
Mackay: "You consider yourself to be 'working class', do you?"
Fletcher: [winding him up] "I used too, but then I visited Glasgow and now I consider myself to be 'middle class'."

Obviously - as a career burglar - Fletcher was very much 'under class'.

mathanxiety · 12/10/2020 06:09

There aren’t things that are general knowledge and things that aren’t.

I would say that general knowledge is knowledge of a wide range of subjects, as opposed to detailed knowledge of a few subjects. It also refers to knowledge that is widely known and forms the vast majority of material in simplex crosswords, quiz shows, etc. It is material that one picks up by various means, through general reading, watching TV or films, news, documentaries, internet rabbit holes, and asking questions.

theviewfromhalfwaydown · 12/10/2020 06:20

A family member told me off for hanging out washing while pregnant because putting your hands above your head will cause the cord to strangle the baby.

I did my history GCSE thinking Sinn Féin was a man with a big beard. No idea why I thought that but it’s not surprising I didn’t do very well.

I also remember as a child getting really confused when the teacher held up a globe and said that it was the world. I couldn’t work out how she could be holding it if we were in the world. I also thought until I was about 14 that people where shrunk to fit into planes. I had only seen them in the sky and for some reason thought they were tiny.

Needless to say I was want the brightest kid.
