Boring question but MN wisdom needed please!!

DH and I have a corner sofa which is in sections. We no longer want the corner piece- we bought it in a different house and it doesn’t really fit in the current one.

How would you get rid of it? 10 years old but perfectly serviceable & in good nick. It seems such a waste to throw it away. But the odds of someone wanting it are surely slim.

Oh and it’s brown leather which I think is a MN no-no? So feel free to slate us for that Grin

I would pop it on your local fb free stuff/freecycle groups - it might be the case that nobody wants it, but you never know!

Winterfellismyhome · 10/10/2020 12:41

Id arrange a council bulk waste collection tbh. Much less faff

JayeAshe · 10/10/2020 12:42

Some British Heart Foundation outlets may be able to collect. Alternatively, try Emmaus charity.

CooperLooper · 10/10/2020 12:58

Stick it on Facebook marketplace, you might not get a lot for it but you might get something. Otherwise British Heart Foundation will collect for free.

BoudiccasBoudoir · 10/10/2020 13:02

Those charities won't collect something which is worth nothing for free. They will collect saleable items for free. This does not sound like a saleable item. I would put it on free cycle or local gumtree/Facebook page for free or take to the skip. Charities do not need unsaleable items cluttering up threat stock rooms or costing them the same sorts of transport and disposal costs you would have just taking it to the skip yourself

Thisisnotnormal69 · 10/10/2020 13:03

Can you post a photo?

FatGirlShrinking · 10/10/2020 13:04

Our council bulk collection separates any useable furniture items for charity projects, they also do 1 free bulk collection of up to 5 items every 3 months. After that it's £5 per collection.

leafeater · 10/10/2020 13:07

Does it still have all its fire retardant labels on? If not, I don't think you could sell it, even privately.

FromTheAllotment · 10/10/2020 13:17

BoudiccasBoudoir yeah that’s what we were thinking. I don’t think we’d persuade a charity to take it.

It does have the fire labels yep.

I can’t post a pic unfortunately as it’s currently upside down on the spare bed as this is the only place in the house where it’s not in the way!! This is sort of what’s prompted the debate.. DH has been having back problems, so is it worth potentially re-knackering his back to haul the thing upright and try to take photos and sell it, or should we just pay for disposal of a technically perfectly useable item.

Winterfell that’s my argument so I’m glad you agree Grin

TheQueef · 10/10/2020 13:21

Some homeless charities can reuse the item if it has no rips holes and has labels.
One local to me helps ex offenders too.

JaJaDingDong · 10/10/2020 13:22

Our local FB Free cycle site is great for this kind of thing - and you don't need to deliver. People collect.

Florencex · 10/10/2020 13:23

I cannot really see anybody wanting the corner section of a modular sofa. I have never found charities particularly forthcoming about collection even when I have had good furniture to get rid of (due to moving overseas). I would get somebody in and pay to take it away, be it the council or a private business.

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2020 13:24

Stick it onthe freebie sites for your area - nextdoor, freegle, freecycle and say it needs to go this weekend or it is off to the tip and see if anyone takes it.

GirlCalledJames · 10/10/2020 13:25

I think the difficulty with the question is that it’s difficult to imagine how functional it is on its own. Can you find an online image of something similar?
A friend used to have something I imagine to be similar in a corner of her bedroom, so it might appeal to someone.

Wow, that's amazing @FatGirlShrinking.

Our council do fuck all for free, and charge £18 per item to collect bulky stuff. It's no wonder the tip is always busy, especially as it's only open 6 hours a day.

It would cost us £360 to get rid of stuff that you could get rid of for free if you spread it over a year!

im5050 · 10/10/2020 14:00

Just got a new sofa
The old one we cut it up with an electric drill and took it the tip
It was lovely only 6 years old black leather large 3 seater & large 2seater
I thought about giving it away but really couldn’t deal with the stress of idiots calling and wanting it delivered
So we chopped it up 😂

pepperwood · 10/10/2020 14:05

Why is brown leather bad? Grin

Antirrhinum · 10/10/2020 14:11

My DH gleefully took an axe to our old, knackered sofa, then took it the recycling centre in the back of the car in bits. It was a sight to behold, a middle-aged man, wielding an axe like a portly, beardless Viking in battle Grin

Cocomarine · 10/10/2020 14:15

Not the point, but don’t worry about the brown leather on here. I think it’s now acceptable again because the Furnishings Police are distracted by the posters who have grey velvet 😉

Phew!

I can totally see the beef about grey velvet but surely brown leather is a classic and goes with everything! I'm sticking with mine because whatever colour I've had my lounge, my sofas always go. 👍

FromTheAllotment · 10/10/2020 15:11

Lol! Yeah we are holding on to the rest of the sofa because it’s wearing well and standing up well to the children!

Okay. I think we’ll be trying to get it up and take photos then. DH, if you’re still reading, this thread is evidence that it’s not worth bothering trying to sell the thing. MN agreed with me

I can’t really find a photo that looks similar, but this is closest, if anyone still cares (except ours is nicer!)

Thanks MNers Flowers

Do you live on a street where quite a few people walk past, OP? I've often got rid of things by putting them outside the door with a "Free - if you like it, please take it" notice. Everything I've done that with has vanished within a few hours (apart from the drum stands. It didn't work with those).

FromTheAllotment · 10/10/2020 15:14

Good idea but not really workable- narrow pavements round here, people would hate us!

I was in exactly the same position as you. I bought a very expensive leather sectional sofa. I moved house and it was too big unless I took the corner piece out. I procrastinated. For too damn long.

Eventually I sold it ( too cheaply) and bought another sofa and a small sofa that suit the room.

Job Done !
