To be annoyed that DSs nursery is having a Halloween party...

mm22bys · 11/10/2007 15:54

that's being held on a Saturday (so not even on Halloween day / night) that he has to go fancy dress to and they're having a pumpkin carving competition?

I must be really lazy, but I can't be bothered taking him. It's being put on by the PTA.

He's only new at the nursery from this past Sept, and I am thinking a get together for all the new parents and students and the terachers, around the time he started, would have been much more appropriate..

AIBU? Am I real kill-joy?

The way I look at it, we're now knocking at winter's door. In the dark months, any excuse for a party should be welcomed with open arms.

Rachmumoftwo · 11/10/2007 21:55

I think you could try a little harder. You may even have fun. Your child will, which is what it should all be about really. If you are shy, I bet others are too, so go, meet new people, watch your child enjoy a party.

LittleBella · 11/10/2007 21:59

I don't really understand what you're complaining about tbh. That someone's organised a party? And that they didn't do it earlier on in term when no-one knew each other and none of you had any real impressions of the nursery, so nothing to talk about over drinks?

Really, it is a very strange complaint.

Moomin · 11/10/2007 22:00

TEscos are doing a huge range of costumes from £1 to about £12 that can be used again next year as well.

lomondgal · 11/10/2007 22:02

YABU in my opinion, if you want to go then go, if you don't then don't, no big deal!!

maximummummy · 11/10/2007 22:04

cor - what a misery guts - of course YABU AND YES YOU ARE A kill JOY - your son will feel really left out if he doesn't get to go too

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 11/10/2007 22:05

You are being unreasonable, of course you are. At DD's school they are having a 'spooky disco' but as they are going to be just back from half term on the 31st they are doing it on the 19th.

And it isnt free, even for adults accompanying the children. I'll be going, as well as having the kids from her class round mine the friday after halloween for a party so they can enjoy halloween without going round trick or treating.(theyre 6/7 so too young to go by themselves and it is bloody chilly!)

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 11/10/2007 22:07

Oh and yes, your poor son will be gutted, I didnt realise that at DD's school when they have discos the tickets 'sell out' annoying really as the parents go along for a get together and drinks and then some children miss out. But anyway, DD missed out, as they had sold out, she was really upset!

Actually I was too, and cried, for being such a bad mummy, now I now twas the hormones.

SaintJude · 11/10/2007 22:34

YABU.

YABU YABU YABU.

incogneato · 11/10/2007 22:36

I can't even work out why you are pissed off, tbh.

shimmy · 11/10/2007 22:39

are you for real?

helenhismadwife · 14/10/2007 11:33

it sounds like the sort of thing I would hate but my dd's would love so I would go for them

2hot2care · 14/10/2007 11:48

i agree with you mm22bys.

i really dont like halloween. i think its an excuse for some kids to cause trouble.

also, frightening for young children. (and old poeple, who dread it!}

plus its just another american thing we've been sucked into. total rubbish.

inthegutter · 14/10/2007 11:52

Does your son want to go?? If so, I think you should make the effort. If he doesn't- what's the problem? these things aren't compulsory. Some people just don't want to do 'schooly' things out of school time, so I suggest if you're one of them..... just don't go!!

Nightynight · 14/10/2007 12:55

2hot, when we were little, we had apple bobbing, and carved turnips and pumpkins with candles in. Scottish contemporaries remember going round to people's houses and singing songs.
nothing american, it is traditional in the UK.

LIZS · 14/10/2007 13:16

YABU Noone's forcing you to but if you can go, why pass up such an opportunity to meet the staff and parents less formally ? And to ahve your child entertained. As to costume either improvise (a simple mask or face paint and hat /cloak perhaps) or get an inexpensive outfit from a large supermarket or H and M do Halloween themed tops etc.

morningglory · 14/10/2007 13:50

YABU. If it bothers you, don't go.

Sounds like just a bit of fun for your DS, though.

2hot2care · 14/10/2007 14:02

nightynight;
yes thats right. apple bobbing and pumpkins are traditional.
i meant the "trick or treating" that has become more popular in the last 10 years or so. dont ever remember that when i was a child.

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 14/10/2007 14:33

We always had trick or treating in Ireland but we didn't call it that. Can't remember what we did call it!And we didn't get sweets, we got nuts and fruit. We used to not on doors and sing "Nuts for the pookies!" and there were no tricks if neighbours didn't comply! It was lovely and much healthier than nowadays.
God, I sound about 90, don't I.

cornsilk · 14/10/2007 14:53

We always did trick or treating and everything else that went with Halloween as kids also. Loved it and my ds's do too.

milkshake · 14/10/2007 15:09

yes you are a kill joy...

bah humbug, have a merry halloween every one

MrsSeanSlater · 14/10/2007 21:01

2hot, I went trick or treating when I was a child (as did most of the other children I knew) and I'm 36, so it's definitely not a last decade thing at all. I remember coming home with a huge bag of goodies and it was very exciting. I'm planning on letting DSs (5 and 3) go this year, accompanied of course.

Elasticwoman · 14/10/2007 21:04

Oh God is it that time of year already?

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2007 21:08

Yes, you are a kill-joy.

God, who'd be on the PTA?

Well me and it's parents like you that piss me right off.

MrsSeanSlater · 14/10/2007 21:09

elasticwoman, have you not noticed all the black and orange stuff in the shops?
