To ask over 50s to check in to show we are not a separate breed of Mumsnetters

COVID has really brought out the ageism on Mumsnet! Over 50s are not an homogeneous group sucking on our Werther's Originals longing for the social centre to re-open so we can resume whist drives and coach trips to outlet stores with a nice cafe attached!

I'm mum to DC who's taking their GCSEs next year and I will have to continue working to support them through uni and because I enjoy working AND I have a mortgage!

So stop trying to lock us down - the economy needs us as taxpayers and consumers!

I'm over 50 with a teenager and work FT. From home since March. I'm working on all sorts of multi million deals and despair of the fact that so many seem to see the over 50s as "vulnerable" who need to lock themselves away. As PPs have said, we're probably the ones paying all the tax!

Evening! Reporting in.

planningaheadtoday · 08/10/2020 19:12

I'm over 50 with four children, three teenagers and one turned 20. All in different schools/ universities.
Looking forward to being able to return to work.

Shinycarabina · 08/10/2020 19:14

Just turned 50 and ds at primary school. If I have to lock myself away, then I'll have to homeschool as there's no-one else who can do the school run.

InfiniteSheldon · 08/10/2020 19:14

I'm 56 just forced to retire but actually loving it and now doing regular child care for dgc so couldn't work if I wanted to. Dh is 62 and working as a builder after selling an office job business 5 years ago. He's never been happier bar his army years. I'm shocked to be considered old tbh.

whiteroseredrose · 08/10/2020 19:14

Hi. I'm 55 fat and asthmatic.

I have DD at home and a DD at sixth form.

Happy to WFH and do very little in exchange for my DC to be able to have a full life.

TOFO1965 · 08/10/2020 19:14

I'm 51, not a fan of Werther's so I'm sorry to disabuse of that notion. I'd say to the ageists that you'll be here before you know it, and you'll feel no different where it counts than when you were 30.

TheFormerChild · 08/10/2020 19:16

I won't be defined by my age. If my age is relevant, I'll mention it - otherwise, bum off.

SRS29 · 08/10/2020 19:18

55 this year, DD2 in GCSE year, work full time, hate sweets, DD1 @ Uni, DH also work full time, both WFH - loving life...mortgage free...yippee

VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 19:23

Fuck that! I’m 67 and I’m absolutely not sucking on my Werther's Originals longing for the social centre to re-open so I can resume whist drives and coach trips to outlet stores with a nice cafe attached!

I’m pissed off that my solo trip to India can’t happen next year, am planning to start my MA course next academic year and as soon as I can am off to Wales to do the Penrythn zip wire.

IndieTara · 08/10/2020 19:26

I'm 53, single parent to an 11 yr old, work full time , am On thé PTA , volunteer for a Carers Forum, walk the dog etc etc. Old is 80's or my Grandad who is over 100.

Callipygion · 08/10/2020 19:28

I’m 60 and working part time. Daughter at uni and son working. Not keen on Werthers, as boiled sweets make my mouth sore, but I’d grab your hand off for some Cadbury chocolate!

Kolsch · 08/10/2020 19:30

Shimmies into the thread to say mid fifties with purple hair and doc marts here.
Kids grown up and married off, like bonking the bones off my husband and mortgage free.
Work full time and hate garden centres.
I laugh at the youngsters.
Ooh, Werther's, don't mind if I do, thanks 😁
Shimmies back out of thread.

pontiouspilates · 08/10/2020 19:31

I'm 52, work in the NHS, in paediatric therapy. I run, do weights and Pilates. Pre covid, I was an avid gig goer. my kids are all either at uni or secondary school. I feel in great shape physically and mentally. I haven't seen any ageism on here, and I'm sure that it can work both ways.

DynamoKev · 08/10/2020 19:32

Over 50 12 YO DD.
Still working. Combination of Covid and IR35 destroyed my one person business. Zero help from government but managed to get a job.
Still paying mortgage until I am 65 (hopefully)
Sick of all the "selfish boomers" comments here and elsewhere.

EasternDailyStress · 08/10/2020 19:38

I'm 52, and was 34 when I joined Mumsnet, while expecting my DS. I still work, run, play video games and drink lots of wine. So basically no different to 20 Grin

FeltCarrot · 08/10/2020 19:43

I’m over 50 with two dc at uni and I work as a TA with reception children.
Love my job but am knackered when I get home.

10pennychews · 08/10/2020 19:47

Over 50 two 15 year old, at uni doing my first degrees, part time front line worker.

PickAChew · 08/10/2020 19:50

I'll be over 50 on Sunday. Currently just 50.

I might lock myself away if fat under 50s lock themselves away, first.

isseywith4vampirecats · 08/10/2020 19:52

64 here and still working two jobs dont have time for whist drives lol time off work too busy going out on our big american cruiser motorbike

PickAChew · 08/10/2020 19:54

Do you think your dd's teachers who are over 50 should all stay at home, too?
Cadent · 08/10/2020 19:58

@Pacif1cDogwood

Cednet, interesting perception.

This would suggest otherwise

That chart is not very clear is it?

Just look at the responses on the thread!

  1. Work full time and main breadwinner. Youngest Dc is 18, oldest is 30. I am a FT worker at senior management level, mum to a teen and two adults, and carer for elderly parents.

I can still stand on my head....although I tend not to as it makes me spill my wine
