To ask over 50s to check in to show we are not a separate breed of Mumsnetters

COVID has really brought out the ageism on Mumsnet! Over 50s are not an homogeneous group sucking on our Werther's Originals longing for the social centre to re-open so we can resume whist drives and coach trips to outlet stores with a nice cafe attached!

I'm mum to DC who's taking their GCSEs next year and I will have to continue working to support them through uni and because I enjoy working AND I have a mortgage!

So stop trying to lock us down - the economy needs us as taxpayers and consumers!

Alive.
Still a mum.

NinjaPig · 08/10/2020 18:26

I'm 50 in December, work full time with 2 boys Yrs 7 & 9, married and play sport. I'm not the boring stick in the mud that is being portrayed either!!!

lidoshuffle · 08/10/2020 18:28

63, still working in a useful public sector job. Did a post grad qualification at 60.

Just about to do some plumbing DIY this evening.

52 with a 16 year old and an 18 year old. I am not ready for beige slacks and Hotter shoes just yet

caringcarer · 08/10/2020 18:33

I am late 50's 3 adult kids, 2 still living at home and full time Foster Mum to a sporty 14 year old with SN's. I always seem to be busy at home but early retired teacher.

IceniWarrior · 08/10/2020 18:39

Not over the 50, husband is. Maybe the over 50s should give the 'youth' want they want. Stay at home and drink tea. See what happens when society crumbles.

Bloodybridget · 08/10/2020 18:40

66, living with cancer, and I still want my life, thanks - including doing anything other people are allowed to do.

RuthW · 08/10/2020 18:44

I'm 52 and work full time for the NHS.

BlueThistles · 08/10/2020 18:44

Over 50 ... just 🌺

Im a front line worker.. Im Scottish and live/work globally, even now despite Covid. Two teenage children and a DH who works overseas too.

Mumsnet keeps me grounded, and Im glad to see so many over 50's here. ☺️

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/10/2020 18:46

Nice thread, OP! Over-50 is hardly old and it's utterly bizarre to think that it is.

56, no children by choice, academic who'll be working until 67 to get full social security benefits. Currently teaching in-person, with masks and social distancing, of course, still wearing jeans, hoodies and DMs and still with a truly puerile sense of humor.

Cadent · 08/10/2020 18:47

Is this a joke? It's obvious most posters on Mumsnet ARE over 50!

Pacif1cDogwood · 08/10/2020 18:51

Cednet, interesting perception.

This would suggest otherwise

Keeva2017 · 08/10/2020 18:51

I know this thread isn’t for me but I’m 34 and I genuinely bloody love an outlet store with a nice cafe attached!

Il go now but also just wanted to post my agreement!

Timeandtune · 08/10/2020 18:52

I am 61. Work full time in 3rd sector job leading a team of 9. Very fit ( ParkRun), volunteer ( Brownies). DH quite poorly ATM ( not COVID related), 2 grown up DSs. A full life for which I am hugely thankful.

TheSeedsOfADream · 08/10/2020 18:52

55 in a fortnight.
Full time teacher. Deputy of a residential summer school in well, the summer, which is 24/7.
One DD in fifth year.

If you report the "but they should all be dead/watching Bargain Hunt/I'm not sacrificing my kids for some random 80 year old" (that last a real quote from a real MNer) (subsequently deleted, then they namechanged) HQ do delete.

It verges on eugenics at times.

AhNowTed · 08/10/2020 18:59
  1. Work in IT sales. Senior management for 25 years. Main breadwinner. Two kids in their 20s. Still 28 in my head. Love a party/good night out. Glass half full. Drink too much.
pigsDOfly · 08/10/2020 19:00

Ageism has always been rife on MN.

If you think it's bad for the 50+, it's nothing compared to the bitterness and hatred reserved for us so called 'baby boomers'.

I'm in my early 70s. Apparently my generation had everything handed to them on a plate and we're all now living in the lap of luxury having stolen any future hope of every single child born ever since.

I get the distinct impression that, according to MN, the world would be vastly improved if we could all just crawl away quietly and die instead of hanging around, making a noise and spending our children's inheritance.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/10/2020 19:00

I pushing 55, just started a new career and pre-covid could be found down the front at indie concerts...oh and I don't like Wherthers.

YesThisIsMe · 08/10/2020 19:01

That research is from 7 years ago though PacificD0gwood. I think the demographic is ageing with the site so while 20-somethings are joining every day the over 50s aren’t leaving it when their DC leave home. I’d guess that the over 50s are still a relatively small proportion of users but steadily growing.

Grendalsmum · 08/10/2020 19:04

58, working full time at a museum, two kids at uni ( youngest just started this week ) likes angry music, bodyboarding and making stained glass panels. Last birthday l went swimming with sharks.
Tempted to quote Rage Against The Machine to anyone who thinks l'm a relic.

Joeblack066 · 08/10/2020 19:04

57, work full time have worked my way up to being a Director in my career, whilst raising 4 kids as a single parent. Still their go to if they need help. DD23 still at home and I am her FT support with many health issues, physical and mental. Run, 5ks, 20ks, half marathons. My job means I’m helping a lot of people. I will not be shut away unless I have Covid!

MissConductUS · 08/10/2020 19:05

I'm early 60's, working full time with 2 kids in uni.

I'm guessing that part of what kicked off this thread was the suggestion that older people might not get the vaccine in the UK, at least not for a very long time. That struck me as very odd. The vaccine distribution guidelines the CDC has released in the US are fairly complex and depend on things like cold chain distribution logistics but the early stage prioritization will be for healthcare personnel, essential workers, persons with high risk medical conditions and older adults (≥65 years)

Grendalsmum · 08/10/2020 19:05

I do like a nice cafe, though - so maybe l'm fooling myself ...

Mitsouko67 · 08/10/2020 19:05

In my fifties working ft with teen and tween DC. Breadwinner, mortgage etc.

Looking forward to travelling and exploring my cultural interests in my sixties all going well.
