Is there genuinely ANYONE who could afford to get a couple of weeks shopping into the house, who hasn't?

And if so, WHY?

So people who are on the preppers board with threads from this month are panic buying @Elsewyre?

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:08

"I'll get a delivery " was the refrain of all the lovely folk on here until they struggled to get a delivery slot.

Why the fuck should I break my required self isolation to get your bag of frozen peas because it was beneath your dignity and contrary to your principles to get an extra one yourself and sling it in the freezer.

Yesthesearemymonkeys · 05/10/2020 16:10

@Aridane

Yes - but it doesn’t mean I have to go full on bunker prepper mode Wink
There is a middle ground you know?
Elsewyre · 05/10/2020 16:11

Out of curiosity is everyone keeping a stockpile of petrol back from when we were all advised to during the fuel strikes?

Elsewyre · 05/10/2020 16:11

@toilet

So people who are on the preppers board with threads from this month are panic buying *@Elsewyre*?
"This month" yep 100%

Even if you didn't have a problem doing your shopping, getting what you needed - surely 2020 has shown you that we can't take things for granted (like shops being open, schools being open, not having to queue, rationing in shops?). Surely anyone who has experienced 2020 understands that the old rules of life can stop applying very quickly?

But you're talking in the context of shopping. Yes 2020 taught me lots of things but no-one I knew had an issue obtaining food.

So many posts on this thread contradict each other, on the one hand you should get 2 wks of food reserves in case you need to self isolate as to do otherwise is selfish & endangering others. But what after the 2 wks is up? How do you replenish without endangering others because last time I checked the virus is still here?

But hasn't it taught you that just about anything is possible?

In 2019 we'd have said the chance of schools being closed for months was so small as to be irrelevant. We would have scorned the idea that you could be fined for leaving your home in some circumstances.

Why, in late 2020, is suggesting that something could happen in the not too distant future that would make getting food more difficult (even if not impossible), so unthinkable?

It isn't just about covid, there's also Brexit to throw into the mix,and the challenges that will place on the supply chain.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:12

I never let my car's petrol tank get below half full. It runs out. I walk. General prepper 101.
Never stockpile petrol unless you live a long way from anyone and can store it away from your house.

Yesthesearemymonkeys · 05/10/2020 16:13

Good grief, who advised that?

Keeping a stockpile of petrol is very dangerous.

Ylvamoon · 05/10/2020 16:14

I bulk buy certain things... (as they come in bulk and are cheaper).
Other stuff just as always, no need to empty supermarket shelves.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:14

Yesthesearemymonkeys , a previous poster asked if people were "stockpiling petrol "

LolaSmiles · 05/10/2020 16:15

MaggieAndHopey
Millions of people panic buying in March caused the shortage.

People panic buying and shelf clearing multiples of loads of items isn't the same as people having a couple of extra products they actually use.

What we saw in March wasn't people getting a couple of extra items. What we saw were people deciding that in light of a big event they needed to buy several packs of toilet rolls, as much pasta as the shops would allow them to etc.

Had the shops actually limited people to a maximum of 2/3 items earlier then the shelves wouldn't have been empty. Once the shops started limiting panic buying the stock levels were better.

Yesthesearemymonkeys · 05/10/2020 16:15

Sorry didn’t refresh the page - that was In response to @Elsewyre’s post.

MahaliaJ · 05/10/2020 16:15

I shop weekly, so have between 6 and 1 days food in the house. Usually have frozen peas whatever though. Oh, and a few Cook ready meals in the freezer. I'd manage.

toilet · 05/10/2020 16:16

Some of those people have taken the opportunity to do so and, when those delivery systems fall down, those people will be the ones reducing the demand on a limited supply of goods - to the benefit of the people who did not have the means to buy anything in advance.

But people on this thread are talking about having 2 wks worth of food in. Which does make sense for isolation purposes. What doesn't make sense is that you can't be talking about people with 2 wks of food in in your post because there was threads on here with people saying they couldn't get deliveries or pasta, flour for weeks on end. So for those that had 2 wks indoors & used that up in say March there were back needing food 2 wks later when the shortages were affecting some & doing exactly what you say is not fine if you’re in the shops during the shortages taking a bag of pasta or flour

It’s like saying ‘it looks like rain but I won’t bother to take an umbrella because if we end up with a force ten storm that umbrella won’t do me any good.’

I don't even own an umbrella! 😂

Yesthesearemymonkeys · 05/10/2020 16:17

@bellinisurge - yes, sorry, I was replying to that poster - didn’t realise I hadn’t refreshed so ended up under your post!

bibbitybobbitycats · 05/10/2020 16:17

A prepper buys when food is freely available, not when panic buyers are out in force.

Exactly.

toilet · 05/10/2020 16:19

Why, in late 2020, is suggesting that something could happen in the not too distant future that would make getting food more difficult (even if not impossible), so unthinkable?

what happens when my 2 wk reserves run out? will all the issues have been sorted?

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:19

Preppers don't panic buy. We don't need to.

MahaliaJ · 05/10/2020 16:19

So do you not shop when people are panic buying? Are you using up your stocks starting from then?

ChavvySexPond · 05/10/2020 16:20

@Elsewyre

Just to point out unless you started this 2019 or ealier you are not preparing you are panic buying.

If you've always done it like many do and many have mentioned they're not putting any extra pressure on they are just continuing as normal.

But if you're starting your two weeks now you are not prepping you are panic buying

Then I'm sure a government minister will appeal for calm on the evening news.

Otherwise it's just some people doing a big shop isn't it?

The more of us who are are already ready, the less of an impact those few big shops will have.

MahaliaJ · 05/10/2020 16:21

I think the 2 week reserves are to cover having to suddenly self isolate in case you don't have enough and have to ask someone to get you some shopping, which is selfish and threatening people's lives, apparently.

AyDeeAitchDee · 05/10/2020 16:21

Yes could afford.

No I don't have a stock pile.

Will shop for a few days worth tomorrow as I'll have the chance then.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:21

I have kept topped up, bit by bit. Have done for a couple of years. As and when I can afford it. So I have a buffer. You would never know I was doing this.

MahaliaJ · 05/10/2020 16:22

You would never know I was doing this

I wish.

bellinisurge · 05/10/2020 16:23

Lovely @MahaliaJ . I meant in real life. If you saw me in the shops.
