To not stay at boyfriends again

fairynick · 10/10/2020 06:00

We both are in our twenties and don’t live together, still live at home as we’re saving and don’t want to rent etc.
Been together ages, everything is perfect etc.
Boyfriends mum doesn’t own a dryer and is always cold which means the heating is constantly on full blast.
Not too bad in the summer surprisingly as they have air on etc, but as the winter is coming and his mum loves to be warm and clothes can’t be on the washing like the heating will be put on full blast overnight which I can’t stand!
I’ve not slept a wink all night, I’m not even that hot tbf I think it’s more the way it heats up the air. I like fresh air and find the house generally really stuffy. It’s well insulated and lots of carpets etc.
It’s been a problem for a while but I’ve tried to get over myself, boyfriend knows I find it uncomfortable but we’ve always joked more than anything.
But it’s now 6am and I haven’t slept a wink.
WIBU to not stay anymore for this sole reason? It all sounds so silly but I’m bloody knackered!

@Bohemond I would’ve thought so surely! Boyfriend and mum are adamant you can’t, but there must be a way!

@RowanAlong

Sounds like she needs her son to buy her a dryer for Christmas (condensing kind that doesn’t need a vent). ‘We thought it would save you so much bother draping things on radiators Mum...’. 🤣 Maybe club together?
That's a good solution. When I moved into this 2-bed flat last year the washing wouldn't dry for days and I had to have the heating on in summer. Bought a condensing dryer, problem solved! (Of course, though, there are some items that should never go in the dryer. )
Tellmetruth4 · 10/10/2020 07:30

Drying your clothes on the radiator is terrible. The house must be damp? Could you suggest she buy a dehumidifier, hang the clothes on a rack in the spare room with the dehumidifier. Good ones can dry a whole load of washing in only a few hours. Much better than making all the walls damp and the radiator rusty and house musty smelling.

HandfulofDust · 10/10/2020 07:34

Can't you turn off the radiator and open the window in DB's room?

If you can't come up with a solution to make it comfortable for you then yes I'd just sleep at yours from now on.

SandyY2K · 10/10/2020 07:38

A couple of ooyiond:

Your BF could buy a tumble dryer. They're not expensive.

He could replace the radiator in his room, with one that has an individual control.

SandyY2K · 10/10/2020 07:39

You can usually still turn radiators off even if they don’t have a dial thermostat
How?

SandyY2K · 10/10/2020 07:44

Typo
couple of options

Love51 · 10/10/2020 07:44

We got some individual radiator Di put on, but I think you have to do.it when the entire system is drained. It costs about£100 which would be well spent, but it is disruptive, so although it would be ok if it was the boyfriends house, might not be to his mum.

ShinyMe · 10/10/2020 07:59

She needs a heated airer dryer rack thing!

scubadive · 10/10/2020 08:04

On the old fashioned radiators without dial controls, you can Turn off radiators by pullIng the plastic cap off and use some pliers to turn the metal flat bit on the top.

ivykaty44 · 10/10/2020 08:11

shut the door, turn the radiator off and open the window

tell her clothing dried indoors is unhealthy for lungs - seriously its not good and more expensive than a dryer

speakout · 10/10/2020 08:13

You need your own place.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 10/10/2020 08:17

They need a heated airer, you can get them at Lakeland. They come in various sizes. Better option than a tumble dryer as they can be folded away in between uses. It can be left on overnight if needed so no need to have the heating on. In your position I wouldn't be able to stay over, heating on overnight gives me a migraine.

Boots wax earplugs are the best I have tried OP.

helpimgoingcrazyhere · 10/10/2020 08:31

Not tried a heated airer but I’m another vote for a dehumidifier. I put my washing on an airer in the spare room and use one to pretty much dry the washing in a few hours. I’m pretty sure it would be cheaper than running a dryer or paying for the heating to be on overnight. Mine was £160 ish from screwfix. I would also find heating on overnight to be really uncomfortable.

00Sassy · 10/10/2020 08:34

@ivykaty44 is drying clothes indoors really bad for your lungs?
I’ve always dried clothes that would be shrunk/damaged in the tumble drier on a clothes airer by the radiator in my bedroom in colder months Confused

00Sassy · 10/10/2020 08:38

Seeing the recommendations for a dehumidifier I’m considering getting one.
We don’t have a spare room though so it would need to be in my bedroom where our airer is, could that cause problems?

LouiseTrees · 10/10/2020 08:40

Can you photograph the radiator bottom bits where it joins the pipe and other end and we’ll see if we can get it turned off? Also side with buying her a condensing dryer for Christmas but yes he should also come to yours more, it should be 50:50 anyway.

Savemyusername · 10/10/2020 08:40

I hate the heating on at night so I couldn’t stay there either. Plus with all the damp clothes hanging around, I agree it would be horrible.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 10/10/2020 08:42

Sassy a few things are fine. It’s constant drying of a lot of watching that causes problems because of the moisture in the air.

As mentioned up thread a dehumidifier can help.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2020 08:42

Drying clothes indoors is definitely unhealthy

www.rte.ie/lifestyle/living/2017/0105/842842-the-dangers-of-drying-clothes-indoors/

I agree with condenser tumble dryer-got one for under £200 from ao.com

Angelina82 · 10/10/2020 08:44

Start walking around naked until she gets the message. So wasteful of them to have the heating up high 24/7.

MinkyWinky · 10/10/2020 08:48

Another vote for buying a Lakeland heated aired (with cover) or a tumble drier!

oakleaffy · 10/10/2020 08:51

Also, a bit of unsolicited advice... would definitely recommend renting somewhere together for 6 months to test out living together before you commit to buying a house together. I know it seems like a waste of money, but it will be worth it.

A thousand times this.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 10/10/2020 08:53

OP, it's possible to turn off/isolate a radiator that doesn't have a thermostat. See if this video is any good (from 1:09)...

Otherwise Google "how to turn off a radiator that doesn't have a thermostat" 🙂
