YABU - in the morning, before work
YANBU - in the evening, after work

I am trying to work out when I would have the most success at committing to a plan!

Before I got a job that involved stupid early starts, morning, because if I exercise in the evening, I'm too wired to sleep.

And it felt nice to start the day feeling the endorphins.

BananaLlamaConCalma · 06/10/2020 20:11

I sometimes take pre workout to get into it.

I must have my head on a pillow and eyes closed by 9.45 but usually 9.30.

My alarm is set for 4.45. I don't even look in a mirror before I leave. Just tracksuit and put my hair into a less messy ponytail.

SurreyHillsGirl · 06/10/2020 20:40

Currently WFH and we were lucky enough to have built a gym in our summer house just before lockdown, so I have been popping down there every day at 10am ish. I get a few Zooms out of the way first and then I can break my fast (I fast 16/8) at 11am. Works well for me as the mornings are when I'm at my most energetic. Any later, I start to lose interest!

AuldReekieCreakymemory · 06/10/2020 21:05

Always always after work due to the following:

  • if work has been stressful there's nothing better to clear your mind than jumping around / throwing weights around / doing a work out so sweaty you can only focus on getting through it - wipes the brain clean!
  • after the post-work out endorphin rush I'm naturally sleepy & so go out like a light when I go to bed
  • can't get out of bed early in the morning & need to have eaten before working out so not enough time
  • red tomato face is not conducive to getting make up on and looking professional!
Delamalama · 06/10/2020 21:12

Mornings. I'm normally.out the door for 6.30 quick (slow) 4 or 5 mile run. Then it's done and dusted and isn't hanging over me all day.

Up quick coffee and off I go. Believe me it isn't always easy to drag myself out when it's cold and dark, but I always feel so much better for it afterwards.

LadyCatStark · 06/10/2020 21:14

Both! I run in the morning before work (but like hell would I get up at 5am to do it!) and Pilates in the evening. I find if I exercise in the morning, according to my Apple Watch, I burn more calories throughout the day.

fluffi · 06/10/2020 21:16

Both, but if I have to chose definitely mornings, makes sure it gets done and even if you have a rubbish day at work you've still achieved something

Lilyofthevalleys · 06/10/2020 21:22

A cheeky lunch time run (we have showers at work).

If not at work (Covid), either weekday evenings or I have a Sunday morning running crew.

GetRid · 06/10/2020 21:23

Interesting thread. I'm WFH, and have 30mins in the morning between dropping kids off and needing to start work, so I'm trying to exercise then.

I'm enjoying it and feel it gets the day off to a good start.

Not looking forward to doing it on dark mornings though.

Nicketynac · 06/10/2020 21:23

Before. I have made a run part of my commute by parking further away and running. I can shower and change at work but means I have to run with a backpack. I walk back to car after work (my running route is longer than walking route)
It's a lovely way to start the day - fresh air and no excuses.

Crocky · 06/10/2020 21:27

I’m generally a morning person but can’t face exercise early so after work suits me.

dameofdilemma · 06/10/2020 21:29

Before Covid it was one evening after work, then two mornings (on weekend and non working day).
Evenings were tricky as having not seen dd all day I did want to get home. Mornings on work/school days impossible (I’m not a 5am person).

Now I’m wfh I go for a run most mornings (Dp is also wfh and drops dd at school). I try to also fit in 20-30 mins of Pilates during the day.
I always thought I wasn’t a morning exerciser but actually prefer it (just not pre 7am).

Basically I’ve got 3 hours a day extra now I don’t commute!

andIdidntliketheending · 06/10/2020 21:30

I’m thinking doing it first thing may also help with keeping on the straight and narrow with food that day!

WFH, I work out sometime between 7:30 - 8:30.

If I had to be in the office, it would be after. I get a thumping headache if I try to exercise too early.

Thighdentitycrisis · 06/10/2020 21:31

No

LindaEllen · 06/10/2020 21:32

Morning (though I never have to start early), because I just won't get round to it after as I'll be hungry, tired and grumpy.

user1471446186 · 06/10/2020 21:34

Both, two days a week I swim at 6:45 before work and two days a week I go to Bootcamp in the park at 7 in the evening.

notacooldad · 06/10/2020 21:35

Depends on the time of my shift. Sometimes I start at 8 sometimes 11 sometimes 2. Someday I work from home.

To be honest only you know what commitments you have in the morning and evening and how your body feels at different times of day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/10/2020 21:36

Depends on my routine at the time. During lockdown I would run mid mornings. In the summer I get up early and run before it's too hot. Currently I work 8-1 so I get changed and run straight after work. I do evening classes twice a week and bootcamp Saturday 8am and a long run on a Sunday. It's just a habit I've got into now and it's just become normal to exercise every day.

ChazP · 06/10/2020 21:38

I do a boot camp 3 times p/w at 6:30am. I have to do it first thing so I can’t talk myself out of it! I roll out of bed at 6am, get into exercise gear and head out before I’ve even properly woken up.

I can then feel smug for the rest of the day, knowing I’ve done it.

How do you find working out just before breaking your fast? I fast as well but always find I have to break it and then workout but I would love to get to a point where I can do it before!
ReallySpicyCurry · 06/10/2020 21:58

I'm so utterly crap at mornings that it has to be evening. I go for a run and I look forward to it all day. It's the only time I really get to listen to my own music, and getting out for half an hour alone is bliss

Coffeesnob11 · 06/10/2020 21:59

Always before work and hopefully before my toddler is awake and i have to drop him off to childcare. I intermittent fast and find i workout better fasted and no matter what goes wrong in the day i have got my workout done.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 06/10/2020 22:05

0620 - 0650am on my exercise bike before work, while watching Netflix.

secretnurse · 06/10/2020 22:06

I like morning because it sets you up for the day, but I very rarely manage to get up! I especially love exercising on the way home from work, stopping at the gym for a quick HIIT class, it helps me draw a line between work and home and relieve work stress so I don't take it home.
