Is there genuinely ANYONE who could afford to get a couple of weeks shopping into the house, who hasn't?

And if so, WHY?

I can easily afford to stockpile as much food as I wish, I could buy extra fridges/freezers and I have the room for them.

However I wouldn't dream of doing that. If there is a shortage of certain foods I will just eat something different. Even if I ended up just eating the same food 3 times a day, I would just joke about it and get on with it.

I could understand if you had a child who was a majorly fussy eater due to allergies or SEN that you might stockpile (even in usual circumstances).

I saw some right selfish cunts stockpiling last time, shame on them for screwing over those who couldn't get the food they needed.

ChavvySexPond · 05/10/2020 09:30

@Elsewyre

People stocking up/panic buying is the only reason supermarkets every had bare shelves as ther was no interruption to production
Our toilet roll usage quadrupled because we were all at home all the time. We burned through the buffer and had to borrow bog roll.

Without school lunches, tea at the child minder, work dinners and lunches we needed a lot more shopping.

The whole point is you can't go out and get it though. All very well sayiny you will eat what there is..Great. alot of us will. But its no good if its in a shop you aren't allowed in for 14 days is it...

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:36

What is it with the toilet roll though?

A relative who was shielding received 2 good boxes through the government scheme. She thought it was excellent.

Is having 1-2 weeks shopping actively prepping thought? I thought those people you're talking about months worth.

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:39

I mean if you head to the prep board, some threads are talking about starting it/building it up now. Isn't that the opposite of prepping because Covid is upon us, Brexit is looming & food shortages are already getting discussed in the press?

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:42

and if I read those boards & think oh people are starting to prep so I should too & I add 4 extras to this wks shop what does it make me?

HollywoodHandshake · 05/10/2020 09:45

@Janevaljane

I suspect preppers don't work, otherwise they'd just pick stuff up on the way home.
yes, because the thing you REALLY want to do when you are rushing home after a 2 hour tube and train journey is going to the supermarket and arrive home even later Hmm

And most workers are told to stay home anyway!

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/10/2020 09:45

Some of them have been at it years.

Stock piles appear to be fine when you cant he arsed to prepare yourself and need to borrow stuff.

Not fine when all you suddenly care about the elderly and vulnerable who bailed you out at their own expense not being able to get replacement food.

Meanwhile you are supoosed to not use offers like 3 packs of loo roll for a fiver so you don't make it look like you are stocking up and cause panic buying issues.

Meanwhile supermarket's have floor to ceiling displays of toilet roll ....

And no 14 days isn't alot but if you aren't down to your last oat its greedy ajd unnecessary

so you are happy to cause a shortage of that other food for those who need it... helfpul

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:48

How can I help it that I've not been an adult for very long?

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/10/2020 09:50

Then you sre a selfish vow for even thinking about it! Ps have you got some beans I've run out

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:52

No but Im young & fit so happy to go to the shop for you

trevthecat · 05/10/2020 09:54

We have always had a store cupboard full of tins, cordial, washing powder, pasta etc. And a freezer with portioned meat. We buy a couple of extras each week for the cupboard. If we are skint we use stocks and we just replenish when things are better. We have done this for years. Our stocks are just about where they were in march when people started going mad! We could comfortably last with what we have for maybe 3 weeks only needing bread and milk. Family of 5. I think everyone that can, should do this. It's been so helpful over the years.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/10/2020 09:55

Aw thanks... cos its OK to fill the trolly when it's for everyone else

toilet · 05/10/2020 09:57

You only want a tin of beans right? I don't know what size they come in at your supermarkets but here they wouldn't even fill a basket.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/10/2020 09:58

A 4 pack if thats allowed,,? Dont use the offers though cos then u might start a stampede

toilet · 05/10/2020 10:00

I don't see why it would

toilet · 05/10/2020 10:02

But seriously what is it with the toilet roll? I've read that some supermarkets are now restricting it to 3x per person but they haven't had to restrict food in the same way.

BalanceGreen · 05/10/2020 10:03

I generally make sure I buy a replacement spare when something is getting low - so we are never using the only/last of something.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/10/2020 10:04

I have no idea...

However round here They cant seem to give it away theres loads. Maybe they need to create the illusion of more problems to flog all the stuff left over?

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 05/10/2020 10:05

We always have a good few weeks' worth or more in the house because we live very remotely (not much in the way of supermarket delivery, nearest small shop a good few miles away, nearest big shop 15+ miles, no user, no taxi company).

Have only been here 4 years and already been completely snowed in/ flooded in 6 times. So "stockpiling" is normal for us- lots of dry / tinned food, calor gas bottle for heating if needed, candles and paraffin lamps etc.

I absolutely love it! 🥰

toilet · 05/10/2020 10:06

Good point perhaps there is an over supply

Bwlch · 05/10/2020 10:18

@YouBringLightInToADarkPlace You should get a generator. Even a small one will keep the lights on, the central heating running and the broadband connected.

Khajit · 05/10/2020 10:23

I've got a few extra non perishables aside which should last us 2 weeks if necessary, just put in a couple of extra tins at my weekly shop. It's hard to get deliveries where we are though. We could probably afford to get a bit more but wouldn't have anywhere to store it.

There are no gaps on the supermarket shelves where we are though and I haven't seen anyone panic buying.

JustDavesWife · 05/10/2020 10:30

I don't understand where people put it all and what they buy that doesn't go out of date! Obviously tins etc are fine but I don't have a chest freezer and only have 6 drawers so I can't freeze loads, other stuff like fruit and veg are obviously only going to last a few days 🤷‍♀️ Do all of you who are stocking up have big freezers?
