Excruciating toothache. Please tell me there’s something I can do about it....

Lost a filling during lockdown. My dentist have only just started to take bookings and I’ve got an appointment tomorrow. But in the meantime I’m in excruciating agony which has come up pretty much since yesterday.

I’ve been taking paracetamol but can’t take ibuprophen as it’s contra-indicated with warferin which I’m on.

Have. Rinsed out with salt water, which actually made it worse, applied some garlic crushed into a paste, and applied some vanilla extract on a cotton bud, as per advice discovered on some health site.

I feel a bit like a witch doctor. Grin but am still in agony. Is there anything else I’m missing?

Clove oil

AndWhatNext · 06/10/2020 21:35

Cloves or clove oil

Toothache is horrendous

foodtoorder · 06/10/2020 21:37

Take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen, if there is no swelling and just a hole then buy a temporary filling kit from boots. Then phone 111 for the emergency dental service.

modgepodge · 06/10/2020 21:37

Can you take codeine?

foodtoorder · 06/10/2020 21:38

Apologies I should really read properly before posting.
Is there a late night chemist near you to get some co-codamol from?

chocolatespiders · 06/10/2020 21:39

Orajel extra or ultra.
Paramol pain killers are the only thing that helped me and also a warm compress on check.

AngeloMysterioso · 06/10/2020 21:42

This was me last week, I actually had a thread about it! I actually ended up going to A&E and being prescribed oramorph. Tried orajel, my problem was I kept rinsing it off swishing salt water but it might work for you. Paramol is great stuff too if you can get to a pharmacy.

ConiferGate · 06/10/2020 21:44

I know this isn’t possible for everyone but you haven’t said that you’d discounted it, private dentists are doing full range of treatments so if it’s something you can afford then they will be able to see you within a day or two.

ConiferGate · 06/10/2020 21:45

Oops sorry just reread and saw you have appt for tomorrow. Good luck, it’s just awful isn’t it

CreamCabbages · 06/10/2020 21:47

Seek advice from a late night pharmacy such as Boots.

Solphadine or co-codomol could be warranted in your situation.

A topical pain killer for tooth ache and teething is Anbusol. Works a little better than clove oil.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if you can use both at once!

Merryoldgoat · 06/10/2020 21:48

Get a flannel, soak it in water as hot as you can take it and hold against the face near the tooth. The steam (or something) helps.

Do it for a while. Keep re-soaking it and ringing it out and pressing it against your cheek.

Teacup34 · 06/10/2020 21:52

I would also reccomend clove oil just take care not to get it on your skin it burns 😣. I've had awful toothache before and found holding a hot pad to your face ( I used a wheat bag that went in the microwave) helped also sleep propped up it can sometimes hurt more to lie flat.

Mangofandangoo · 06/10/2020 21:54

Anbesol

Last time I had toothache I used vodka - don't swallow it (unless you want to get drunk as well) but put some in your mouth and hold it agains the tooth as long as possible before spitting it out. Its surprsingly numbing (I think gin or whisky would do the same thing)

Otherwise paracetamol, cool (or hot) pack on cheek, strong mouth wash (cordysol if you have it) paracetomol..

Poor you hope they can fix it tomororw

AlternativePerspective · 06/10/2020 22:04

Thanks all.

I swear to God labour wasn’t this bad 😱

Do you have a 24hour pharmacy? They sell temporary filling stuff. It's really easy and works well.

Torvean32 · 06/10/2020 22:11

Sounds daft. Get a babybel, get the red wax off. Roll a tiny bit of wax til it covers the space. When air stops hitting the gap it will help.

CupiddStunt · 06/10/2020 22:12

see if you can get your hands on some 30/500 cocodomol or solpadol, they will also send you to sleep for the night, worst. pain. ever!

If you do get co-codamol, it is paracetamol and codeine, so you must not take it within 4 hours of your paracetamol and your total daily dose of paracetamol still applies.
CoronaBollox · 06/10/2020 22:18

Everyone says this, but I really would rather give birth than have toothache. Awful. Doesnt work for everyone but when i had awful toothache i would soak a Flannel in warm water and bite down on it, helps the pain while biting down and for a while after, until the cold air hits it again. Anbesol worked for me too.

Brighterthansunflowers · 06/10/2020 22:31

Orajel is fantastic, I used it when I had a gum infection at the start of lockdown, it numbed it enough for me to get to sleep, which was when the pain was worst

(thankfully my wonderful nhs dentist was still able to give me a prescription for antibiotics from a telephone consultation which sorted it)

Caplin · 06/10/2020 22:55

I feel your pain, been there twice and both times it was after having a filling replaced and the nerve died. Most horrific pain, I was begging them to rip out the tooth on the spot. But a root canal sorted it both times!

Good luck!

ClareBlue · 06/10/2020 23:12

There are some studies that found that people who have gone crazy and done really bad things were suffering from serious tooth pain. Aparantly it can make you loose any rational thought. So take whatever you can get for the pain and good luck in the morning. The relief when I got mine sorted was fantastic. Nothing like being in pain to really appreciate not being in pain.Flowers

Any Codeine Paracetamol combination of 15mg and over needs a prescription.

Strongest over the counter codeine/paracetamol medication is Solpadeine Max which is 13.8/500
