To ask if anyone has had a cough and not got a positive test

Dm has come down with what we are hoping is a cough and cold virus. We are awaiting tests results for her. Has anyone had a cough and it not been the virus?

OP posts:
GreyishDays · 06/10/2020 19:24

@chipsandgin

Currently less than 2.5% of tests are positive & most people I know who’ve had them have predominantly had them because of a new persistent cough (because of schools not allowing staff or pupils to attend with one).
That’s much lower than I’ve seen @chipsandgin

Do you have a source for that?

OP still the odds are very much with you that it will be negative.

Yes DS had one last week when he developed a cough and lost his taste/smell, came back negative and now we both have a raging cold/flu.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/10/2020 19:33

Yep, DS inevitably picked up a cough within a week of term starting. I got him promptly tested, inevitably it was negative.

MaddieElla · 06/10/2020 19:37

Yep, DD, 17. Head cold and a wicked cough. She never picks up a cough so I did think it could be covid.

The test was negative.

EducatingArti · 06/10/2020 19:37

I developed a new cough last week with no other symptoms. Did test at weekend and I was negative!

underneaththeash · 06/10/2020 19:47

DS sent home from school with a high temp and bad cough (and sore throat) sent home from school (only had the sore throat when he went in that morning. Covid - negative, we had to pay though as there were no tests.
He gave it to DS2 and DD who gave it to their schools.

At least we have that one out of the way.

Dartsplayer · 06/10/2020 19:49

Yes my DS had a nasty cough for a few days at the end of last week. Got his test results earlier - negative

DominaShantotto · 06/10/2020 19:52

Yep. DD1 first... both kids off school and off to the testing centre we went even though we knew she'd irritated her throat from trying to sniff snot back up her nose with a bad cold (school insisted)... negative.

Then DD2 picked up the same cold bug - again school insisted... both kids off school - back to the testing centre, along with DH who always has a cough but had a cold one on top of his normal one... negative.

I'm the only one in the family who hasn't had the cough doing the rounds yet (I have one fucking awesome immune system - years of teaching)

PleasantVille · 06/10/2020 19:52

100s of 1000s if not millions of people have a cough that's not covid but that has literally nothing to do with whether your mum has it.

You know that right?

Doyouknowwhat · 06/10/2020 19:58

I work in a nursery, we have sent loads of children home with coughs, and not a single one has tested positive.

FlumpetCrumpet · 06/10/2020 19:59

All 3 of us in our house had a cough and tested negative. Out of interest I had a quick google and 23.8m tests have been done to date and only 502k have been positive which would suggest that the overwhelming majority of people who have had covid symptoms tested negative

Dee1975 · 06/10/2020 20:20

Yes. DD last week. There will be a lot of negative results due to ‘cough n colds’ going round.
Why do you think that a standard cough and cold this year would be any different?!! Obvs you need the test so you can prove it’s not ‘Covid’. But just because Covid exsits, that doesn’t mean coughs and colds have disappeared!!

Brighterthansunflowers · 06/10/2020 20:21

The vast majority of tests are negative. The usual coughs and colds are still going round, probably even more than usual after having six months of people not really mixing much

LittleBlueBee · 06/10/2020 20:37

My son had a cough and cold last week, and he tested negative

Dobbyismyfavourite · 06/10/2020 22:38

DD had a temperature and cough Covid-19 test was negative.

Greenhairbrush · 06/10/2020 22:41

Yes. Had a cold which inevitably always gives me a cough. Had a test and as I expected, negative.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 06/10/2020 22:45

Quite a lot of people I would have thought, it's cough/cold season. I had a negative test for a bad cough with mild cold symptoms. It was a nasty chest infection that needed 2 weeks of antibiotics, steroids & using my inhaler far more than usual before finally clearing though. The dc all had a cough along with a cold at the same time & tested negative too (the joys of back to school bugs).

PowerToTheMeeple · 06/10/2020 22:47

Me. I had my flu jab at the end of last week and then came down with a cough, sore throat, muscle aches, headache etc. No temperature and no loss of smell/taste, though I’ve been congested. Covid test over the weekend negative. Telephone consultation today with GP who says it’s now likely a chest infection due to phlegm colour etc. Looks like I’ve passed it on to my DH and DCs as there is coughing here this evening 🙄

user1496146479 · 06/10/2020 22:48

Of course! The usual coughs etc are still here!

StealthPolarBear · 06/10/2020 22:50

Dd two weeks ago
And hopefully
Dd again tomorrow morning
This bloody cough

UselessASD · 06/10/2020 22:51

Yes a couple of weeks ago.

MinnieJackson · 07/10/2020 06:39

Yeah my mum was negative, she had a chest infection

MinnieMountain · 07/10/2020 06:46

DS has been coughing for weeks after his negative test. It's reminded me how much his coughs tend to linger.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 07/10/2020 10:58

@StealthPolarBear

Dd two weeks ago And hopefully Dd again tomorrow morning This bloody cough
Solidarity Stealth, mine are all coughy children (along with one asthmatic) hence my amazement that we've only had to isolate & test once thus far this term. It's going to get wear thin by March, isn't it?!
Seeline · 07/10/2020 11:16

Yep.

Just a cough and a bit breathless.
No other symptoms, no cold, nothing.

Tested negative.
