To think this is a bit much?

Daughter who is 21, has been approached to do some babysitting work. She is unqualified in childcare but wants to do it. She has asked for £22 for 2 hours. Does anyone else think this is a little high if she wants further work from this family?
Even my niece who is a lot older and highly qualified only charges £10 an hour.

I don’t think £11 an hour is an unreasonable amount for babysitting. It’s a job which comes with enormous responsibility - literally the welfare of other people’s children.

If the family don’t want to pay that much she can consider lowering her prices, but it’s not an unreasonable ask imo.

PinkAndFabulous · 07/10/2020 15:43

To add, it's for 2 children. Forgotten to mention that in my OP.

It was a fiver when I baby sat 20odd years ago 😄If the people are willing to pay her then good for her

itchyfinger · 07/10/2020 15:46

I think £8-10 is reasonable.

BrowncoatWaffles · 07/10/2020 15:47

I think £11 an hour is about the going rate here. The only annoying thing for me would be making sure I had change.

Mrsjayy · 07/10/2020 15:50

Yes 11 is quite random she might need to round it down to a tenner.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 07/10/2020 16:03

What does the person (potentially) paying her think? That's the only important thing, surely.

GoldfishParade · 07/10/2020 16:07

The extra quid looks and sounds cheeky plus cbf messing around with coins. Call it a tenner.

Mrsjayy · 07/10/2020 16:26

Bet babysitting is all balance transfer these days, my Dds never use cash even if they pick something up it's a case of transferring money. So maybe they won't be scrabbling for the £

PinkAndFabulous · 07/10/2020 17:09

I would expect to pay no more than £16 for 2 hours for 2 kids.
DD said they seemed fine with paying £22 so can only think the parents need the help urgently. It's on a Sunday morning which makes me think it could be an essential trip.

Either she’s greedy or I charge too little!

I’m 40, have very high childcare qualifications and work in the role now, with paediatric first aid and a degree and do cleaning or ironing once children are in bed. I charge £10 per hour!!!

Can I hire you?! Flowers
phoenixrosehere · 07/10/2020 17:29

Two children for £11 was the going rate when I was doing childcare almost a decade ago, however I lived in a city where of course cost of living is higher and demand was high. Depending on the area, demand and what a family is willing to pay, it doesn’t sound cheeky at all.

Not exactly for you to say what is cheeky or not if you’re not the one who is paying for it.

UnicornAndSparkles · 07/10/2020 17:29

For 2 kids and 2h I'd say that was reasonable

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 07/10/2020 17:33

The person we use charges £10 per hour - she’s fully qualified as well and is the assistant manager at the nursery. I’m not sure if I’d get some unqualified to babysit but if I did I’d not pay them that much

PinkAndFabulous · 07/10/2020 17:49

DD is unqualified and not much experience unless you count helping out occasionally with her younger cousins.
I don't think she will get follow up work from this as the parents will surely find someone who can do it for about £14-15 next time.
Just surprised that people are willing to pay that these days.

But that would be less than minimum wage

slashlover · 07/10/2020 17:55

I would expect to pay no more than £16 for 2 hours for 2 kids.

Minimum wage for a 21 year old is £8.20/hour.

addler · 07/10/2020 18:00

But if they're willing to pay that then surely it's not too much for them? Every household has a different budget. I get £15 an hour from one family who I used to nanny for, and £12 an hour from another who I only babysit for and who recently became a single mother so I wouldn't want to charge that much.

PinkAndFabulous · 07/10/2020 22:20

I suppose so. I guess they just won't ask her again if they feel it is too much. She will have to entertain them as it is in the day so she will be working for that money.

Just curious I guess as to what others would pay.

You’re too cheap! Babysitting with cleaning & ironing!
arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2020 22:31

She can charge what she wants and they can choose whether they use her or not.

Round my way it's £5 per hour for an unqualified teen, and £10 per hour for someone a bit more qualified.

Smallsteps88 · 07/10/2020 22:33

Let your daughter value her own time. It’s between her and the person paying her. If she’s asking too much they won’t hire her again and she’ll revise her prices. If not she’ll get the work and the price she thinks she is worth. She certainly shouldn’t revise her prices because others value their time at a lower price.

Smallsteps88 · 07/10/2020 22:35

And TBH you sound like your pooping on her parade. Stop that. Women don’t need anyone lining up to knock them back into place, especially not their mothers!

Florencemattell · 07/10/2020 22:36

Minimum wage is £8.25 . Why is £11 unreasonable. By babysitting I assume you mean in the evening when children in bed.
Or do you mean childcare in the day?
I would want a babysitter to have a DBS, paediatric first aid at the very least . But as self employed £11 is reasonable .
