To think this is a bit much?

Daughter who is 21, has been approached to do some babysitting work. She is unqualified in childcare but wants to do it. She has asked for £22 for 2 hours. Does anyone else think this is a little high if she wants further work from this family?
Even my niece who is a lot older and highly qualified only charges £10 an hour.

I would pay that for someone qualified. Would expect a bit less for unqualified but take on board the comments about MW.

I think that's fine. My teen would charge £15 ph for 2 kids even if they will be sleeping. She's always in demand. She also gets a paid taxi home if she will be there after 10pm. She is trustworthy and reliable so her families are happy to pay.

Jeez I pay my dog walker more than that! She’s decided her worth so good for her. I think The poster calling her greedy is bloody rude. If you’re mug enough to work for less then crack on.

The hourly rate is slightly misleading though because there’s a certain amount you’d need to pay to make it worth someone’s while going for just a 2 hour job. When I used to babysit (a fair while ago) I used to charge £25 for the first three hours - for two kids - and an additional £6 per hour thereafter. This went up to £10 an hour after midnight. If they wanted less than 3 hours then I’d still charge £25 because by the time I’d arranged it all and driven there and back I wouldn’t really want to bother for less than £25. Most parents were fine with this though as they’d be going out for the evening and wouldn’t be out for less than 3 hours anyway.

@Moonshinemisses £15 an hour?! Christ. Prices really have gone up.

lyralalala · 07/10/2020 23:00

That's not an excessive amount for a Sunday morning imo.

Most babysitting rates involve an element of the kids being in bed so it's often money for just being there just in case (and DD1 tended to get slung some extra cash from parents if the kids had played up or the likes)

Good for her, not undervaluing herself!
Looking after DC is undervalued, people are happy to pay that for an unqualified cleaner so why not to look after their DC ?

Moonshinemisses · 07/10/2020 23:22

bananallamas sure has, she used to charge me £20 ph to look after her younger brother. An entrepreneur in the making

bananallamas · 07/10/2020 23:25

Haha that is amazing! Good for her.

Given it's a Sunday morning I think that's quite cheap. It's not like she's watching tv while the kids are in bed
