My friend is away in a country that a few days into her holiday brought in quarantine restrictions upon returning to the UK. No big deal to her, she can wfh and organise deliveries etc.

She just told me she was chatting around the pool and people are confused about when quarantine actually 'starts'. Most have convinced themselves it's the day after you land 'to give them time to go shopping and get food and everything ready and stuff'.

So you're quarantined, but you have a magical window of time where you can get supplies and merrily skip round the supermarket infecting everyone saying 'Oh, I'm not in quarantine until tomorrow'.

I'm not sure if they're spectacularly thick or just so entitled they've twisted the rules to suit themselves. I don't normally get annoyed about CV or what other people do but really!?

I tell a story about a silly thing I used to think.
I was young, about 5-6 years old, and in our town we had a hire store that hired our equipment like mini diggers and tools that most people only need for a few days/ one job at home. It was called very simply ‘Plant Hire’. In my mind this equated to rich people hiring fancy and exotic plants for garden parties. Because of course they don’t have time to take care of the plants so only hire them for a party they we’re having 😂.

I was in my 20’s visiting the shop which by then was an off license and remember chuckling to myself about it.

I tried to explain that evolution is survival of the fittest, not use it or lose it but I don't think I changed her mind
I believe this is the case with the body and the mind. It's my motto.

PolkadotGiraffe · 11/10/2020 01:53

The EU referendum and subsequent election of Brexit Governments in the UK was a collective scream of stupidity almost unparalled in modern, developed democracies (exemptions obvious).

PolkadotGiraffe · 11/10/2020 02:06

On an individual level, the competition is tough. I'd say my worst examples are:

 1. Women cannot bear egg gametes because if they laid eggs we would see them come out every month like with chickens.

 2. Can't we just take a load of freezers to the poles to restore the ice caps that are melting?

 3. The Earth can't be spinning otherwise we would fly off into space.

I could go on, but won't put you all through more mental pain. Grin

We must always remember (as anyone who has every worked with the public is painfully aware), that the average IQ is 100... so 50% of the population are short of that, which is pretty scary when you start to interact with some of them. Confused

I got into a taxi and was wearing my hijab. I am a muslim. And the taxi driver proceeded to tell me that all terrorists are muslims and all muslims are terrorists....

Excuse me....what.. .
Hitler wasnt Muslim, Jimmy savile wasnt Muslim. The kid who walked into a school and started shooting everyone wasnt muslim. The man who walked into a gospel church and started killing everyone wasnt muslim.

And anyone who says they're Muslim and terrorises anyone goes against the teachings of the Quran and clearly doesnt love God, if they can just be so evil and kill innocent people unjustly. That soon shut him up.

PopsicleHustler · 11/10/2020 06:01

Since becoming muslim 8 years ago, I get a barrage of ridiculous questions from people I know and strangers. I actually am happen to answer questions to give people more of an open mind as a lot of people seem to judge islam from what they hear in the media, which is never good.

Here's some wonderful examples

 1. Did your husband force you to Islam

No. There is no forcing. You have to feel God in your heart.

 1. Does your husband force you to wear 'that' ?
 1. Does your husband force you to wear hijab?

No, I actually love it and own about 50 of them

 1. Wait.....so your kids don't celebrate Christmas????!!!

Yes, and we are all going to die because of it ...hahaha. grow up.

 1. Why do you wear that headscarf because you look like a member of the taliban
 1. I havent seen you in so long. I didnt recognise you with that thing on your head.

I was so upset. That thing.

 1. Why are you trying to dress like a Pakistani?

News flash, Pakistani people are not all muslims and they tend to wear their own cultural clothes, rather than a long dress what I wear.

 1. So you dont eat pork, because I have heard you love a good sausage in you.

This was said by a really old and disgusting man on the bus in front of lots of people and in front of my eldest boy too. What a pig.

 1. Why do you wear that on your head when isis wear it

Erm, isis are not muslim. They have in fact killed more muslims than anyone else. And I actually hate them like you wouldn't believe because they go against the teachings of the Quran

 1. Why don't you go out and show off your lovely and long thick hair....

Seriously
Behave.

10 . Was yours and your husbands an arranged marriage.

We are both from completely different cultures. Hes west african-british citizen and I am irish living near london. How on earth would his parents in west africa meet my protestant parents in belfast and arrange that .....

 1. Wait, so you dont believe in Jesus anymore. He died for your sins.

No , I dont believe jesus died for my sins. Besides in islam , jesus is a prophet of God. Not God or son of God as the two conflict. We believe he was a messenger sent by Allah to teach the world about God. We dont believe he died on the cross as allah would not allow his beautiful prophet to die in such a cruel way
Rather we believe he was lifted to heaven by God and he will come back at the end of the world. Like the bible says in revelation. We believe in that part too.

12
Why did you go and marry a foreigner

Hes the best man in the world, that's why. And I couldn't care less that hes black.

 1. So hold on you're telling me you're kids wake up to nothing Christmas morning

Yep, it's just a normal day for us. They aren't missing out. They get treats and presents and toys and sweets all the time. No one died . We are all ok.

 1. You're kids dont do Halloween. That's really unfair.

Yep how terrible of us. Who wants to ring the police first?

What some people fail to understand is, that Islam is actually a peaceful religion
The meaning of islam is peace and to worship one God and not associate anything with him. The quran teaches people to be good and kind and help the poor and feed the orphans and to be good to animals and treat animals as equal as humans. The quran also says to treat your muslim neighbour and non Muslim neighbour equal. The quran also says that if you kill someone it's that bad like you have killed the whole if mankind, but if you save someone it is as if you have saved the whole of mankind.

People have a bad mind about islam but actually
when I meet people, I am more than happy to answer peoples questions as long as they're not ridiculous and rude..

It's so silly that people think because I domt eat pork, which is filled with pigs crap, and dont drink alcohol or celebrate Christmas means I am living a very sad and depressed life.
I'm not. I'm very happy with a good man and wonderful kids.

DH told me his. (He had told me when it happened but I had forgotten). he works in a small office building that has 3-4 different companies in it.The companies all share a kitchen and toilets.

One of the firms is a solicitors firm and he said that one day while in the kitchen two of the solicitors were pissing themselves laughing. Turned out that someone had rung asking for legal advice and the story was that this person had stiffed his drug dealer over a drug deal and the drug dealer had made a small claims against him for the outstanding money at court.

I think that is very clever actually- you are taking known informaiton and working it through to figure out what it was likely to mean!

(And that is a great business idea).

@BashfulClam , I think your mum was right about cold drinks on top of hot greasy food. Cheese fondu enthusiasts are advised not to drink cold beer with it as it produces a nasty stomach ache known as a Cheese Baby.
I tried to explain that evolution is survival of the fittest, not use it or lose it
I've just finished reading a news article about how we're evolving to not have wisdom teeth, it specifically referenced jaw use in different cultures as possibly being connected

"For example, in the 1970s, researchers tied the larger jaw that was present in Eskimo women to their tradition of chewing leather to soften it. In parts of East Asia, it's more common to find people with fewer wisdom teeth, if any [source: Vines]. If people of a culture have reached the point where they don't use a trait, they may lose it"
science.howstuffworks.com/life/evolution/no-wisdom-teeth.htm
Wisdom teeth aren't a great example of changes due to evolution, also from the same article ;
Some experts say it's possible these teeth will eventually disappear [sources: Flamm^, Usbournee^]. Still, there are a few unknowns in the equation. Scientists aren't sure of the role that DNAA^ plays in creating teeth at the third molar position [source: Colff^]. Third molars develop entirely after birth, the only teeth to do so. Because these teeth aren't present at birth, it may be harder for nature to select against them [source: LePagee^]. For wisdom teeth to form, the tissue that starts the process of tooth building has to migrate back in the mouth to interact with the back jaw tissue. If this migration doesn't happen, then no tooth will grow there.

So the lack of wisdom teeth in adults is nothing like the idea of babies being born without pinky fingers because their parents didn't use them whilst typing out a text 😁

I think it is how the average for IQ works (if you want the technical stuff, IQ is constructed to be Normally distributed).

I love this. It also reminds me of a BBC story I read about how people used to hire pineapples to be the table centerpiece at dinner parties, or just to be seen with walking on the street, because they were expensive (it reminded me of the MN stunt pineapple thing from a few years back)

Yesterday DP looked on in complete surprise as I snapped the end off a box cutter (using the snapping tool at the end of it), revealing the next layer of sharp edge. Apparently he had no idea this was something you could do when the blade got blunt.

He was equally amazed a few years ago when I emptied the crumb tray from the toaster, had no idea crumb trays existed 😂

My sister is English and very pale with white blonde hair. Her DH is Indian. She’s been asked MORE THAN ONCE if it was an arranged marriage Hmm
@NationMcKinley you do realise that it’s offensive to ask that question, regardless of skin colour right ?
MrsCrosbyNRTB · 11/10/2020 08:45

@Cassilis - er yes, obviously. My sister was Shock the first time but it’s happened several times.

Have thought of another - when I was pregnant with my first my neighbour asked me if it was planned.

I think my sister and I must have “ask me a stupid question” faces or something

So sorry you had to go through all that Flowers (from a fellow Muslim).

Why are you trying to dress like a Pakistani?

News flash, Pakistani people are not all muslims and they tend to wear their own cultural clothes, rather than a long dress what I wear.

Yep it’s funny how people say you can’t be racist against Muslims because Islam isn’t a race, not realising that people equate Muslims to some races and then are racist because of the hijab etc.

To be fair, it would be a bit weird if T. S. Eliot used the pen name George Eliot as it’s pretty similar! It would be like if instead of using Robert Galbraith J. K. Rowling called herself Suzanne Rowling or something! Grin
