To be surprised and disappointed at John Lewis for only having polyester nighties for girls?

I know that this is not the most pressing issue of our times! But I looked for a nightie for DD in John Lewis today and was surprised they were all 100%. I wouldn’t sleep in polyester myself - I don’t know why on earth JL thinks kids should.

For some reason I just thought JL would have lovely stuff and that it would be a nice treat.

My dd was given a JL nightie, and I thought "aww, what a cute design! That's a treat!".

My word did it turn out horribly for her. Sweaty, clingy, bobbly...

We've found m&s ones in the past that are MUCH nicer.

CitizenFame · 07/10/2020 22:40

I was surprised when JL didn’t stock something once.

So I went somewhere else.

Rainallnight · 07/10/2020 22:42

Yes, that’s exactly it @Noterday, I can just imagine the sweaty mess Sad She’s only 4 but she runs hot in normal circumstances.

The White Co do lovely cotton ones.

Handsnotwands · 07/10/2020 22:46

It’s been that way for a while. I agree, surprising and disappointing

TheWoodsareDarkandDeep · 07/10/2020 22:47

I think this is a legal thing about them not being flammable. I used to get cheap cotton dresses in a bigger size to use.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 07/10/2020 22:48

That's surprising, OP, I agree cotton are best.

The softest 100% cotton nightie tops I've found (full sleeved)are in the GAP. Like wearing a cloud.

Do it again now.

Cath Kidston had great cotton nighties last time i was there.

Rainallnight · 07/10/2020 22:53

That’s interesting @TheWoodsareDarkandDeep. I’d have thought polyester was way more flammable! But my science might be off Grin

@Howlooseisyourgoose, Gap is a good tip, thank you!

@HelloDulling, White Company really would be a treat! Thanks, I’ll take a look.

Yep, this has frustrated me for years too esp when DD sees a design she likes and I know it’s just going to be shit. Boden, white company, cath kidston. No cheap options IME.

Rainallnight · 07/10/2020 22:57

The Boden ones are gorgeous and SO expensive.

Rainallnight · 07/10/2020 22:58

And yep @ProfessorInkling, I was really lucky I didn’t have DD with me today or I’d have had a hard time not walking away with a load of sweaty crap. Covid has its advantages!

It's impossible to find nighties on the highstreet that aren't polyester. Something that's always baffled me too, over the years I've tried John Lewis, TU, George, Marks and Spencer, Primark, Matalan, Debenhams, even Boden are not 100% cotton and are over £20 each. Using dresses is pretty genius, I don't know why I haven't thought of that. H&M ones are only about £2.99

lobsteroll · 07/10/2020 23:13

Google Mini Lunn, they have the most gorgeous cotton nightie for kids. I just keep buying the same ones in next size up when they grow out of them. They are a bit more expensive but they last for yonks.

I am passing them down to youngest now too and I've never been able to do that with cheap high street ones.

theconstantinoplegardener · 07/10/2020 23:37

Children's nightwear is subject to flammability regulations. They must be either:

  1. made of a fabric that melts instead of burning, eg polyester
  2. made in a tight-fitting style that is unlikely to brush against candles etc
  3. treated with flame retardant, if cut in a loose-fitting or float style Since flame retardants can be absorbed through the skin and are turning out to be quite toxic, nighties are often made from polyester (as they tend to be loose-fitting and liable to brush against candles etc). If you are happy with pyjamas instead of nighties, Hatley does cotton pyjamas, in short-sleeved or long-sleeved designs, available from John Lewis. They are not treated with flame-retardants.
Rainallnight · 07/10/2020 23:43

@lobsteroll, they are just beautiful!

@theconstantinoplegardener That is a very helpful expiation. I want to look into this info about fire retardant treatments being harmful a bit more because that wouldn’t be a good thing. Sadly, it’s definitely a nightie I’m after as DD is pining for one, having only ever had pyjamas

I’m quite disgusted at the decline of John Lewis. What set them apart from all other department store was the quality of their goods, the price match and excellent customer service. Unfortunately they have gone the way of a all other businesses and outsourced the customer service, reduce the range and quality of stock but retained their high prices,. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water, they have thrown away everything that made them a cut above other shops and now wonder why they are losing money and are unable to pay staff bonuses. Whoever is responsible for this decline in a once great company should hang their head shame.

theconstantinoplegardener · 07/10/2020 23:51

I think Woods suggestion of a pretty cotton dress is a good one BUT only if you don't have lighted candles or open fires at home, and not to be used near camp fires either. Maybe get a flame-resistant nightlife for when she's staying at other people's houses/on holiday, as you might not know whether they have naked flames in their house.

Flatpackback · 07/10/2020 23:51

Fire retardant nighties. It was a big thing back in the 60/70s when many houses had paraffin heaters or coal fires, before central heating became the norm. It was often reported on the news of children dying or badly burned by nightwear catching fire, that’s when the regulations were introduced.

Not sure what style you're after but these are 100% and are super pretty.

The White Co do lovely cotton ones.
Another vote for the White company. Only downside is the largest size is 11-12 years.

In this case EU regulation?
Flatpackback · 08/10/2020 00:26

Elsewyre can you explain please? Genuine question, not aggressive or sarcastic.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/10/2020 00:34

Dear God, Et tu Johnny Lou Lou? The dirty fucking bastards.
(PS Apple predictive text really doesn’t want you to say either Fucking or Bastard does it?)
