To be surprised and disappointed at John Lewis for only having polyester nighties for girls?

I know that this is not the most pressing issue of our times! But I looked for a nightie for DD in John Lewis today and was surprised they were all 100%. I wouldn’t sleep in polyester myself - I don’t know why on earth JL thinks kids should.

For some reason I just thought JL would have lovely stuff and that it would be a nice treat.

Stupid question perhaps but why is it important nightwear is designed with fire risk in mind and day clothes aren’t? I don’t feel like a child being close to open flame is more likely at night then during the day/evening

Chouetted · 08/10/2020 03:17

Perhaps they're more likely to be unsupervised at night?

ToastyCrumpet · 08/10/2020 03:25

Cologne and Cotton do lovely ones www.cologneandcotton.com/childrens-bedroom/childrens-nightwear

@Edinburghfalls I believe the thinking is that parents are less likely to be able to respond quickly to a child in danger at night when they are sleeping. As PP says, this legislation dates from the middle of the 20th century, when many houses had a fireplace or paraffin heater in the bedrooms and there were cases of children being badly burnt by their nightwear catching fire if they were up during the night, and their parents being oblivious because they were sleeping.

Yuk! Primark do cotton. Love their nightwear (and it lasts for years).

I had the problem at the end of the summer and found one on amazon quite reasonably - it had a unicorn on and was striped so my daughter was happy Grin I was at a bad time of year though as it was the sales and the white company didn’t have her size - happy to see these other suggestions thank you Smile

@Elsewyre

In this case EU regulation?

Which regulation is that? I live in the EU and we in our family sleep in cotton here.

@HelloDulling

The White Co do lovely cotton ones.
I agree

In this case EU regulation?

Yeah, bastard EU stopping children from going up in flames Hmm

I have worked on a children's burns unit. The rule about children's nighties is a good one and, if you'd ever seen a child after its clothes caught fire, you'd think so too.

Flatpackback · 08/10/2020 10:16

EU regs? I thought that comment was about the decline of John Lewis? I haven't checked but I I thought the nightwear regs were prior to EU membership

mirandatempestuous · 08/10/2020 10:25

I agree on white company - lovely
Nighties and PJs. JL is weird - mostly great but occasionally completely fail.

Rainallnight · 08/10/2020 13:09

Hm, lots to think about here in relation to fire! Not where I thought this thread would go Grin We have no naked flames in our house - we’ve stopped having an open fire since the DC came, and we only light candles occasionally after they’re asleep. But something to think about.
