To ask how much supply teachers get paid

I'm considering doing supply. Just wondering if there are any supply teachers who would mind sharing how much they get paid a day. I'm not sure if what I've been offered seems a bit on the side thanks

What have you been offered?

Through an agency or a School directly?

Username781 · 05/10/2020 20:26

Agency. £100

Sorry that should say £110

It’s a few years since I did supply but agency pay was £100 a day as a teacher or £70 as a cover supervisor, most schools only wanted/needed a cover supervisor, although I did once call my agency at break and tell them I was going to walk if they didn’t pay me as a teacher, it was drama and NOTHING had been set, was an absolute joke, blagged my way through the day though! Directly employed by schools I was paid to scale.

If I didn’t need a guaranteed income I’d go back to supply in a heartbeat, life was easy! Even working in a PRU!

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 05/10/2020 20:29

I was going to say about £100.

It doesnt work out to scale unless you take on a longer term contract.

spanieleyes · 05/10/2020 20:29

It depends on what you are offering. Secondary maths or physics, you can pretty much name your price, primary seems to vary around the 100-120 a day mark.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 05/10/2020 20:30

Ah true. So many schools want "cover supervisors" now so they will try and get upu to take an even more reduced pay.

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/10/2020 20:31

That sounds reasonable as agencies take a % cut

Hannahfftl · 05/10/2020 20:31

I get 80 as a teacher and 63 as ta, I think that's very much on the low side though but no idea what to do about it!

Hopeisnotastrategy · 05/10/2020 20:35

Be careful of the current scam where many supply teachers are being paid through an agency and are expected to pay employers' NI and a hefty service fee ( I know of £16 a week) on top for the privilege of being paid. It's an absolute disgrace.

LolaSmiles · 05/10/2020 20:35

The people I know with 10-15 years in the profession are still only being offered M3 for long term supply.

Some are being offered day to day supply for £90 a day and even cover supervisor rates of £65 a day.

happylittlechick · 05/10/2020 20:35

£120 full day teacher. £60 for TA. The problem isn't the day rate of pay. It's guaranteeing the work. I've had one day so far this year. It's shit. Usually picks up after half term.

Thingsthatgo · 05/10/2020 20:38

Wowser. I used to do supply 20 years ago for £120 a day through an agency. Shock

TrickyD · 05/10/2020 20:41

Those rates are shocking when compared to anyone, such as plumbers and electricians, whom you employ to do work in your house.

sanityisamyth · 05/10/2020 20:42

Wales here. A day is currently £127.72 on M1 (framework) but is set to go up to £138 ish. Before tax etc.

spanieleyes · 05/10/2020 20:42

We pay the agency £180 a day. They keep a third. We have had so many staff off since we went back in September it's costing a fortune.

Username781 · 05/10/2020 20:42

Thanks everyone. Seems about right then. I thought perhaps around the 120-150 mark. Apart from the pay how do you find it? Anyone enjoy it?

MsStillwell · 05/10/2020 20:44

I used to go direct to the school, not via an agency, and got £140 a day. I don't think it'd be that easy nowadays as so many things are privatised through the academies.

Agencies seemed to pay £100-120.

31133004Taff · 05/10/2020 20:49

£125.00 a day which I worked out at about £16,000 a year if you calculate that you’re not working school holidays and the Sept to Oct term when no work is available. If you’re not needing to work to make ends meet, it means it makes teaching manageable.

LetsGoToTheHills · 05/10/2020 20:50

I'm being offered £140 a day but again schools are asking for cover supervisors instead which is paid at £80. But no work yet this term. I think there would be if I agreed to the lower rate.

Happytobeme123 · 05/10/2020 20:52

I think I got 85 / 90 a day. It was long term though.

happylittlechick · 05/10/2020 20:54

It's all about the schools. I have a few on my no go list and a few where I only do KS1. I am on a few schools preferred list so they ask for me. You need good behaviour management that's the main thing.

MrsPworkingmummy · 05/10/2020 20:58

I did supply when in between jobs around 6 years ago via Vision Education. I'd previously been on the leadership pay scale so had a figure in mind that I was prepared to accept. I was offered a long term contract (from March to July as I had a job set up from the September) and was paid £140 a day for the first 12 weeks. Following this, I was paid around £205 a day.

Sunstar16 · 05/10/2020 21:06

In NI on M6 I get £170 a day.
