I'm around 2-3 stone over weight, if I wear jeans and a top I feel really uncomfortable like I can't move right, I much prefer track suit bottoms and a t shirt, my clothes aren't to small they are the right size I just feel so uncomfortable! Could this be the extra weight I have or just me ?

I am not overweight but now can't face wearing jeans. I have been wearing floaty dresses all summer and have felt light and at ease, and now all of these heavy restrictive winter clothes have made me rethink my winter wardrobe for this year.

That said, I think carrying weight might be uncomfortable sitting down, bending etc, so if you feel you would be more comfortable then losing weight is always an option.

Mmsnet101 · 05/10/2020 13:05

I've recently lost 1.5 stones to try and get back to a healthy weight, but my jeans size has remained the same, just much more comfy now. I've never had to breathe in to put them on etc, but I was constantly pulling them up back up over my belly when getting up etc.

When I put on weight it goes fairly evenly around my body so I also find that Tshirts and some tops just feel too short to go around my boobs and belly, as I also have a long body. They fit but just don't feel comfy and can't move as freely in them.

Tigersneeze · 05/10/2020 13:07

i'm thin and can't wear jeans - they way they are pressing against my belly is too uncomfortable

Justforphoto · 05/10/2020 13:10

I am overweight but I live in Jeans, you just need to find the right fit and cut for you.

haba · 05/10/2020 13:10

Jeans are just so uncomfortable! Doesn't matter what size you are, or they are it seems!
Lovely soft fabrics are your friend.

Coconuttts · 05/10/2020 13:17

Sometimes, people just carry on wearing the same size jeans they always have, but bodies change. There is no shame in going up a size - who will ever see the label?? Be comfortable!

M0mmzee · 05/10/2020 13:21

Jeans put lots of inches on to even skinny people. They are uncomfortable unless they are jeggings, which give a slimmer appearance. I just wish they would gently taper the legs rather than have them grip your legs.
If you are comfortable in your choice of clothes and with your weight then that is fine.

Weirdfan · 05/10/2020 13:31

I'm 2 stone overweight and wear jeans a lot of the time. Some are comfy, some not, depends on the style/cut I think but I definitely find the uncomfy ones dig into my belly in a way no jeans ever did before I put on the weight. I find it generally uncomfortable being this big tbh, lots of things are harder and more awkward including clothes.

Fatted · 05/10/2020 13:35

I'm four stone over weight. The only time jeans are uncomfortable is if I wear an uncomfortable style in the wrong size. High waist skinny jeans in a size 18 with stretchy denim are really comfortable. Mum jeans in rigid denim are not.

CloudyGladys · 05/10/2020 13:41

Clothes sizes increase in size in the body, but the proportions remain constant so don't take into account your waist:hip ratio (or leg girth).

If you carry weight predominantly around either your waist or hips (apple or pear shaped) then one measurement may be correct but the other not.

Try different brands or different cuts.

Staffy1 · 05/10/2020 13:58

I feel the same and am also 2 - 3 stone overweight. When I got to a certain size the jeans just don't feel right for my shape anymore, although they are the right size for me. I need to drop two sizes as they used to feel fine at that size. I think I was more in proportion at a smaller size so they fit better.

Lovemusic33 · 05/10/2020 13:59

I’m not overweight but still find jeans really uncomfortable, I will wear them out but as soon as I get home I take them off and put yoga pants of leggings on. I feel uncomfortable with anything that has a button on them or thick fabric. I don’t think it’s necessarily a weight thing, I don’t think clothes are designed to fit real people, we are all different shapes and sizes so although something may fit your waist it won’t necessarily fit your bum, hips or legs so finding a good fit is tricky.

EstuaryBird · 05/10/2020 14:01

@BashfulClam. Absolutely agree about walking trousers...I love them. Comfortable, stretchy, flattering and lots of useful zipped pockets. Dry out quickly if they get wet too.

I’ve lost 3 stone and have another 3 to lose...trust me, walking trousers are wonderful 😊

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/10/2020 14:07

Another thing to bear in mind is that depending on your leg shape, skinny jeans can be ridiculously restrictive even with a high stretch content. I have larger thighs and knees and thin calves - skinny jeans grip my knees and pull themselves slowly down with each step, so I have to wear a belt to keep them up. I imagine that people with skinny legs don't feel like this! Looser styles are a) more fashionable and b) much comfier!

I also took comfort from the & Other Stories website when rigid denim started coming back in. It had a message next to its jeans advising that you should size up in the rigid denim jeans. Everyone's so used to wearing stretch after years of skinnies that they forget that old-fashioned proper denim doesn't give like that! So if you're buying 100% cotton with no stretch, consider going up a size - it's not you putting on weight, it's just the way the jeans are made!

Graciebobcat · 05/10/2020 14:08

I'm two stone overweight but my jeans are comfortable as they are the right size and I'm pretty much a standard size 14. Definitely half a stone more and I start to feel less comfortable though and when I was in the obese range, lots of clothes were uncomfortable, even when they were the right size.

Graciebobcat · 05/10/2020 14:11

Yes, I've often struggled with fitting my legs into trousers which had no stretch, even when I was a size 8. If you have a slim waist it doesn't mean you have unmuscular legs. I would just buy things that fit looser or were better cut for my shape. Or had stretch.

loveyouradvice · 05/10/2020 14:14

I'm like you... and having lost the weight before yes without the additional couple of stone of fat, jeans felt comfortable again.

I tend to wear loose dresses and leggings when I'm chubby - and then the fitted stuff - including jeans - when I'm the weight I enjoy being.... which is also a healthy BMI

So I agree with you - being plump and being uncomfortable wearing jeans do tend to go together..... Good luck with the weight loss! Mine is coming off again.....

PattyPan · 05/10/2020 14:18

I am also around 2 stone overweight and I can move in my clothes fine. I’m wearing skinny jeans right now and they are comfortable. I think your clothes just don’t fit quite right Confused

LadySeaThing · 05/10/2020 14:19

I find jeans more uncomfortable since having 2 c-sections and then gaining weight in the stomach area with menopause. I am slightly overweight and trying to lose it, but it's the stomach in particular that makes jeans feel annoying. Wearing smoothing control shorts really helps because it's less like I'm being squeezed in the fat bit!

ChronicallyCurious · 05/10/2020 14:23

I am currently within healthy weight range but have also been over and under weight and I’ve never found jeans comfortable. I find they hurt after a while (wearing the correct size) and I hate sitting down in them.

Might just be me though, as soon as I get home I have to have my pyjamas on no matter what time it is 😂 If I’m back home for a few hours and then out again later I’ll put my pyjamas on and then get rechanged. I love being comfortable.

oakleaffy · 05/10/2020 14:23

If your clothes are ''Too tight'' then of course you are too fat for them.
I have put on a stone over ideal weight and you bet my old jeans feel tight around the middle.

Horribly so. And a grotesque muffin top too.

In loose trousers with drawstring waistband..or elastic, them I feel positively svelte, as no nasty digging in when I bend over.

I Need to lose that Stone, rather than go up a size in clothes..Or where will it end

AfterSchoolWorry · 05/10/2020 14:27

Jeans are so uncomfortable, but bras are the worst, I only wear them while in public. Literally can't breathe in them!

Zoflorabore · 05/10/2020 14:30

Im a size 20-22 and have put weight on during lockdown due to illness and being a lot less active than I was. I hate Jeans and on the rare occasions I wear them I cannot wait to get home and get them off.

I love palazzo pants and leggings but the danger with these is that they stretch so you can easily put weight on without realising.
Jeggings are a good compromise.

HildegardVonBingen · 05/10/2020 14:31

I am a couple of stone overweight - size 14 top size 16 bottom at 5'9". I think some of it depends on where you carry your weight. my bottom half has never been smaller than a size 14, but I didn't used to carry any weigh around my middle. Since perimenopause I've not only put on a little weight, but it's all around my tummy, and waistbands are no longer my friend.

MangoFeverDream · 05/10/2020 14:32

Not overweight but have relatively chunky thighs that make jeans a nightmare. I wear dresses with thigh shapewear and literally find that more comfortable than jeans.

You could also wear dresses by just dusting legs with talcum powder and wearing with regular underwear for further comfort.

But jeans are simply not comfy, I don’t know who actually thinks they are .... I suspect everyone just got very used to the look and feel.
